This chapter makes me wonder about Lily White actually. Akyuu supposed that she gets killed by youkai and resurrects in the spring, but with Larva hibernating, it makes me wonder if Lily hibernates after spring is over too. So why didn't he transfer ownership to someone else? I can completely understand not wanting to run batoto anymore, that's well within his rights, but this was a large database of scanlations and many smaller groups were using it as their primary upload method. Lots of manga from groups that have been disbanded in the years that batoto has been up is likely lost, and groups that had massive uploads like the Fukumoto mangas or the entirety of the Touhou mangas must either take the long process to reupload all their shit to another site like mangadex or hope fans just downloaded them all. Scanlation groups would have had to try and get the word out to fans to follow their blogs and shit instead of having the centralized hub with convenient feed systems like Batoto.

It seems like a very weird, roundabout way to do things, especially since he kept saying the moderation team was scrambling to back things up, and all scanlation teams were having to do the same thing. I don't believe that no one would have stepped in and attempted to host the site if he had told the moderation and admin teams. Closing down the entire thing, causing all these groups to find other hosting or causing manga scanlations to simply be lost, seems extremely drastic when the option to hand it off to a new owner could have been there.

Again, he obviously slaved over the site for years and is well within his rights to not want to run it anymore but the decision to shut it down entirely hurt a lot of people.

The scans aren't gone. In fact from the sound of it they're only not accessible now because he doesn't want bots scraping them. They "may" put them back up later or they'll probably just put up a download of their archive or something.

Speaking of that though, scans (of touhou comics) have always disappeared or become inaccessible after like a week. Do you have to have an account to see archives or were the uploaders just taking them down? I never use it outside of touhou comic scans linked from here so I had the idea it was some sort of temporary hosting.

I don't think enough people understand this. Scraping sources to put shitty copies on other sites for adbucks is huge, and much of the reason people are blind to this is when they don't give a shit about where they're reading. Most people tend to not know or care about the translation group or the site it's on or anything because they'll just google stuff and take what's given, which of course will often be the SEO-driven scraping sites. People complaining about stuff "not being accessible" only say this because they have zero clue about where thee content comes from and mainly see batoto as just another place to read. Just due to how batoto works, the sources are almost always available from the individual groups.

The lack of Daiyousei rubs me the wrong way.

So in light of the situation with Batoto, are there any other alternatives? I'd prefer to keep it to just one site, if possible.

Dynasty Scans generally has the most complete selection of Touhou stuff and a excellent reader, lets you download chapters in a nice neat archive and doesn't require registration.

Touhou Wiki is good for picking up older stuff when you're desperate..

Batoto going down just mainly affects smaller scanlation groups who relied on the it to be registered as a group on MangaUpdates. I'll be more worried about the day MangaUpdates goes down as that is pretty much the main directory for finding most author information these days.
