Depends on what you mean by 'secondary Touhou fan' I've enjoyed all the games, including PC-98, but I must admit I prefer the windows games even though I appreciate the games they evolved from. Truth is they are better games, music, character design, bullet patterns (though I must admit some were pretty fucking awesome in Mystic Square) and though we may laugh, plot and art. It's only natural seeing as both the technology and the authors skill have progressed. Everything else is nostalgia goggles.

I don't see how simply bringing characters from PC-98 over to Windows with zero mention of the pasts they had and often complete changes in character design makes for 'proof' those events happened. It's just wishful thinking.

As far as I can tell, PC-98 are only canon within themselves, you can't take anything over from them to the Windows game because it doesn't fit in without massive changes and assumptions. Alice is now a youkai with no history with the heroines. There is never any mention of Marisa working under Mima. Yuka is just badass strong but doesn't have the 'ultimate magic' in Gensokyo. When they were brought into the Windows games they were re-written with the setting in mind.

PC-98 games were good, I won't flaw that. But they aren't relevant in the current story unless reintroduced like the others. Better off going back to hoping ZUN will bring Mima back or something if you want them in so bad.

Ok. I'll concede those points seeing as I missed them the first time around and you're correct. I also have to concede that it is possible they happened as far as current canon is concerned, though it relies on half remembered statements (Reimu remembering she defeated Yuka, but not Yuka. Alice remembering she fought Reimu, but not Reimu) that could have just been made in jest. Still, it's stronger then no evidence at all.

My main line of thought is that a lot has changed and certain bits just don't fit in too well with the old stories. From my perspective it seems at the very least ZUN is simply ignoring most of it and rewriting what he wants to bring into Gensokyo.

Don't think about it too much. ZUN is doing whatever he pleases with the games, so don't expect consistencies. Like he said in an interview, it would be weird to take a character like Mima and put her in the next game since how are you going to explain her disappearance since MS? It would be awkward I think. But he never denied their existence, when the interviewer asked where Genki was, he just said it was living in a pool in the back of the shrine, for example. He is too nostalgic to let old characters go, but chooses to create new characters for each game instead of bringing back old ones. So they are in limbo.

Personal preference. Admittedly there has been some amazingly retarded new looks from time to time from ZUN, especially with TH11, but some of the earlier characters really worked along with changes to the older characters.

Marisa, Reimu, Yuka and Alice have all improved for the better in my opinion. Yeah, we can laugh at the art style, but when drawn by a competent artist you can see the outfits themselves work really well. I suppose the same could be said when you bring out good art of PC-98 characters but generally most of them don't do it for me. Mima is probably the most memorable more for her staff thing then anything.

I'll admit it comes down to taste whether you think he did his best character design in the older games or not, but personally I think he's topped PC-98 designs in the later games, that and more or less took inspiration from perhaps.
