Mori Dreamers 2 is mostly an excuse for Madoka lewds. It's still okay, but it's overall just a nice little extra. The main villain is a very big disappointment and in general it felt like it could've been a lot more.

Tokihate is better than Mori Dreamers. Should read that before Mori Dreamers 2 for sure. Otherwise you will get spoiled a little.

Artemis Blue has been pretty good. I've just started Chapter 6. I've heard that it apparently loses steam in the later chapters, but no matter how shitty the game gets I think it will still end up being a very memorable experience for me.

I think I will try checking out more games by Inoue Keiji. I've heard Ashita no Yukinojou and it's sequel are both pretty good games and Sousei Kitan Aerial is kind of shitty. I think I'll still end up playing everything by him because I really want to read more of this kind of eroge.

A lot of the common route are little short stories. Basically there's a setting that some kinda ghosts can possess people. Normal people can't see them and they are simply a part of the world. If it happens, the person in question will die soon. That's the way the world works, and completely normal. But there are some red versions of that, those possess people who are generally having very destructive or twisted thoughts, or want to kill someone or similar stuff. In that case the person gets eaten more or less from within and if he or she kills someone, the corpse and anything related to it (i.e. blood) will vanish a short time after the death.
The main cast more or less fights that, which works from within "dreams". It's not quite that straight forward but it should give an idea. This is also where the horror happens.

There's an overall idea that is followed, but that's a spoiler for the prologue I guess. At some point that's going in full force. The horror is over at that point, more or less at least. This is also the biggest mystery part, although the separate chapters have some "what's going on?" as well. In the end the whole work however is much more psychological than anything else. And it works, if you ask me. Unless you want romance. That part... is frankly very unsatisfactory. Not sure if I was the only one who found the routes very lackluster, aside of the main girl's one which finished the main story.

>spoiler for the prologue
Ugh, regarding that, I want to edit the vndb synopsis so that it doesn't spoil it, but I don't really know the best way to go about that. Just deleting the spoiler-y sections seems like it wouldn't work so well since it's a direct quote from some guy's blog, so it should probably be rewritten entirely. It looks like I can actually edit it right now, but wiki people can sometimes get a bit pissy about the editing process.

I was thankfully was able to read the VN without getting spoiled I honestly didn't think it would happen, although the effect was soon dampened but I'm sure many other people have been.

>Not sure if I was the only one who found the routes very lackluster, aside of the main girl's one which finished the main story
I only did Mifuyu and then Kureha Kureha's route was so dumb, like seriously, he comes back and does that and then his motivations were retarded but yeah they weren't too great. The main story was a blast for the most part though.

What the FUCK were the Amakano 2 devs thinking with the opening movie? I usually skip them since they tend to just show you stuff you'll see in the game anyway, but Amakano 2 doesn't even let you skip the OP movie no matter how much you click and press esc. Not only that, but in this unskippable movie, it goes through EACH OF THE HEROINE'S CONFESSION SCENES and shows them confessing to the protagonist! What the fuck?! Way to weaken the impact of the scenes. When I get to them I'm just gonna be like, yeah I already fucking saw this. What were they THINKING?

Put Fortissimo on hold a couple months ago, but every time I go to finish it, I get too bored to continue and go to read something else. Especially with having to slog through stupid Sakura dere scenes. And I fucking can't stand seeing the word 覚悟 in it anymore. The third (or was it 4th?) OP spoiled me on Sakura vs Suzushiro, which I expect will actually happen, so not looking forward to that either. I think I'm over 80% done with Sakura's route though, so I'll get it over with eventually. Satomura vs Momiji gave me a good laugh though.

Replaying the first Utawarerumono game after having played the second and third game is quite interesting. There are a lot of small details that I missed or didn't deem important back then, and they aren't even really mentioned in the anime (I re-watched the anime before playing 2 and 3, but didn't replay the first game, I last played it ages ago).

For example a single line mentions that there is a "bypass" in Iceman's mask that they haven't understood yet, it's probably the giant transformation feature. Also they mention that they adapted the masks to decoys, and Hien and Haenkua were supposedly wearing masks during fights. There is one mention that over time it puts burden on them and drives them crazy, kind of foreshadowing how the masks erode the soul in the sequels.
In the PSP version that I played just now, I think this wasn't in the PC version back when I played it, after losing her "child" Urtori takes over a home for orphaned children, which also comes back in the third game during the visit to Tuskur.
And of course all the talk about the onvitaikayan, tatari, etc make a lot more sense now.

I bought Mink's Big Set Sweet from DMM

http://dlsoft.dmm.co.jp/detail/minkm_0023pack/?dmmref=sk51w2f7

I played Sister Scheme (for which I bought the set) can't get Sister Scheme 2 to work but I'll figure that out on my own I think. Played Tsukue Otome about a girl who ties herself up to her desk hoping her teacher finds her and rapes her because she has a crush on him and a bondage fetish apparently and finally started Maid in Shigoto today which is also a bit more rapey than I expected from a set with 'sweet' in the title. YOU are the maids. One of the Akihabara giving out tissues kind of maids, not working for a master who rapes you kind of maids.

So, anything else in the set any good? Anything someone is desperate for me to share? I can't get Sister Scheme 2 to work but it should be easy enough to find anyway.

Kichikuou is a non-canon game that's basically a prototype for Rance X. A lot of it got retconned (characters being rewritten for example) and it's somewhat spoilerly for X, so play it after X if at all. It's a fun game so it's worth playing, though.

Ok, I give. My sister scheme 2 file is just a file with no way to open it. I tried downloading it from DMM in 1 part and I tried downloading it from DMM in 7 parts and combine them. I'm not a computer genius. Winrar won't open it. I tried opening it up in SoftDenchi, DMMs typical copy protection program and the file literally vanished from the folder forcing me to download it again (which was weird and the old copy is probably floating somewhere taking up space). I feel like "figuring it out" wasn't really something many people did, since the game doesn't present itself as something TO be figured out or a mystery or anything. I guess there are hints, sort of? It's basic and since the game does give you choices to keep indulging in your daughter or not, the idea that they're separate people isn't one that should come easily.

Furthermore they handle the reveal surprisingly well, since it's like this paranoid day or two where the protagonist is totally worried he has a stalker or some other crazy shit is happening

Also, assuming by "overhead" you mean "use of system resources", VMs have way more overhead than things run in Wine. My fans go mental just from running a VM alone, and my computer shuts itself down due to overheating if I try to play newer VNs in one. With Wine, assuming the VN will actually work in the first place, my fans won't make any noticeable increase in noise output from running it.

It used to be really problematic but now I don't have issues 70%+ of the time. Kirikiri-based engines work the best in my experience. I use wine-staging with CSMT enabled which usually fixes some GDI issues. You can also use winetricks to install Microsoft's DirectX if you have graphic issues, ffmpeg+quartz if you have issues with video, etc. There are often workarounds, but there are still are games that simply refuse to start at all. It depends on the engine/company. Another issue is the overhead; I get considerable CPU usage in games that use near 0% in Windows.

VM is a better option although Virtualbox isn't very good. VMware is the only good choice (although proprietary). QEMU+KVM is also very good (and open source) but it seems it doesn't handle video well yet (which we need of course) unless you do passthrough.

How should I play eroge if my computer is in a room frequented by my parents? Should I just move my computer? It's been in that same spot ever since I've had a computer. I've been fine with games that have few sex scenes (or predictably placed ones), since I can just mirror the screen to my notebook each time, but it's a bit laggy, so I wouldn't want to play whole games that way.

While it definitely makes good sense to start with a text hooker, I think that you want to ditch it as soon as you're above JLPT N3 level or so.

My experience with them is that they're way too tempting. Even if you commit to not using them, your brain still knows that the option to "read' the sentence by lazily mousing over things is less than five seconds away. I've found that I can process things faster and more independently since I've limited myself to jisho and goo.

Hmmm. The writing is a bit worse cause it's not Hiei but overall I enjoyed it. Shina writes better characters and interactions between them. He somehow managed to combine both the mystery of the story and the everyday life of mercanaries. The gameplay is different from Sky but when you get used to it, it seems fresh and nice. Plus, Kou and Rain has a major role in this so you get to see them a lot. More mature(not really, just edgy) Kou, yay!

I dropped Baldr Heart in the middle of the second route. I just couldn't stand that high school srs business atmosphere.
Btw, does Baldr Heart get better in later routes? I might give that game another chance too.

If by "most things", you mean "most sentences", then sure. Most sentences pull from the same relatively small set of ideas.

If by "most things", you mean "most plot expositions, most descriptive monologues, and most jokes, without having to stop to look things up", then that's bullshit. That's where the writer starts pulling from the other 34,000+ words that your average educated native has in his vocabulary. It's not even an uncommon experience to run across things that didn't make it into the J-to-E dictionary.

Yes, but only in the latter half of Nagi's route. Well, Yuuri's route also wasn't that bad, I think. I honestly don't know if it was worth it in the end. On the other hand, gameplay was great so... I would say that you should give it another try if you really like the gameplay. Otherwise — probably not.

My advice is to try and stay focused on one game, and only to pick up a new game if you also drop the game you're playing with no intention of coming back. If you keep up the pace of constantly swapping games that you enjoy, then you'll end up unsatisfied with a bunch of half-finished games. It's best to just restrain yourself a bit and stick with someone for however long it takes to finish.

>> No.18423440

>>18421829

There are plenty of works that are kinda fun, but not fun enough to play them to completion without anything else in between. I don't see any harm in stopping after a given route, or major arc or whatever and come back later. If you don't come back within a year or whatever, you can still delete it.
There's also the case that if you really enjoy a route to the point you feel bad for choosing a different one, waiting a year or two isn't a bad idea. This is pretty much only a moege thing though, and shouldn't happen very often.

That said, this depends on the person as well. Some love to play everything of one big series back to back, some don't. And I don't. Stopping after a given big arc isn't that different. It's much more "dangerous" to start several things at once. This tends to end badly. But if you make a clear cut and put something deliberately on hold at a very specific place, that should be fine.

Finished 天使のいない12月.
Even though it's really short and has a lot of routes none of them are pointless. Each route deals with a different theme and a side of the protagonists issues. I really liked how the relationship between the protagonist and the main heroine develops in a different way in each route.

It was a lot darker than I expected but I really recommend it if you want to read a good drama.

It reminded me of Crescendo (even though they aren't really that similar). There are probably a lot of similar games from that period that only few people know about. If anyone knows anything similar (good drama, routes where the intent isn't only to fuck the girl) please recommend it to me.

Out of curiosity, how did those of you here who are fluent or advanced learn Japanese?

I know the DJT guide lists quite a few different approaches, but I'm curious as to which ones successful learners actually followed. Did you use Anki? Did you go any more in-depth into grammar study than just reading through Tae Kim's guide? Did you do RTK or anything similar? Yeah, I was quite disappointed with many of the other rather one-dimensional baddies but Lucius was a 10/10 character. I also loved how Caim, despite his many objections was willing to work together with Lucius for so long, even when they were doing exactly the same things together as the previous villain who they usurped. The last chapter in general was so damn good.

English translations make it sound more well written and literary than it otherwise would be. That comes with the language.

Really? I find it one of the worst chapter in the game. Caim's personality did a complete 180 while Lucius ends up as your standard sociopathic villain with a messiah complex.

Not him but the last chapter is what made Eustia great for me. The first four chapters were just an average 6/10 game, but the final sequence of events was stringed together perfectly to create a constant high of adrenaline, which then concludes in a massive explosion of emotions and catharsis. That's primarily what made Eustia memorable to me and it's one of the first games I think of when talking about satisfying endings. I didn't really notice any 180s and the build up to what happened was believable enough.

I beg to disagree, and also agree with the other anon. First and last chapters were fantastic, whereas the middle chapters were merely decent with few good moments in the mix. I think Caim's indecisiveness was completely justified since the choice, as far as he was aware at that point was everyone dying vs. torturing Eustia, made more difficult by the latter herself also wishing to help. It isn't until later on that he realizes that living in a world without Eustia isn't worth it and stands up against Lucius, knowing he'll probably doom everyone in the process. Lucius' actions were also rooted in logic and always tried to maximize the number of survivors, making him one of the few truly rational people in the game since pretty much everyone else was going to doom the city rather than do what had to be done. In general the last chapter managed to nail a desperate "everything's going into the shitter" feel.

Though I'm not sure what to thing about the actual sacrifice happy ending. I was genuinely expected the game to end with everyone dying.

These "defend the walls" levels are the worst fucking game design. The enemies hug the walls, and you'll hit the wall if you hit them, so all you can do is just stand there and hope that they separate from the wall and don't move in such a way that you turn back towards the wall while attacking them.

The side character routes in Senren Banka are just them talking about food so far. I'd hoped that it would at least be funny, like the chuuni girl from Dracu Riot's route.

Maybe I'll pick up Noratoto again, but this time read Patricia's route instead of continuing the gyaru girl's (Asuhara? Her route had dumb dark emotional drama). Things being funny are very important to me in moege. Or does anyone have any suggestions for something else funny? I thought Tsuriotsu was hilarious, so maybe oretsuba would be good.

also page 10, so new thread soon
