What does this icon to the left of some equip attributes mean? Also, is Water Ball spellbook not generatable or incredibly rare? Haven't found one yet, only for Water Beam, and I need it to do the Wet + Element Scar + Lightning Ball/Bolt wombo combo, cause it feels like my Magic Ball is pretty weak compared to the damage output of my pets, especially since there's no way to magnify the damage like with lightning. Exactly as I said. Undine is a novel from 1811 about a water spirit. Rackam is a well known 19th century artist that illustrated the English translation. Pic related, which is Huldbrandt the knight steadying his horse as a goblin hounds him, was originally drawn by him. So seeing it and recognizing it from Elona was pretty funky.

Spiders are garbage. Their only redeeming qualities are low INI and browbeat via evolution.
The main problem with spiders is that you absolutely need to make them use martial arts, since that's the only way their poison/paralysis on physical hit will proc.
Since martial arts trains needs ridiculous levels before it starts doing great damage (1000+), spiders are going to be hitting like shit for 90% of the game.
On top of that, wandering penguins and black cats receive browbeat on evolution as well, and they're far better pets than spiders.
I really wish Ano would unfuck spiders by giving them evolutions that weren't total fucking trash, but it can't be helped.

It keeps the black cat's cFloat, Eye of Insanity, and unique lick ability while adding browbeat and the usual stat boosts.
More importantly, the black cat is part of the "Servant" race, so it starts with standard humanoid equipment slots.

Most of the late game enemies acquire ridiculous resistances to everything but raw magic, including nerve. High nerve resistance reduces the chance of paralysis, so naturally a paralyzer's love bites won't be doing dick in terms of applying status.
Since the paralyzer's unique ability isn't effective on late game enemies, the paralyzer ends up being just a really shitty martial artist with no health or mana.
The real problem with spider's bites is that they only ever apply one status at a time (poison or paralysis), and only do so frequently early on.
When you need to slap something with status ailments, you're almost always better off spamming any sort of chaos attack, especially chaos ball since it hits groups.
Chaos attacks are downright silly for crowd control and stunlocks since they can apply almost every ailment in the game, sometimes applying multiple ailments with a single hit.
Most ailments (paralysis, confusion, blindness, etc.) completely nullify an opponent to the point where they are a practical non-threat, and since these ailments are stacked on top of each other, the opponent has still three more ailments to deal with if he recovers from one.
For example: If the enemy is both confused and paralyzed, he'll still be stunned when the paralysis wears off, since he's still under the effects of confusion.

Compared to the stunlock potential of high level chaos spam, the paralyzer's bite is weak. It's outdone by any pet with a weapon that has a decent chance to inflict chaos damage.
If you want a melee pet that can apply status and potentially stunlock single targets on melee hit, just hand one of your pets Storm Blade or Mournblade.

Martial arts peaks REALLY late in the game. We're talking punching the gods to death tier.
By the time you've reached the point where your paralyzer can bite gods to death, it would still be outdone by literally anything else with equal stats and MA skill.
To name a few examples:
>An android with equal stats + MA could punch gods to death while having 75% physical damage resist thanks to cArmour
>A gokiburi with equal stats + MA could bite gods to death while having complete immunity to every magic type except raw magic (assuming cResEle carries over upon recruitment)
>A defender (lol) with equal stats + MA could punch gods to death while providing great utility with free resurrections
>A skeleton berserker with equal stats + MA could punch gods to death and do additional damage at higher risk with cTemper
>A cloned Vessel the white hawk weakened via Maile the marionette shaman with equal stats + MA could punch gods to death and use clear mind for additional unarmed damage

Etc.
The spider's unique ability (status bites) is only effective early on, but at that point his MA damage is terrible.
Late game his MA damage is good, but his ability is so useless that literally anyone could replace him and do his job better.

Keep in mind that any pet can tear ass in the late game as long as they're raised properly.
A spider that's been good stats, health, skills, and whatnot can kill gods as easily as anyone else, but you'd need to put in much more effort to get the spider to that level compared to a god pet/little girl/whatever.

Not bad at all. Harpy initially is a generic physical attacker with average stats across the board, HP/MP/speed around 100 across the board and no special abilities or spells. Unexceptional, like the spider.
Harpy's first evolution, however, is dumb as hell. It gets stats boosts and one of the most broken abilities in the game, Super Regene. At low health, the harpy will activate SR and start rapidly regaining health. As soon as the Harpy does that, heal it immediately. Not only will it be at high health, but now it'll be shitting out stupidly high self healing every turn. Good melee pet. Get a <another heart> ASAP and evolve that little shit.

As for the second point, the player character can still get stuck in webs deployed by a friendly spider if I remember right. Since the spider is most likely going to be in close proximity to the player most of the time, this usually means that the player will be the one most often caught in the webs, rather than the player's enemies. Same issue with slimes/acid slimes, who do more harm to player than the enemies.

With equipment you want four things first:
>Resistances
>Damage Value (the higher the number = more likely to dodge, the left value on wearable equipment)
>Protection Value (the higher the number = more damage reduced when hit, the right value on wearable equipment)
>Status resistances (It prevents blindness. It prevents confusion. Etc.)

PV and resistances are especially important because spells are UNDODGABLE. Your pet might be the fattest fucker in the world, but no amount of HP will stop a pet with low RES/PV from being fucked by bolt or ball spam.
Moreover, most spells SHIT status effects all of your troops, especially chaos ball, mind bolt, thunder vortex, etc. As I mentioned earlier, an opponent slapped with several status effects is completely helpless. The same is true for your pets. You'll want to eliminate the most crippling conditions (confusion, blindness, sleep, fear) ASAP. Make it a priority to eliminate those weaknesses.

Other effects like poison and bleed are not as crippling, but NEVER underestimate them. Poison starts off RELATIVELY weak but can easily turn into badly poisoned, and then you're really fucked.
Bleed starts off strong and gets way of hand very quickly. If your pet doesn't have bleed res, keep them out of range of bleeding enemies (kite them with spells) or they will fucking MELT.

Of the four pets that gain browbeat on evolution, spider is undoubtedly the worst of them.
Scorpions retain the bite ability but possess better HP (90 to the spider's 50), though they are beaten in speed and lack the web ability.
Already mentioned the black cat's abilities.
Most enemies do not use poison as a means of attack, and acid can easily be played around via acidproof liquids. The most dangerous enemy you're likely to face midgame (when you don't have access to a wealth of high res late game) who uses poison is the black lizardman, and even they aren't all that dangerous. The most poison res provides is resistance to the poison status effect, often gained from stray chaos spells and whatnot. Even then, you can play around it with healing spell spam/potions. Ice on the other hand is one of the most common attacking types, and is used by several spammy enemies, including ice drakes, ice hounds, minotaur magicians, blue Baptists, etc. One of the more annoying bosses of the game, Estork the Doggod, spends almost his entire fight spamming ice breath. Ice hounds hunt in packs. An individual ice hound's breath hurts like a truck, but an entire pack's worth of spam will melt you in one turn. In addition, the penguin possesses a higher HP stat than the spider (80 to the spider's 50). If you think the penguin dies quickly, the spider will absolutely destroy your will to live.

Unless you have an endless stock of bubble ball and/or bubble bolt (something which can only be gained at a reasonable amount in late midgame to lategame) to instantly remove any webs that your spider spawns, you will be constantly at the mercy of RNG web spawns. Movement is absolutely key in Elona+. You never want to be trapped in a disadvantageous position when you can help it. Let's say you get hit by something that causes confusion next to a door, like being hit by a pumpkin's potion spam. You accidentally open the door only to come face to face with a suicide yeek jihad squad. You are confused, so you can't use a teleportation spell or read a teleport scroll, and you don't have dimensional move yet. Since your spider is faster than you, he immediately webs fucking everywhere. You get stuck on a web trying to escape. Jihadists pour out and murder you to death. You die. Any pet that forces you to play around them is a bad pet.

You're forgetting you can teach any pet body blow and run wildly with custom AI and they'll always be amazing no matter what. Some things might be more amazing than others but it doesn't make spiders booty.

Super regene is ridikkalis. Whip up <another heart> and she'll have 100 life and never die as long as her gear is ok. Tell her AI to hit that at like 60% or something.
As for gearing pets I look at their bitflags and innate abilities to decide what they'll actually be doing. cTemper? make it a heavy melee dude. Defender has cheer and healspam and evolves into absolute protect? Keeping her in melee doesn't seem smart for the last bit, so how about a 2-3 range railgunner so healing rain hits melee pets and ranged pets alike while dispensing CC through chaos ball invokes on non-healing/buffing turns instead of wasting them on melee or shadowstep. etc.
Ultimately, it's Elona, so with grinding and herbed-in curarias everything works out in the end.

Not only are they a garranty to interupt you, the bleeding will actually kill you easily since it just keeps stacking.

Is it normal for the game to have a tendency to crash if you don't hit any buttons for over a minute? If I afk for a bit, there's a high tendancy for a crash to occur within seconds of coming back. Even opening a new window to check the wiki for a few seconds can cause this.
It's not game breaking but it's been annoying me since I started a few months ago. I've tried compatibility mode in windows 7 and the different xp service packs.

As a sidenote, character creation has always been exceptionally crashy. Even if I try to speedrun through it it is likely to crash. Took me about 10 attempts to make a new character last week.

I was complaining about Custom doing something similar to me in the last thread. Waited until the new thread to say that it has stopped, and looks like it was a good call, because it fucking didn't.

Regular Elona+ had only crashed on me one time in about two years of me playing it, so I'm almost certain that this is a Custom issue. I could even launch two different games after browsing /jp/ for an hour, then go to sleep, and then realize that Elona was running in the background that whole time after waking up, and the most that would happen after I'd get back to it would be it running slower than normal at first.

I use custom on win7 and have never had this or any other problem, even though I also let the game run for extended periods of time. What OS are you running? Properly using compatibility mode? Maybe another program is causing problems (antivirus?) There has to be an identifiable cause to your problem. If all else fails try a fresh install.

I have a similar character (crossbow) but love my pets a lot. I enjoy doing just about everything in the game. It's just so relaxing to grind while listening to something or watching a show.

If you have a balanced, well equipped group you can punch several tiers above your weight class. Most of my party has barrier to stay alive and every tag-duo has a role. We're Lv80 and under taking it easy in the void. Overworld dungeons however keep any delusions of being invincible in check, a five head god blasting everyone at once nearly decimated me

Sounds to me like your squad still needs some work, if you want to stick with them. You could tag something tanky with your angel and make her melee, or you could keep her ranged and tag her with the cat. You should spend some time crafting resist gear for each of them, and get them all a nice supply of AP in the earlier levels of the Void.

Craft them all living weapons and transmute their gear to the highest pv type, give them pocket money with evochat, pump speed at Leold, share herbed meals with them regularly and from then on it's smooth sailing (they should almost never die at this point).

Still suffer "distracted" debuff. Never used tobacco. What do? (inb4 use tobacco)

I created a new character right after installing Custom. The game crashed three times before I could gain control of my character - once before I enabled compatibility and two times after I did, one of them during character creation itself, before I could even see the intro.

I'm using Windows 8.1, and the "install" is about as fresh as I can imagine, since it's 1.73 from axfc with Custom 1.73.1 from Mega slapped on top of it. I enabled compatibility with Windows 7 for ElonaC.exe as well and the two original .exe files. Been using the same OS, from the same disk, for Elona+ as well.

I used to think the crashes happened because I had that custom chat server's link active, but the problem remained after I switched back to default server.txt and enabled auto retrieve.

Right now I have enabled full control permissions for every file in the game's directory AND set compatibility with Windows 7 for all users for ElonaC.exe, and so far I haven't seen it crash, though it may be just another calm before the storm. Also, curiously, when I was changing security rights for the game's directory, Windows had trouble accessing one of the files in my save folder (shop1058.s2). I had to do it manually afterwards. I wonder if that had something to do with the crashes.

All your pets should preferably stick to a single weapon type and attack type. If they have pickpocket and you give them pocket money occasionally, potential shouldn't be an issue.

Yep. Potential as you might've guessed is a multiplier applied to all incoming exp. Your primary stats themselves also have their own potential, which you can raise by getting breakfast (get relationship with a pet up and go to bed between 8-11pm and it will cook for you), drinking potential potions, and the trainer/high relationship adventurers that might visit your house. Best method for stat pot is the blessed potions, they are expensive and only start showing up when you invest a fair bit in a magic shop so better start saving up and blessing some water.

Congrats, you have contracted ether disease. It's basically Elona's callback to chaos corruption from ADOM and is unavoidable but treatable.
A potion of cure corruption will cure one to two ether mutations, while a blessed variant will cure two to four.
The easiest way for a beginner to ward away the beginnings of ether disease is to play blackjack and get five wins in a row. Here's what you do:

>These are found right next to the left entrance to Palmia and at the bar in Derphy
>You will start with ten casino chips
>Bet one and only one
>Try to win as many rounds as possible off that one casino chip
>Repeat until you run out of chips

The easiest way for a beginner to get more cure corruption potions is to:
A. Get more casino chips by harvesting material spots in dungeons.
B. Get a potion as a random drop from a bejeweled chest that drops from a dungeon boss.

You will most likely do A a lot in the process of getting B, so run low level dungeons and gather as much as material as you can.

Mine dominated the party up until recently. Started out weak but quickly grew to deal tens of thousands of damage a turn, because the multicast trains their casting very fast and they pelt enemies non-stop. But my weapon-using pets caught up to her eventually, as enemy resists keep getting higher and we're using leveled living weapons now. Still exile is very strong, highly recommended. I don't use custom AI so no clue about that.

Every item has a limit on how many enchantments can be added, and random artifacts tend to have a lot of relatively useless enchants that take up ''space''. Precious artifacts with their static stats thus were a good choice. But this is godslayer level late game stuff (act 3 only and need a ton of gain attribute scrolls and huge amounts of materials).

They're extremely useful for pet owners. You might have noticed pets automatically use them on their own when they hit critical health and they heal them to full, so give one to them. It's like having auto-life on. I'm in act 3 and still use them, was thinking of going to collect some washings too

Make sure it has all skills. You can use gene engineering (capture high level monster/possibly breed it at ranch, engineer onto low lv pet for levels). You can make sure it always has enough to do by e.g. making it shadow step all the time if it's a melee pet instead of it wasting turns running at the enemy. You can also tag it to a higher level pet so that when the stronger pet clears the battlefield, the weaker gains a ton of exp.

To summarize: Speed of the pair is lowest of the two, gold AP and experience are shared, sometimes partners block attacks for each other, when shadowstepping both teleport at once, and because they still get independent turns one can move the pair and one can attack in the same turn (left is always in charge of movement). Extremely useful, increases survivability and efficiency and allows stronger pets to train weaker ones for you.

Well if you want one strong pet to improve fast by itself you might not want it to share its shit, also tagged pets don't show up in arena selection and stuff (have to untag first). Other than that maybe if you don't like the way the sprites overlap. I fix that by editing the sprites, personally.

well it has downsides
1. arena matches. tag doesn't work there.
2. aquiring gold. tags share their gold, even if one already has alll potential at max and the other at hopeless.
3. one of the pair will lower the speed of the other. good for ap mining, but not for overall preformance.
4. every time you interect with the pair youll get aprompt asking which pet you wanted. its annoying.
5. line attacks will hit both pets. other aoe will do too, but normally line won't hit both those pets at once unlike other aoe.

the swimming and traveling skills train it. travelling can be gotten from little girls at the slave market, for swimming you'll need to dominate monsters to get it. frogs are a good start.
there are potions of speed upper and potions of hermes blood. they are very rare, but you can grind small medals and go for mirai to buy them.

Gene engineering can be done very early in the game, it's just slower. Scrolls of ally are pretty easy to get pretty much from the start, and without Knockout it's easier to get the gene machine at the beginning than any time later. If you managed to get a fire drake, you are more than eligible for engineering anything except perhaps mass produced mutants with exotic limbs.

I am currently level 25, went there with 3 pets(they are aroung level 27, 26 and 17) but just managed to find the ladder to floor 3 before running out fireproof blankets. Although it keeps saying the place is hot, it didn't burn through my blankets just by walking, but that may be because I float.

You will need magical maps and digging(or teleports) to get through. also, if you are a mage, Area spells should work wonders in there, since there are a bunch of small rooms FILLED with monsters.

also, i suggest keeping some skills at300+ potential (if you have costum you can mark some skills to show if their potential ever drops too low). since you like using guns, marksmenship and firearm is a must. other than that, fishing, at least until you get dimensional fishing skill, and the crafting quintet, because those are very usefull. cooking and gardening are also good to raise at least until you can herb in safely.

The coat is miracle quality, so he should use blessed change material scrolls instead of material kits (those are reserved for living/godly quality gear, which scrolls don't work on). If you meant craft repair kits, I'd use those only after changing it to the final material (usually adamantium or dragonscale). Resists are more important than dv/pv, it'd really only be a keeper if it has one or more of them at a decent strength.

Save up and start investing in magic shops, you should be getting potions of potential and change material scrolls. If you get a nice stack, you can change your gear to adamantium. If you look up the quest list on the wiki, you can start taking on the easier ones to get some artifacts to tide you over until you start making your gear. Remember to enchant them at the smith too, joining the fighter's guild helps with the costs.

craft repair kits. they bring the true potential of an item. they can be found at general vendor- the same one that sell ores but not rods. they are near other usable items in the shop inventory like lockpicks or leashes.

magic is very strong and usefull. its a nice utility with stuff like return (can be crafted with jewelery btw) and 4-dimen pocket. as far as usefullness, well special ammo can do magic damage and area of effect damage... if you are going for area of effect damage get control magic skill to reduce damage done to allies. you can give it to your pets by g. egineering punks (i think) into them, or to yourself by raiding the magic guild (tough you are too weak to do so now.)

It's entirely possible to have adamantium equipment without crossing over into the heavy category, it doesn't have to be every piece. Most of my equipment is and I'm at medium. An adamantium composite girdle only weighs 2 stone. Not to mention you can be in heavy armor and have no issues depending on what you're casting and whether you changed class to warmage. Failing a buff on occasion isn't a big deal.
