is it true that once you get a job in japan, you're expected to work at the same company until you die?
no paid overtime?
50h a week?

I'm actually able to go there for half a year thanks to my study, but all the universities I am able to chose from are in Tokyo, and honestly, Tokyo is one of the least appealing aspects of Japan (at least for me).

Traditionally, yes. The companies used to take VERY good care of their employees. Seems to be changing now though.

>no paid overtime? 50h a week?

This is a major issue. There are moves to put an end to this, but it all depends on your company. The really bad ones are referred to as ブラック企業 (Black Company). You will probably have an idea in what you are getting into before you get hired. You will need at least N2 (most of the good companies want N1) to get a job in Japan in most cases.

What are your options in Tokyo? Tokyo is gigantic, some places are better than others.

Meh, getting N1 is less of a problem than working 50h a week. (I think?)
At that point your life revolves around your job.
Maybe living in a western country has spoiled me, but here I can work 25~30h and still be considered middle class.

Not that anon, but that's what I thought when I went to Japan too. I ended up in Tokyo, but actually it's been much more enjoyable than I expected. Tokyo has festivals and events happening all around, and it's also central enough that you can take short trips to the actual countryside, like Yamanashi, Shizuoka, Gunma, and at a stretch Tohoku. It also quite depends on which part of Tokyo you're going to be in - it's a big enough city that you can have very urban areas like Shinjuku and Ginza and also more countryside-like places like Fuchuu or Hachiouji at the outskirts.

It could just be that I'm more of a city person than I thought too, but well.

It is becoming less common and more looked down upon. It all depends upon where you work though. I believe is isn’t all that much of an issue at the places actually willing to hire foreigners.

> Meh, getting N1 is less of a problem than working 50h a week. (I think?)

Getting N2 is about a year of serious study from 0 Japanese. Another six months to a year for N1. It all depends on the person, some suck up a second language like a sponge, and others like a rock.

>25-30 hours and still be middle class

Shit, can’t even do that back in the U.S. really. Maybe if you got lucky or went into academia (but even that has a lot of off clock work).

>The 10mm Voigtlander is about $1,000. It is actually wider (as in a wider field of view) than the 8mm Samyang because it is for full frame sensors.
The 8mm Samyang is 8mm on a 35mm sensor size equivalent, on APS-C the Samyang is 12mm and the Voigtlander is 15mm.

That being said the Samyang has pretty terrible vignetting on full frame and the Voigtlander is objectively a better lens in every measurable quality.

Have you ever used a camera that is not a cell phone? Literally every single photographer on planet earth uses tools like Lightroom, Darktable (or a literal darkroom in case of analog) to create a photo from whatever data/negative the camera records. There is no such thing as "not tweaking colors" and you must be seriously fucking retarded if you think it's less "noob" to let the camera decide color levels, white balance and exposure instead of the photographer because that's what happens when you don't do it yourself.

I'm not entirely against things like filters but the fact that you go out and take a photo digitally and then dick around with some sliders doesn't make it art, especially when they're trying to replicate the look of analog films.

If you are already in the country it is much easier to get your visa changed, so your employment opportunities increase greatly.

The biggest plus to getting a job in Japan is speaking the language. N2 is the bare minimum, N1 is preferred. They also care about your speaking ability, but if you don’t have the JLPT certifications they don’t give a shit if your speaking is perfect. Two years of University classes at most universities in the U.S. is NOT speaking the language. Most students who have taken 200 and 300 level classes end up in the lowest of 9 levels(each taking six months to complete) at the language program I attended.

If you have the discipline to immerse yourself and force yourself to learn Japanese while doing JET, that is great. But I have met VERY few people who are capable of that. You don’t want to end up being just another English teach on a short term contract who can’t speak Japanese and only has a BA so they can’t even teach University level courses.

I see. So rather than have an official looking piece of paper with a higher grade on it, you just impress them by speaking (near) fluently. And I don't think I'm one of those disciplined people. If you could please point me in the direction of the school you attended (?) I would appreciate it.

How much did you have to pay for tuition, accommodation and other expenses, apart from stuff like food, travel and clothing? I saw on the MJSP page that they estimated 1.2 million yen for a year, accounting for everything, food, tuition, accommodation etc. I think that would be feasible for me as a years tuiton here costs about 550000 yen, in local currency obviously.

N2 is worth quite a bit, many companies in Japan will hire workers with N2 if their speaking is good.

In theory N1 is native level, but in practice it really isn't. It suffers from the same problem as the TOEIC and other tests. You can learn the test, and be able to get a good score on it or pass it, but still lack proper language skills. This is especially true for native Chinese speakers because they can bluff their way past a lot of the test with their Kanji skills.

>If the goal is to get a job in Japan, and you are able to graduate from a Japanese university with N1 and also fluent English skills, then it shouldn't be that difficult

I have a question if you don't mind helping me out.

I'm around the same age as that guy (27) - I speak English, German and Portuguese (only the very basics of Japanese though). I already have a degree but let's just say it's a useless B.A.

Do you think it'd be a better idea to just go to a language school in Japan to learn Japanese and try to find a job or should I start another Degree in Japan?

>> No.18454041

>>18453961
It's a national university so yeah it should be good. I'm pretty far away from Hokkaido though so I don't really know a whole lot about it.
>>18453994
It's my understanding that having a bachelor's degree is important, not necessarily what you have it in. Obviously if you want to get into a science field then an arts degree probably won't cut it, but if you just want to be a salary man it shouldn't really matter.

Your major doesn’t matter in Japan all that much outside of STEM jobs.

Just go for a year at a language school and see what happens. Worst case you hate it, come back to the states, and have a slightly beefier resume.

>come back to the states

lol mate I'm not American.
I'd be glad to live in the USA if I couldn't live in Japan, but being honest with you, I think the USA is even harder to move to, there are some really draconian laws in place in the USA concerning immigration. Some qualified people get rejected while some illegals are able to stay there for years on end and nothing happens... It's really weird.

Anyway, to answer both of you

I don't want to get into a science field. Working with anything will do, really... translation, interpreting, travel agencies, anything, I just want to live in Japan and learn Japanese, it's a dream I've had ever since I was a child. I'm looking for the long term here btw, it's something I "have" to do, I've been putting this off for too long and it's the time to act now.

Do you think it's possible to change a student visa into a work visa? (assuming I go to a language school for 2 years as you guys suggested and then find a job there?)

Also, any recommendations for places where I should study Japanese in Japan? Would it be a detriment to go to Tokyo? What if I went to a place like Osaka or Kyoto, would their regional dialects impact on the way I speak when talking to someone from, say, Tokyo?

Sorry I was asleep.
It is very possible to change from a student visa to a work visa. Many people do it. You just apply for a change of status or whatever at immigration. You have to prove you have a job etc.
Really, it is up to you on where you study Japanese. If you want to go to maid cafes, and Akiba, and do Otaku shit, then you might want to choose Tokyo. If you just want to experience life in Japan, then you could choose somewhere else. Keep in mind, Tokyo is very expensive to live in compared to many other places. If money isn't an issue, then whatever, but if it is you will probably want to shop around.
In my opinion Tokyo is fun to travel to, but not a place I would want to live.
Dialect shouldn't matter. It's not like they are teaching you the dialect in language schools, they just teach standard Japanese.

>Really, it is up to you on where you study Japanese. If you want to go to maid cafes, and Akiba, and do Otaku shit, then you might want to choose Tokyo.

My admiration of Japan doesn't come from that shit (not trying to be mean if you like those, just giving my opinion).

I'm interested in Japanese history and poems, like the Hyakunin Isshu and the 戦国時代. I want to go to Japan to LEARN JAPANESE and work there and experience life there, not to go to maid cafés and buy manga in fucking Akiba. Granted, that last part is a part of a Japan too but it's something I have no interest in.

So really... I just want to experience life there and be able to prosper, I don't ask for much, life has treated me roughly enough already, I know how to appreciate small things.

Also, if you don't mind me asking
Where in Japan are you?
And one last question - do you think that it's possible to pull off studying at a language school and working part time?

Not all of the time but those 28 hours they allow you to work each week.

I do have the financial means to survive in Japan but I want to work there even if part-time because I'm thinking long-term here, I'd like to find a job in Japan that allows me to stay there after studying in a language school.

I mean if that's too hard I'll just save more money and start another Bachelor's Degree in Japan, I don't care, I'll do what it takes.

No worries.
I am in Fukuoka.
>And one last question - do you think that it's possible to pull off studying at a language school and working part time?
Absolutely. In fact most people work part time. Many people (particularly those not from first world countries) work over the 28 hours a week as well (illegally of course). Also long breaks like summer break and spring break, you can work more than 28 hours a week legally.
The Japanese language schools I know of don't have school all day. It's more like 4 or 5 hours a day (though obviously this probably depends on the school) so you'd have lots of time to work.
When you look for a job for after you finish the language school, you would generally be searching before/after you graduate. I believe a student visa gives you a leeway of a few months to search for work even after you finish school. I'm a student though, not here on a work visa, so I can't give you all the answers.
