I've been trying to clear that stage for the first time recently. I just got to Yukari's next-to-last spellcard (the one with the planchette) with no lives and bombs left, I lasted about 20-30 seconds and then pichunned. As for the part of the stage in that webm, I can dodge it sometimes but usually I just bomb.

I got this a couple of days ago after posting about my crippling tilt.

I timed out Misdirection by mistake trying to reduce the duration of the following waves, but then I fluked Curse of Vlad Tepes, had to use my remaining bombs on Scarlet Shoot and then somehow managed to capture Red Magic.

A thing I noticed is that since I started playing EoSD with the goal of getting a 1cc I've forgotten how to capture Meiling's last two spell cards. It used to be no problem but now it's a guaranteed safety bomb. I think I got to used to playing with a hitbox in the other games.

Only works with full power ReimuA/MarisaA/MarisaB. And for MarisaB you want to do the first three phases near the middle of the screen to get off some extra damage from her shot.
After the second yellow wave, you want to misdirect the first purple wave to the left or right before it fires. That way the purple and red waves don't have a weird overlap near the end of the spell.

False. Every shot should get the same amount of resources no matter what you do. Sanae's 'enhanced' trance gain doesn't give her a clear advantage over the other three, especially since the other three are still better than her.

Naw, just kinda playing whatever. HSiFS was my first 1cc though, it's just the easiest. Was working on PCB Extra as well but I cannot for the life of me get past Princess Tenko.

Princess Tenko is one of Ran's easiest spellcards. You just need to come up with a pattern, since what Ran does entirely depends on your position. I try to go generally in an up-down path diagonally, so that I can get through the butterfly bullets unfocused by going up and down. Just make sure to get out of the way of the stream of bullets she shoots, those are aimed right at you. The spellcard gets a lot easier if you move the same way every time, as you can memorize the motions needed to dodge.

>Might try EoSD soon, is there a way to make it any more stable?
I've never had stability issues with it. As a last resort, you could try running it in compatibility mode for Windows XP. This could negatively affect other aspects, such as performance, input delay. Also, try running it without any patches or modifications if you're using them.

I'll try both of those, thank you. I got the sense that it was a card that's easy when you figure out how to do it (well, I figure that's most of Ran's cards) but I haven't hit it too many times. Might get SpoilerAL and practice it since it's giving me that much trouble.

I decided to move up to Hard mode finally and started with HSiFS, eventually the Practice grind on Stage 4 was too much and I decided to try PCB.
Got my first Hard 1CC on my first attempt of a PCB run. Now I finally understand why PCB is considered the easiest game. I even lost two lives to one of Alice's spellcards, the one where the dolls explode aimed bullets at you, but the dolls spawn all the way down either side of the screen as opposed to Normal where they're only on the top.

The season and bomb is a part of the game, it is not meant to be not used, you should only do that if you are reasonably good at the game and have cleared everything it has to offer, and want further challenge.
Also most new players are crap at this game not because their reactions are bad, but because they are stupid and dont use their resources effectively.

This, having a route to bomb and release can help a lot, and if you're going to marathon practice, you should figure out at least the release route, and figure out which spell cards (Magic Sign "Gigantic Pet Bullet Lifeform") you're going to just bomb because it's either not worth the trouble or just too much of a risk.

Practicing makes clearing the game more rewarding. I 1cc'd MoF the first time I ever played it with ReimuB just by spamming bombs whenever I encountered any difficult pattern and it was the most unrewarding experience I've ever had in a shooting game because it felt like I didn't earn the skill necessary to actually beat the game.

>> No.18280920

After a couple years of occasionally trying for a day or two then putting it off, I finally beat TH15's extra today. I had it in my head that this extra was a bit harder than most of the others, and maybe it is, but the difficulty sure varies. Hecatia's moon card as well as Junko's noncards and second card were really the only stuff holding me back. It was just a matter of playing consistently and bringing enough resources to get through them.

Anyone else feel like Hecatia's survival card+last card were sort of letdowns after how hard the rest of the fight generally was?

In comparison, I barely even remember TH16's extra - I think I cleared it in just a day or two. I went to look at the cards on the Wiki just now but I can honestly look at one or two of them and say "yeah, I remember that one". They all look so plain.

After many failed attempts to 1cc EoSD with ReimuB I switched to MarisaB out of curiosity (I just wanted to take a break and unlock practice mode for Marisa too). It was awesome. I played Marisa for the first time and got to mid-boss Sakuya on stage 6. I didn't even use her powerful Master Spark that much, her movement speed is just so much better. Range was pretty shit though but you can't have all nice things after all. Patchouli fight was easier too (seriously, fuck Princess Undine). I think I should focus on 1cc with Marisa. Depends a bit on the game's choke points and the resources it doles out. Lives are inherently easier to lose so NM will typically be more difficult by default. EoSD only gives you two extra bombs so NM is clearly more difficult. In DDC you can bomb to get bombs so that might be easier than NB, or at least easier relative to NM in other games.

You want to stay on the bottom left of the screen as much as possible. When the moon goes along the bottom of the screen, stay right beneath it and follow it up and to the left a bit, and then slip through the winders when the moon gets close to the very left side of the screen. Keep in mind you'll have to be dodging random (?) stars the whole time. If you get caught on the right side of the screen, then unless you're really good at dodging while going above the boss you're dead.

>Fake Apollo
Chase the three moons as close as possible. Towards the end you'll have to weave through the purple bullets really quickly, which is fucking difficult. I usually bomb at this point. If you make it to the last cycle around Clownpiece, the moons stop before they reach the bottom left so if you stay there and dodge you can finish it off that way.

No. Also stop projecting.

Retexture patch is akin to adding HD textures to something like DOOM . It jarring and gross, but that is my ultimately my personal opinion.
Hitbox patch on the other hand will invalid all your runs because you adding something that wasn't their originally. Stop using it and realize the game is meant/plays without it.

Assuming you're correct here, the only real inadequacies are those of attitude. If he isn't talented enough to easily clear the game, then his determination is all he needs to be able to eventually do so. Would you try to deny him even that? Though I find it unlikely you'll succeed, as people have a way of not giving up once they're determined to do something, as your own words demonstrate, again assuming your assumption is correct.

True potential, no matter how it may vary from individual to individual, can't be achieved until one has such determination to keep trying no matter what, knowing they will succeed eventually. We are naturally imperfect creatures and some are more imperfect than others. This has the side effect of making talent useless in sociological applications. It only proves worth in some practical ones; but true strength comes from within.

For if you were to place yourself in a similar position, trying to attempt to do something that to you that is very difficult, you would not be in any different of a position, and it would only be your attitude that would draw the difference between failure or ultimate success. Difficulty is ultimately subjective, not objective. To judge another without true understanding or consideration is imprudent and spells arrogance. Would you believe yourself to be God, to place yourself above others? But as you place yourself above others, so will others place themselves above you, for if that is the game you play, you will find that it only places a void between you.

I'm really surprised at the use of "500m pndlist member" as an adjective.

That being said, hitbox patch is always invalid. One of the many staples of EoSD is that you can't see your hitbox, and if you can't learn to dodge without it then you're, to put it bluntly, a scrub.

>> No.18299497

>>18299474
Here's one thing I don't really understand about this: Something that comes in every game afterwards, is generally seen as acceptable there and noted as important to be able to aptly dodge boolats especially in later difficulties... and yet, somehow, it's not okay in EoSD just because it isn't vanilla.

And on the other side of the fence, you have things such as modifying(increasing)the number of lives you start with in some of the earlier games... it's considered invalidating of your run, even though it's a vanilla option and accordingly modifies your score.

It's almost like the community is trying it's best to make it as difficult as possible to get a valid score for players or something. In a game that is already widely considered by most to be difficult.

>> No.18299509

>>18299497
The hitbox patch makes the game easier. It is not in the original game. Any runs using it are invalid.

EOSD generally does not have the bullet density of IN or of cards like Knockout in Three Steps. And even if it did, it wouldn't matter because the hitbox mod makes the game easier so it is a cheat tool.

>> No.18299516

ZUN added in the visible hitbox for the later games so yes, it's appropriate to make use of that in those games where the creator of the game put them in himself.

If it actually modifies the hitbox, e.g. makes it smaller? In that case, I can understand it, then.

If not, I still can't. I understand what you're saying that the lack of a visible hitbox isn't as big of an issue because the game generally isn't as dense, and it is true that having a visible hitbox does make the game easier, but it is actually in fairly understandable ways. Having a visible hitbox gives the player a good idea much more immediately of what kind of movements they can make without getting hit instead of having to become intimately familiar with the game so as to innately understand where the hitbox actually is through practice and experience. The problem isn't that the lack of one won't hurt you that badly if you are already somewhat experienced at the game, but more that it will hurt you if you are actually new to it. Basically, the people who it doesn't hurt are already experienced enough for it to not matter and they are being strict, unreasonable traditionalists to newbies about it.

I think they should be considered in their own vein of valid. As in a separate scoreboard if that's what it comes to. It's true that it's easier and it's not vanilla but I disagree that it makes it invalid. The game is still as hard as before in technicality, it's just that it's easier to read exactly what's going on by using just your eyes. There's clearly a reason ZUN added a visible hitbox after EoSD.

It's like using Hidden in a rhythm game. It's not going to make an experienced player spit, but it will fuck over newer players hard.

>> No.18299645

>>18299629
>The game is still as hard as before
>it's just that it's easier

Reimu and Marisa's sprites are designed to make it relatively easy to know where the hitbox is. It's in the direct center of the bows on their back, where the ribbon is tied into a ball.
It's like adding laser sights in a shooting game that doesn't feature them by default. An important skill in the base game is able to tell where bullets will travel based on where your gun is pointing or where enemies are facing/point their guns. Laser pointers "only" make it easier for new player to tell where the bullets will go, sure, but no matter how you construe it, it's effectively removing a skill that is a part of the intended gameplay.

>> No.18299742

>>18299615
It literally makes no difference on scoreboards because of the score capping; nobody who increases their lives or bombs is going to get any score worthy of pissing at. I was just pointing at the irony of being a hard traditionalist and saying a traditional thing is fine because it makes the game harder and then, at the same time, pointing at a traditional thing and saying that it's invalid because it makes it easier and not harder. My point is that it's only the community's nuances of going down hard on newbs that encourage this kind of strict thinking. It is not in fact traditionalism but strict conservatism disguised as traditionalism that's lead to the prominence of this kind of thinking.

Now I'm not saying that's wrong. It provides a solid base to work with for scoring. But I think it's important to note that this kind of thinking is unwilling to consider, in detail, the validity of a player's achievements because it is so strict and unwilling to compromise. It's simple strictness which creates it's effectiveness is also what, in turn, creates the narrow-minded kind of thinking associated with such. There is a very wide variety of ways you can make these games easier or harder, and to invalidate them without taking a strong objective look at them just feels unfair.

It's that which encourages the community to essentially be what it is and what posters in here have sometimes demonstrated it to be: A cynical, strict community with a lot of assholes. The simple effectiveness of scoring strictness may be what it may, but I simply can't agree with having such a hard-headed methodology which basically encourages people to be assholes.

I read your post. Your whole thing on irony is unfounded because the mechanics aren't being kept or discarded because of "traditionalism", but just because it's different than the default settings. No hitbox isn't fine because it's a "traditional" thing, it's how the game came out of the box. Changing starting lives isn't bad because it makes it harder, it's because it's different than the default settings. I'd even argue that having lower than default resources makes a run invalid. Just get the game, hit the "set to default" button and go. It's not "strict" - you can choose to ignore this if you want, just expect to be shunned- it's not hard to understand and not worth this discourse.

saying there's "nothing wrong" with a hitbox patch is misleading/inaccurate, but if a dude wants to mod his game and doesn't post accomplishments as if they were made without the mod, then it's whatever.

regardless, a hitbox patch isn't a great recommendation because the player hitbox is the easiest hitbox to learn. you're still going to get fucked up a bunch learning bullet hitboxes. i suppose it could be useful for a few hours for the newest of players, but after that it's probably just a mental crutch.

Assuming you mean normal difficulty.

You have 3 "lives" starting off on the left, if those deplete then no longer becomes a 1cc and have the option to continue. The "lives" on the top are for that particular round. The amount you lose are tied to how late you are in the round. Lose that round you lose a life from the default 3.

Play defensively wait for them to attack first. Hold of charges for only level 2 or level 3 attacks (use level 2 mostly). level 1 for bosses and lily whites if you have a shot (some characters are better for this than others). Learn how to activate the spirits, and destroy them without destroying yourself so you can get a score bonuses/spell attacks and reflect some bullets back. Use Level 4 attacks when you see a "G" power up from fallen lily whites and bosses. Don't EVER bomb unless you know the cpu is about to die and it's a last resort. (time limit wise not from the cpus actual remaining lives)

Episodes 1-5 will only last around a minute. Episodes 6-8 can last from 2 to 3 minutes. For the TLB, its better to just survive as long as you can until you lose one life. After that she will die after the 3 minute mark. If you lose a life again, she will die just under 3 minutes. Try no to lose a lifes before Episode 6. Try to only lose life for 6-8. That should give you enough lives for TLB. You get more lives at 10, 30, 50, 70, and 90 million points. Every 5 million for extra.

1CC stands for 1 Credit Clear. A credit is used up when you Continue after a Game Over. (Think of having to insert an extra coin into the arcade machine in order to keep playing.) It doesn’t matter how many lives you use up as long as you don’t run out and get hit, which causes a Game Over.
Beating the game without losing any lives is a kind of self-imposed challenge some people do, called a no-miss clear.

Like you just snap your fingers and suddenly EoSD has seasonal releases, Pointdevice, PoC item pickups, spirits, UFOs, life shards upon spellcard capture, MoF's shitty power system, multiplayer, super long deathbomb window and cherry barriers.

OK after getting my first 1CC with her, I think Youmu in TD might be the best shot type in the game. She made the stages ridiculously easy and was good against bosses as well once I got used to her focused shot. She's pretty good in IN as well, I hope ZUN makes her playable again in a future game.

the strategy page on the wiki is bad. ignore it. read the gameplay page though.

some pellets are random, other are aimed. the game becomes easier if you incorporate streaming/tap-dodging into your movement.

you are momentarily invincible after casting a spell. this includes charge attacks. this is especially useful in crossing lines of eikidogs. charge attacks are also useful in general: they're more powerful, and they cause normal spirits to reflect pellets (which otherwise only happens in a chain or with activated spirits).

your spell can get eaten by the game if you cast one as your opponent is casting one. if you continue to hold z until the screen returns to normal (after the spell notification ends), your spell will not be eaten.

when things get hectic, make sure to unfocus every second or two. up to four lines of fairies can be onscreen at a time, but you have to be unfocused for the second/third/fourth line to appear. if you stay focused, only one line of fairies will be onscreen at a time, and another line will spawn only when the screen is completely empty of fairies.

youmu is the most fun.

>>18300482
>Play defensively wait for them to attack first.
not exactly. not reflecting pellets will keep things less hectic at first, but things will get hectic eventually so this becomes a secondary concern - something to only do if it's safe and won't mess up your chain/spell points.

instead, learn to manage your spell points (aka bpoints) and cross the 100k, 300k, or 500k threshold shortly after your opponent launches a boss attack, as this will cancel the boss attack and launch one of your own. if you're playing for a clear (or against a human) and not for score, let your combo meter deplete when necessary to set yourself up for further boss cancels at 100/300/500k. you'll get better at this as you get a feeling for how quickly your combo gauge depletes, how to set up good chains, how points increase more quickly as rounds go on, and how to focus to activate spirits and use them to keep chains going when fairies are sparse (and how to use activated spirits to reflect nearby pellets for defense).

as you play more, you'll also get a better feeling for when the ai should be approaching 100/300/500k, although it's also good to quickly peek at the ai's spell points every so often when it's safe to do so (and this is the only way to really know a human opponent's spell points). you'll also want to use your peripheral vision to keep tabs on when your opponent is charging its spell gauge. doing these things will give you advance warning of boss attacks; this way, you can already be in the process of cancelling it before it shows up on your screen.

>Hold of charges for only level 2 or level 3 attacks (use level 2 mostly).
never use level-three spells against the ai, and only use them against human opponents when they're better than your character's level-two spells. level-four spells (boss attacks) are useful in cancelling ai boss attacks when you can't quickly reach 100/300/500k. level-two spells should only be used against the ai when doing so is necessary to avoid taking a hit or to keep a chain going (or when playing for score) because your opponent will reflect some of the pellets from your spell back to your screen.

>Don't EVER bomb unless you know the cpu is about to die and it's a last resort.
no. bombing is situational; it's only bad when you bomb and take a hit afterward. bombing leaves you without any charge - and thus without a charge attack, which is an important defensive option - but if you can survive until you get your level-one charge back then bombing was a good idea. bombing is also always better than dying, too.

>Use Level 4 attacks when you see a "G" power up from fallen lily whites and bosses.
just bomb. and you don't need to, either.

My personal favorite is probably MoF, even if Suwako is mostly easy. Her spells are just really fun and have this cute gimmick. If someone is exploiting the hell out of the resource system to avoid having to actually dodge any of the threatening patterns, most people won't view that as a very impressive feat regardless of the difficulty it was cleared on. There's nothing wrong with playing that way if someone is only concerned with getting a clear but it doesn't make for what most would consider good gameplay.
