The only correct way to fit generals for good is by keeping a close eye on them, and warning then nipping them off if they effectively become a separate board that has nothing to do with the board they're in, or fully off-topic chat rooms that have barely anything to do with either their subject or their board. The problem is that doing this requires effort and continued vigilance over an extended period of time so nobody is willing to do it.
And fixing the problem with the idol and gravure threads would probably require getting an entirely new board for those things, as they don't fit in very well elsewhere. I don't know, if /qst/ was created without much resistance despite the board being forgotten and mostly useless I bet it would be worth trying to bother Hiro about an /idol/ (and specifying that it's for 3DPD idols to not bully people who like Idolmaster and such).

If they were actually generals. Most generals are specifics. They're about one indie game instead of like indie games in general. They're about a single series that ends and then the threads continue. There's nothing wrong with discussing something popular over and over and condensing threads while that happens, but when it's died down, the threads need to too. The only moderation they need is someone to forcibly delete, or better, lock the the threads with a message telling them its time to stop once they're mostly chit-chatting and bumping instead of discussing current and new content. Making /vg/ was the biggest mistake, nevermind it taking half of /jp/'s topics. There's no reason any game needs a little sub board. There's no reason something needs an active thread if there's nothing to talk about. They just become hangouts, and then crazy insular covens.

Stuff like the 2 VN threads have a purpose, as they aren't about any specific thing. Mahjong, it's being played constantly. Stuff like the monstergirl thread goes too far in the other direction. It's like having a general just about kemonomimi, or a general just about maids, or a general just about tits. Those aren't subtopics on a board anymore and there's no specific content. "hey this one new eromanga has a maid in it!" is insufficient.

Not everything needs to fit in on 4chan. If some shit doesn't fit, then don't post it here at all. moot was firm about this with furry and loli but then started giving in, recreating /n/ twice until it became /pol/ and then not deleting /r9k/ when it started ruining everything.

Anyway, my point is, making an idol board would just open up people to go insane with the stalking and photo manips, and would inevitably draw people from /tv/ i.e. the actual pedos and/or stalkers on this site and lead to someone doing some fucked up thing and posting about it there. Just make them condense their threads by label or whatever akb and smile project are and stop splitting off because their subgroup got bullied, or leave 4chan entirely. That and hiro/admins would have to deal with the junior idol issue more directly since idols tend to be underaged and in bikinis in images, so people would argue it should be okay to post u17 and below gravure.

Wasn't 4chan started in 2004/2005? Then that guy's been there since the beginning practically.
I've been here off and on since early 2008, possibly late 2007. I honestly can't say if it's gotten better or worse.
The only thing I really miss from old 4chan were some of the memes. I haven't seen TWINKIE HOUSE in years. Being able to dump images with a script automatically was fun too, the porn boards were a lot better then.
