Kadokawa is a major anime and manga publishing company that owns an enormous fraction of the industry. When they happened to stumble on success with Kemono Friends in 2017 (a COMPLETELY unpredictable outcome) for...some reason (lots of speculation, no answers), they cut loose the staff solely responsible for making the franchise popular at all. Now they're milking it like they always wanted, except if you're a fan who knows the story behind the franchise (and there are VERY MANY who do), you know that it's now a shambling corpse.

Thanks Kadokawa. It didn't even last a fucking year.

There were some comments going around by authors who mentioned unfavorable experiences dealing with Kadokawa and according to some more conspiratorial /a/nons they deliberately sit on a lot of licenses without producing or selling adaptations, but I don't actually care about that.

That I agree with. I honestly didn't care much about the anime adaptation back in the day, so I didn't recall it at first.
But yes, it's mostly Kadokawa's fault that the anime turned out the way it did, so they deserve the blame.

KanColle arcade is not really a port, it plays much differently than the original PC version and Kadokawa doesn't own it either, they just license the IP to Sega. And there was also KanColle Kai, a game for PS Vita, also quite different. I think it was quite a flop, they're not selling them anymore. IP really is quite underutilized and Kadokawa bears responsibility for that. In the end, the only good things about the franchise are the browser game, which C2 manages, and the Arcade game, which Sega manages, so I think you're right after all.

I love to read these tinfoil hat conspiracy/fraud theories, but this is quite unlikely. Kikiyama's page went down at least once, without any other page in the host having problems (meaning it probably expired). But it was back up after a few days. So, whoever Kikiyama is, it's unlikely that they are completely our of the picture.

What's much more likely is that Kikiyama doesn't give a shit about whatever anyone else does based on their game. Fanarts, fangames, mods, merchandise,... it's been coming out for ages, and there was never anything against it in the webpage, or anywhere else.

It obviously wasn't, but if you paid attention to anything from Japan last year you saw how popular it got. The series had the potential to become at least as big as KanColle, but getting murdered so quickly ruined any chances it ever had to at last try getting there.
And while it definitely isn't the only series that got killed due to bad decisions, it's still a bizarre case where a series became extremely popular out of nowhere and then was killed off just as quickly.
