Why is Sumireko so hated in the Touhou fanbase when she is the closest to a Touhou fan in the games?

She’s considered a really negative character since she’s basically a nuisance than anything to Gensokyo. Invasive and has no friends and she generally just sits back and observes in the story. Also she’s kind of a dick and with her only relationships being with Mokou, Renko and Merry she has little fanwork. She has a cute design and I like her though

Mamizou always tries to act like a tough guy, like one of the big players, like someone important who deserves attention for her schemes. However, it's been shown a few times in the manga that she's pretty much clueless about the inner workings of Gensoukyou, and the truly important characters all but ignore her even when she stirs up (inevitably minor) trouble. Yet despite never accomplishing anything of note, she continues to act utterly smug, self-satisfied, and superior, like she has it all figured out and everyone is dancing in the palm of her hand.
For me at least, it's that misplaced, undeserved air of smugness that makes her less likable. But even so, I don't totally dislike her either.

I get that but as shitty as a character like that can be written I like her. She’s like a wise old youkai from a foreign land who’s basically an older sister to an already extremely powerful youkai. I feel like if she had more time for development she could become a really stable character and back up her smugness. Also I just fell in love with her fight and her theme my first run through TD Extra.

she's less an observer and more of an idle commentor, just here because she gives the viewpoint of an outsider on gensokyoan life and culture because sanae is too deep in the magic shit to really give that kind of viewpoint

Well, she is a rather smug dick who thinks herself better than others, whose introduction was breaking her way into Gensokyo and threatening to bring it down with her when it didn't go her way, being rather unapologetic about it and trying to remain in Gensokyo even after being humbled. She does get better, but first impressions last.

Fanbases simply don't react well to seemingly edgy, creator pet Mary Sues who basically force their way into the setting, which is more or less what she did.

There is also the notion of her either being an unflattering representation of Touhou fans themselves, or their OCs, or an isekai protagonist in anyone else's hands.

I imagine some of the hate also comes from Mokou-Keine or Kaguya shippers, for example, for her buddying up to Mokou.

I do like her and all, but can see it from this perspective.

Japs seem to like her just fine going by the polls (unless I'm to understand that characters like Kanako, Tewi, Eirin and Sekibanki are absolutely abhorred by them, as they all ranked lower than Sumi for three years now) and outside of here opinions towards her tend towards the neutral.
