I've always wondered about how people get good at arcade games. Everyone starts out as a scrub, I can't imagine people hogging the machines for hours everyday grinding and practicing til they actually git gud.

Imagine going to the arcade center, standing there for hours on end, spending tons of money.......just to practice, and depending on how fast you learn, THEN you can start doing the head-turning challenging stuff, because no one cares about some scrub spamming the same song on easy for hours on end to learn the mechanics. And when you factor in the amount of players for a given game, seems like it's more important to set up MORE booths instead of attracting more players, since each will inevitably be hogging a machine for hours.
It's like trying to finish an RPG game in a video game rental console, just doesn't seem very effective time and money wise

Probably no one who's good at arcade games got good in the arcade. One thing to get out of the way is that your skill floor and ceiling are determined in some way at a physical level, like reflexes and hand eye coordination. Second, reading is a huge determining factor in ability. So if it's a game with a console equivalent like beatmania, stepmania, project diva, taiko, you can get good at reading without going to the arcade at all. Especially since these games tend to also have ported controllers, the transition from home to arcade is super easy. And with games that don't have gone ports, there's also a skillset that transitions over from any vsrg. In my case, when Future Tone came out, I was getting E's on 7-8 stars sightreading, and perfecting low Extremes in a couple days, despite that being my first experience with it.

back then those big torrents were merely a convenience to newcomers, they didn't actually have everything. i used to skim them for any albums i didn't yet recognize. i've been a digital collector type of person my entire life, vocaloid especially ever since i found it in 2010. i just thought it was a really cool new sound. had a respectable collection up until i lost everything in 2015. been trying to rebuild what i had and add more since then but it's taking a long time to do it.

i've listened to thousands of albums over the years and used to make a point of not entering an album into my collection unless i felt it had preservable merit or wasn't complete crap. i really appreciated my collection as i had curated it back then, and i plan to make this new collection in much the same way, and be the sort of person who is willing to preserve the genre for the future, because it's been that influential of a musical movement to me.
