How do you guys get over a slump? I've been trying to read but nothing seems to register anymore. Even tried to the point of forcing myself sometimes just so I could reach my daily reading quota. I feel like taking a break from reading for a week or two but then at mid-day I would feel guilty for not reading, then open up a VN and then I find myself back to square one.

Would you recommend Aria (the manga) to someone who is still largely at beginner level?

I can make sense of simpler stuff fairly reliably (something like Yotsuba doesn't really give me any trouble), but things with long sentences and a literary style of writing can give me a pretty hard time. Also, I still don't know many words so anything with a diverse range of vocabulary is going to be challenging.

I was also considering reading Maria†Holic, so if anyone who has read that could comment on its difficulty then I'd appreciate that too.

I don't know too much about DQ. That could be for historical reasons then, as DQ1-4 were all originally in kana only. Just a cute relic or whatever. Someone who knows more can chime in. And most Level 5 games are known for having furigana with every kanji like in Layton or 妖怪ウォッチ so that is a little strange. But really just do anyone else. I suggest Falcom.

So I changed my steps back to the defaults for both new cards and lapses and did a custom study review of forgotten cards before going to bed as the person in the previous thread suggested and today's anki session took 100 minutes instead of the slowly increasing 75-90 minutes that I had had before, and I'm going to have to spend even more time reviewing forgotten cards later. I'll stick with this method for a little while to see if things get better, but considering the amount of time that I spent reviewing forgotten cards yesterday (20 minutes), unless my retention starts to seriously improve from it, I think this method will only be more time consuming.

I'm pretty sure I'll only have 1 or 2 hours of free time on work days, and it seems like I'm going to have to spend the entirety of that on anki, and setting the new word limit lower than 20 isn't even an option to me, I'm not going to get into why. If I were to only read on weekends, would that be sufficient for learning? Would I still be able to reach near-full comprehension of any anime or visual novel within 4 years doing that? I'm literally willing to spend every moment of my time that isn't spent on work, driving to and from work, showering, preparing my meal, eating my meal, shitting, pissing, hygiene, hand-washing, laundry, cleaning, shopping for necessities, or sleeping on learning Japanese, so I sure hope so.

If I set it any lower I'll be failing a huge amount of cards and I'll also constantly feel rushed and will get cards I could have gotten correct wrong because of it. Honestly, I think you're better off just starting a new deck from scratch. What you're doing now sounds like it's fucked beyond saving.

Try to think about where you went wrong and how to avoid repeating the same mistake(s) again.

Some tips:
- have audio on your cards
- read and listen a lot so you can encounter the words you're learning in more and more new contexts
- try to limit the information on the backs of your cards as much as possible (preferably only 1 or 2 definitions, but if you really must then 3 at the absolute maximum)
- gradually add new cards to your deck (20 a day) instead of bulk adding them by the hundred (this way you remember where the words came from which helps you remember them)
- use a serif/mincho font

In general it's not difficult (especially if you already know the story) but there are stretches of text in the form of SCIENCE that are way too dense for a beginner.

You could just skim those sections, but why not read C;C (which is much easier) instead. But a warning: both VNs are long, since you're supposed to do every route.

Being comprehensible is a requirement to being input. It does not turn something into input. Movies with no speech in them at all can be entirely comprehensible. This doesn't make them input.

Similarly, things that are extremely familiar to you on every level are less and less deserving of being called input the more familiar you are with them, because you process them less linguistically the more you're familiar with them. You process them as this particular thing you know.

Sentence cards, unless highly randomized, are exactly this kind of thing. Not only do they contain a very narrow amount of linguistic information, you become familiar with the structure of each individual sentence. After five or so repetitions you stop processing them linguistically unless you force yourself to. They stop being input.

How fast do reviews decrease in Anki anyway? I thought I'd go to a fraction of my usual reviews in like a week of no new cards but I've been doing no new cards for 3 months for 2329 cards and I am still doing +50 reviews at +80% retention every single day and it's just not going down. Forecast says I already have another 500 lined up for the next month and after this month is over it's surely going to be 1000 again. It just feels like these reviews are never decreasing.

So I got really lucky and I've been attending courses taught by a native Japanese guy which, by some miracle, started this October in my small hometown. Though the progress is a little slow to my liking and we are following Genki lessons, I gotta say I'm enjoying them a lot. Also the teacher is kinda amazing, he's a 70 year old guy who speaks fluent English and also knows Arabic, French and I think Spanish? Sorry for blogging but I felt like sharing this.

I'm with you my friend I still cannot believe it's happening although it's been already two months.
