Good question. You're probably fine after you've gotten japanese nationality and dominate the language, then you can just go to uni, study what you want and work.

I suppose that's universal but here in my country when you're 18 you can apply to go to Japan and join an uni, you'll need to have some basic knowledge in japanese language, you only have to pay the flight. But of course you'll need good grades in high school, you are able to do this while your 18-21. After that you can do the same and apply for p.h.d or whatever it's called in americucklandia, but then you'll have to know a good chunk of japanese. If you go right after high school they'll teach you nihongo there.

This doesn't exist for significant long-term learning of pretty much anything. In Japanese, and other fields, I see people expecting some magical outline of every single thing there is to learn and in what order, that will make everything easier, but you need to struggle. There are too many things that you CANNOT have your hand held through, no amount of paragraphs would be able to explain it, you need to feel it and overcome it with your own mind.
By the way, it doesn't say hope it clicks, it says use it as a fucking reference.

Adding an extra step helps with the retention considerably at least for me. As for starting ease, it's the multiplier given to a new card that modifies its interval delay, so by decreasing it the intervals will be shorter in the beginning for fresh cards.

In terms of self learners not living in Japan, it seems that people who make Anki part of their routine not only have a lower likelihood of giving up but also learn faster. I mean when I look into my Anki deck and see that I should know 6000 words I feel pretty good about it, especially seeing that there is a limited number of words I have to learn anyway. If I didn't use Anki I'd be bummed out about there still being so much I don't understand, despite having studied for a year now. It's probably the best way to learn readings anyway.

Being an ankidrone is a state of mind that you have when you obsess over Anki and neglect the actually important parts of language learning.
>What's that mean? Pass wrong cards?
I no longer fail a card if it's a tiny bit wrong and it had a short interval time already, as long as the word doesn't seem particularly valuable, but rather hit "hard" instead. Some cards just don't seem to stick properly through Anki alone no matter how many times you relearn them if you don't encounter them in the wild.

I think I understand what you're talking about but I don't see the issue. Relearned cards on the first review might not get factored into the "young" card retention but Anki tracks retention for "learning" cards as well, so you can see if the amount of cards relearned decreased or just moved from "young" to "learning". Besides, this is a nonissue for me because I have a high retention rate on the first review. The extra step is to specifically increase the retention rate on 2-5 day intervals which would be counted as "young" cards either way.

I know in my case, once I hit around 7k I started adding fewer cards and reading more because reading was that much easier at that point.

I'm still a newish shitter so take that with a grain of salt. But Anki has been tremendously helpful to get me going and give me a strong foundation of vocabulary and introduce me to kanji.

Its not always clear to me what I should do to better my japanese, but its easy to open anki and do my daily learning/review and doesn't take me too long. Its just pain-free learning and review that I don't have to plan, prepare, or really think about.

He is a proven learner of multiple languages, but its because of that I find it hard to buy into his methods for learning. What works for someone learning his 20th language doesn't work for someone learning their first non-native language.

His advice pretty much can be summarized as such:
>only do things (reading, learning, watching, listening) that you enjoy, period
>do not learn grammar
>do not do exercises
>do not use flashcards (unless you have lots of extra time or enjoy it)
>all of your time should be spent reading and listening, nothing more
>its all about listening and reading to surround yourself in the language so you absorb it
>you aren't going to understand everything and will forget a lot, but look up what you don't know and try and make as much sense as you can while reading/listening

He seems to have some good points and I've watched a ton of his videos but I don't know how practical it is when it comes to japanese.

If you want to learn to write kanji from memory without reference, make kanji recall cards in Anki, imagine the strokes in order and check against the stroke order font on the back of the card (or actually write if that works better for you). Front of a card has a couple of words using that kanji that are reasonably distinct, with the kanji in question replaced with kana (or blanks with furigana or whatever formatting you prefer). If you're talking about just getting better handwriting, scheduling is pointless, you probably are just going to have to grind. You probably don't need either, but do what you want.

Any of you guys learning Japanese for some very petty reason yet still motivated? I started learning because I wanted to read about idol stuff in original and still want to do it but I find it a rather weird reason to go through all that process of learning a language just (or mainly) for that. This guy gets it. I write down new kanji from 2k/6k on spare paper, and then transfer them to my notebook at the end of each week. I found my retention increased quite a lot because of it, and it doesn't add much study time overall. With 20 new cards and ~150 reviews a day it only adds about 10 minutes, plus an extra hour on the weekend to transfer your new words and recap them while you do it.

Now that I started to read quite a lot I noticed I mess up similar looking kanji in anki quite frequently.

I guess it's because in reading you have context and can anticipate what words show up next so you can never mix those kanji up, but in anki you don't have that.
So reading makes you get rid of those distinctions because you don't have to memorize them anymore.

How can you anons look at typical website-size text and make up kanji? Even if I know them I have to blow up the page like 3x at least to even begin to recognize it

>> No.18230117

>>18230110
Some anons will be douchebags about it, but tldr its just context. You'll have a general idea what it might be, and from there just narrow it down to what makes sense.

>> No.18230118

>>18230110
After a while the strokes stop mattering and you see components as blobs with an approximate shape. Context determines how to treat ambiguities.

Is it probably not one of the better types of "read more" content to do in the early stages of reading then? And better to leave until I'm a bit more comfortable with reading/kanji in general?

>> No.18230146

>>18230142
Honestly this particular problem can only be remedied by "read more". It's not about your capability in recognizing particular kanji or words, it's your experience reading text in general.

Its in part read more, you'll have to do it eventually.

pretty much answers what I was asking about, thanks

>>18230206
I don't think that's entirely true. There are a lot of times when I'm reading manga I can recognize words I have learned and not even have to look them up. But then there are times where I'll copy/paste words from anons' posts here and even though the result is a word I obviously know (in a couple cases the very words I've recognized in manga) and had to do a double take and look up nice and close at the text and say to myself "really? well I guess it kind of looks like that"

In that post I was referring to legibility of kanji. It's worth dissecting taking a minute to dissect a blob and deduce possibilities instead of just throwing up your arms and going "lol who the fuck can read this anyway", especially since most "blobs" identified by beginners are not actually hard to read at all.

for you there's little you can do than either build tolerance to difficulty or try to find something where your interest in the material outweighs the pain

maybe try reading the source material of your favorite anime?

Some, if you want to be a professional translator there's worse language to learn. Japan is still one of the largest economies in the world.

But honestly, unless you're going into the language field its pretty much useless. (Teaching English in Japan works too, but you really don't need to know Japanese for that)

For you typical job, knowing it is just a small thing you can put on your resume to show that you do know more than just english and that "may" help in very small situations, its unlikely to actually change whether you're being hired or not.

But yes, a lot of people from my old high school are currently in Japan "teaching" English and it pains me quite a bit because they are giant weebs and can't speak Japanese for shit yet they're over there making fools of themselves.

They did at least go through high school Japanese classes so you do need some prerequisites I think, but the bar is very low.

There are plenty of people over there who can't speak at all, so it could be worse. Unless they frequently imitate anime characters, I suppose. Also, from what I've heard in various places,
>you do need some prerequisites I think, but the bar is very low.
You need a degree, any degree. Teaching-related if you want a better position than assistant to an actual teacher. You are not supposed to use Japanese at all during work, and there are plenty of examples of people who did learn a single word of Japanese before arriving in Japan.
