Usual genres like pop/electronic/rock, and genres normies can understand even if they don't listen to it, like jazz. However I think the most important thing when introducing someone to Vocaloid is the song's tuning. It doesn't have to be realistic or human-like, it just has to be actual good tuning (so nothing of the usual squaky, high-pitched cute stuff or most of the stuff with the older voice banks)

When I introduce people to Vocaloid I usually start with electro music. I explain that I love the synth/electro sound, and so the concept of "synthesized music with synthesized voice" is easy for people to swallow. Usually start with Mwk, since his style is pretty similar to a few western electro artists I listen to. I like to play Crystalline and bits of the Entrance Dream Music albums for similar reasons. Circus' 715 album tends to go over well. If the person doesn't like electronic music, keeno's usually not a hard sell, since it's very easy listening. That Wintermute album too, really. Can branch out into well-tuned stuff from other genres depending on what they're into.

In my opinion, the vast majority of the popular Vocaloid scene music is not at all normie friendly. Non-weebs just do not want to listen to kz, Pinnochio, etc. (though a few wowaka songs may pass). Squeaky uguu pop music is fine for us since that's our jam, but it's not the average person's cup of tea. You just gotta know your audience.

Mod also doesn't seem to give a shit (or perhaps has given up).
Also noticed how some are trying very hard to fit in by pretending to be oldfags which makes the whole thing even more unpleasant, similarly to what you described.

Aside from obvious software choices, nowadays with the internet, all you really need to start your journey as a producer is some music theory and probably a midi keyboard.
Everything else comes from practice and grinding until it sounds good. Doesn't matter if its vocaloid or just soft synth. Though I guess knowing Japanese also helps with vocaloid in particular.
