Newton and the Apple Tree looks to be a collaboration between MiKandi and Sol Press, instead of just a Sol Press release. Seems like an odd combination, though I would guess that Mikandi would handle the physical side of things (and perhaps licensing) while Sol Press would handle the localization.

>> No.17953478

>>17953270
Seems like it, Sakura Sakura isn't even out yet, so another project seems hasty. But then again Mikandi is actually retranslating (or at least heavily editing) Libra, so I don't see them doing the localization either.

I personally think that Mikandi would be the ones more or less in charge of managing the kickstarter, since their kickstarter did really well compared to Sakura Sakura. Mikandi might also be in charge of merch Sol Press isn't equipped to make.

Even if Sol Press was running it alone, I have to think that Newton and the Apple Tree is simply a more appealing title than Sakura Sakura is which should give this new Kickstarter a better start. Sol Press though seemed ill prepared to handle the logistical side of the Sakura Sakura Kickstarter, they might have reached their goal but they only raised $28k and have a huge amount of physical rewards to fulfill (while bending over backwards trying to appeal to everyone, be it multiple versions of the physical release based on if one wants R18 content on disc or not, as well as their mixed honorific approach).

>>17957141
Libra's successful Kickstarter was in large part because of the good timing, beating the rush of titles that came to Kickstarter the following year. Though underestimating costs (both for localization and physical goods), along with sales of VNs on Steam collapsing between the Kickstarter and the Steam release, lead them ultimately to a loss. Even if it wasn't that successful, thanks to dealing with Libra for a couple years, Mikandi is probably in a better position to handle to logistical side of the Kickstarter than Sol Press.

Is more a thread that just discusses upcoming shit and the state of the industry. The only time it really gets active is when two or more autists get into an argument and no one backs down, con season, a notable release happens (both good or bad) and people discs the translation quality, and when industry drama happens.
If you want VN discussion, then sadly /vn/ might still be the best place on the net even if it is full of shitposting. It mostly comes down to it being active making it win by default and even then you can only really get anything from it if the release is new and other people are playing through or the game is popular/a meme. Only other real alternatives are Fuwa and Reddit and both of those are pretty poor and limited on what is discussed, plus also slow from what I have seen.

>> No.17962977

>>17962947
/r/visualnovels 's discord is also an option, but people discuss other stuff more, like anime, manga or something going on in their lives.
I guess it all comes down to whether you find people you like talking to or not.
Plus I'm not reading anything right now so I can only discuss titles that I read before or maybe the process of translating a VN, though it's better taken to #tlwiki I guess(which is fucking dead). I idled there for couple of days and nothing happened sans for people logging in and logging out. I guess VNs are truly such a small niche. Especially for people who read jp ones, not DDLC, KS or other garbage(how can they burn through threads like /vn/ never can).

Even this thread is a shell of what it use to be. People translating or were in the industry use to post here a fair bit but now we are lucky that someone like good haro will even answer a question during a convention.
I can kinda understand why, but it doesn't change that it is harder to get updates from the source with it like that now and people have to rely on snippets from twitter and offhanded comments elsewhere.

Okay, whatever. I'll just start with what I want to discuss.
Do you think SP will go further with Giga?
Like will they decide to localise BSZ, Baldr Force, Baldr Heart?
I think they will at least wait and see how Baldr Sky does on kickstarter or even later at Steam. After all BS is the best and probably most profitable in Baldr series. They may not choose to localise BSZ as it gets more hate and bad PR or Force because it's....old you know. The graphics and shit...
Well, even if they do choose to, we'll have to wait for 2-3 more years, I think. Considering their incompetency...

Maybe, but at the same time even people in the industry have abandoned being active here. From what I have read in the past they still lurk here, since this thread is still pretty much the base that people use to get updates on translation progress so they can still see what people say, but don't post any more unless there is an urgent need.
>Are fan translators no more than fuwa MTL division now?

>Do you think SP will go further with Giga?
I think Giga will be looking hard at the sales numbers before they decide on anything. The whole thing is full of questions right now anayways so it isn't even worth speculating. We are not even sure if kickstarter is a sure thing or being fully funded in house or if it is getting 18+ content right now or who the translator for it is. Their new tracker doesn't even have it listed either so we can't see anything about it.
Is a shame JAST gave up on it years ago. They apparently got really close but fiction happened over unmosaiced h-content.

Sekai Project told Giga they had a nearly finished translation with all programming issues resolved. They had to renege on that because they fucked up negotiations with Aroduc hard. They still have all the programming stuff because Doddler's happy to grab his ankles for them, but they've had to put together a new team, willing to work for very low pay, under a very tight timeline, and unethical enough to take Aroduc's work and rewrite it. I know when MG worked on Sakura Santa, the MG programmer was forced to fix a bunch of broken code to get the game routing to even work properly. They also performed the same qc process they would any localized game and made a lot of small changes to improve readability. I hear Winged Cloud were beyond paranoid and constantly worried that MG was going to screw them over, and eventually jumped ship back to Sekai (before eventually ditching them a second time). I'm not sure if they felt MG were overstepping their authority by making changes to the game or what, but winged cloud didn't seem very rational about the matter. I don't know what triggered them to jump from Sekai to MG in the first place, but I wouldn't be surprised if it was that bizarre behavior that drove them to it, rather than anything Sekai might have done.

Anyways since Sakura Santa reverted to the old version when they left MG (or it should have), if you have the launch version of the game and the current steam version I bet you could compare the scripts and see what had been changed.

Focusing on one heroine is fine, but you'll need to restart from the beginning to get the harem ending which is unlocked only after corrupting every heroine all on one save file. Each heroine has 1 ending that you unlock just by repeatedly advancing their story, so there's not really much info to tell about them.
For threesomes, you corrupt the heroines in the proper order as described in the readme. Directly prior to the corruption of the second heroine, a button on the second row in the action screen will appear. That kicks off the threesome route for those two heroines. Keep pressing the button on the second row and you'll get the threesome ending for those two heroines.
And that's that. Aside from the harem ending and clicking the buttons on rows 3-6 for optional H-scenes (which are unlocked through item collection and fully corrupting heroines), that's how you get 100% and every ending. It may have been better to do more direct handholding via a step by step guide rather than describe how the game works in general.

$31.2k goal this time around which is somewhat higher than Sakura Sakura, though it helps that Newton is a significantly more appealing title than Sakura Sakura was, and their PR reach should be a fair bit broader with Mikandi being on board.

I wonder if Nutaku helped funded the localization, or if they just gave the publisher a deal as it was ready to be released. Either way, between picking up this, Wild Romance, and adding a few Denpa releases again Nutaku seems to be going after Japanese developed games again for their storefront, which had been largely absent since April.

At the very least, Newton and the Apple Tree is off to a much stronger start than Sakura Sakura did. It is nearing $13k now after a few hours, which Sakura Sakura didn't manage to get until the 2 week mark. It should have no trouble reaching the $31k Kickstarter goal (or the $34k stretch goal for a couple bonus scenarios that seem to have been a Japanese in store bonus). The $51k through $86k LN stretch goals are probably a bit of a stretch. Despite bringing MiKandi on it doesn't seem like MiKandi will be doing much, as the Kickstarter page just says "MiKandi Japan is on board as a crowdfunding consultant and promotional partner, and to see the project through to game launch."

Looking at the Kickstarter itself, the prices are somewhat higher on the physical goods than Sakura Sakura so they'll also likely target a higher Steam price (digital $30->$40, physical $40->$55, Collectors $80->$90). Not exactly a surprise being a newer, higher profile title. They oddly also have one tier that is Japanese only (which contains a few digital goods, the physical artbook, and the Printed & Signed Shikishi, but no copy of the game), with every other tier being outside of Japan only.

They answered on the comments page of the Kickstarter that they'll be doing the same dual honorifics/no honorifics options that they did for Sakura Sakura. They also do include something on the Kickstarter page about translation quality immediately after referring to things they identified about Sakura Sakura, but the statement doesn't actually seem to be saying much.

>The Sakura Sakura visual novel Kickstarter campaign taught us a lot. It was Sol Press's very first project, and we've identified key issues and have worked on responding to community feedback in order to address them.

>One of the key risks when it comes to visual novel Kickstarters and projects is that translation quality is a major issue. In order to increase quality, the translation will be produced with the oversight of popular industry veterans. They will constantly check to make sure that the translation is up to par, and will sign off on it. The actual translation will be done by an individual whom they have tested and have approved of.

I don't think the game is actually available, because you just get an error when you try to buy it, but comparing the demo to the japanese release, the only thing changed that I could see is that the blood in the deflowering scene with Ami (red hair girl) was removed. Both changes seem odd considering other titles they have on their downloadable storefront. I suppose removing Haruki's scenes might have just been an audience thing, as Nutaku has no problems with the content seeing that School Idol QT Cool is on there, and plenty of the titles they grabbed from MG and others have CGs that include blood.

No /vn/ is trash. I'd much rather make it its own thread on /jp/.

>> No.17980126

>>17980076
Emm. Isn't this thread a kind of mirror to the /vn/?
Like what is going to happen if there are no meme posters. What are people going to discuss and how intense would it be compared to /vn/ shitposting.

>> No.17980185

>>17980126
Well these threads are ultimately about VN translations and current VN localization news. Of fan made or official nature. And things related to it.
/vg/'s /vn/ is a cesspool of fucking anything. It's a VN centric /b/ discussing anything that's hot or anything that any rabid fan or shitposter wants to bring up.
And that makes it shit for a numerous different reasons. Making a mess of and disorganizing the threads being one of them. But there is also the fact that provided you haven't read absolutely everything it's also one of the most likely places to have whatever you haven't read yet spoiled.
But even if you aren't concerned with spoilers. If you want to discuss something from a year or a couple ago all while others are discussing a newer and or hotter thing. Even if there are some others in the thread interested in your topic of discussing too, your much more niche in comparison discussion topic. Will just get drowned out instantly by everyone else discussing everything else. Then the bump limit is reached and it's off to the next /vn/ thread with your old little discussion rotting in the left behind thread.

Though ultimately even with all that mind. Even if you are discussing the new hot stuff. The place is rather terrible to do so. With everyone discussing other topics anyway including perhaps the second latest fad or whatever.
And ultimately, all the clearly off topic trash. All of the above was still assuming a scenario where everyone miraculously actually stayed on on-topic discussion. But that's never the case and the place is a cesspool. Why anyone would ever actually prefer discussing the entire medium in one restricted little mess of a chain of threads. Over an actual board dedicated to it. Is beyond me. That /vn/ even became a thing baffles me, it grew to be just as bad as I first imagined it would be. But to my surprise that appears to be exactly what the people browsing there prefer it to be. Which really just boggled my mind further. I don't understand but whatever floats your boat I guess.

>> No.17980241

>>17980185
Well, I'm there for some cheap memes. I'm that bored, apparently. Concentrating on translating is hard so I come there to get a bit distracted and relax my mind. Should probably just translate for a fixed period and then go do something meaningful in my life rather than hang in /vn/.

>> No.17980265

>>17980241
Well if memes and shitposting are explicitly what you're after. Then sure /vn/ should deliver.
But if you actually want to discuss any of the contents of any actual VNs. The place is honestly terrible. But all the power to you.

>I'd much rather make it its own thread on /jp
Enjoy your 5-10 posts a day. Can't really call it discussion if there is no one there to discuss stuff with you, and the low post count also just feeds back to less people looking at the thread.
As you pointed out in >>17980185 noise to discussion ratio is high but you can still get discussion there because the thread is active and people visit it. With the way you worded things you end up sounding like a person who complains about no one discussing stuff while not bringing a topic to the table to discuss. You just have to bring up a topic that is slightly interesting and then you might have a 30% chance someone might hop on and then all it takes is at least two people to keep going and you have your discussion. If you are distracted by the other posts then you might have ADHD.
Also if it doesn't work once then just keep at it with something different.

>> No.17981253

>>17981178
>and then you might have a 30% chance someone might hop on
Don't you realize those odds are really poor?
It's low to the point that it's a pretty good bet that it won't actually happen.

>Enjoy your 5-10 posts a day. Can't really call it discussion if there is no one there to discuss stuff with you
I mean I can only speak for myself. But I am patient so I really don't mind. And /jp/ to this day remains a slow board so your thread is more than likely to survive all those days too, making actual discussion possible.
Meanwhile /vn/ dies in less than a day and then all discussion topics brought up in the thread, whether or not they were discussed or not. All die. The majority of which are not brought up again in the subsequent thread.

So yes I do legitimately prefer the former over the latter. Even today.
That said, I have to say it was a lot better before /vg/ was made. Then you'd get more than 5-10 posts a day on /jp/ since people still actually browsed /jp/ for VN discussion. And it's still the one official board for VNs so it honestly beats me why that still isn't the case.
Your main argument for preferring /vg/ over /jp/ appears to be the higher frequency of posters. But the only reason the frequency is higher at all to begin with is simply because people left /jp/ for /vg/ in the first place. If people hadn't left /jp/ then /jp/ naturally be slower in comparison. So clearly people left /jp/ because they wanted to leave /jp/ and not because /jp/ had too little discussion. But of course that also means that if people actually chose to use /jp/, /jp/ would be faster again. But clearly everyone already chose to leave.

And frankly if people dislike /jp/ so for whatever bizarre reasons, then /jp/ is likely better off without /jp/ anyway. But the most ironic part is that I am still mostly convinced that we're still dealing with mostly the same people regardless. Only that these people appeared to figuratively hold their breaths or whatever whenever they were on /jp/, only to profess how "yucky" /jp/ was as soon as an alternative like /vg/ appeared. Even though they're still among the very same people as before, only at /vg/ instead of /jp/. But whatever. It's honestly not like I care that much any more. Still kind of weird to see /jp/ go from the activity it had to the relative ghost town that it is now. Not that I really mind, /jp/ being slow was always one of the most attractive aspects to me ever since it was first made as a split from /a/.
