I actually saw a show on TV where they were comparing dialects and just speaking traits from different regions and there were some hilarious ones, but notably for Fukushima if someone is telling you a story and they pause its common to prompt with だから, no matter what the story is about.
So if someone tells you that their girlfriend dumped them you say だから because you want to know more so you can sympathize with them, but it sounds like you don't care.

Depending if it is subtitled or not, generally it is much easier to pick up the important parts if you have the text.
If you are having to work by ear it will be much more difficult.

As I mentioned, though, there are also usage differences, and sometimes vocabulary differences, to pick up that even Japanese people from other regions don't know about.

It's certainly not impossible to deal with and learn, and most of the time they will use "standard" dialect when dealing with foreigners, but it is interesting and there can be some gotchas in there that crop up once you start getting to know a person in a new region well (so they stop using "standard" with you).

JET is a program for importing native english speakers to teach as assistants in classrooms. There are other programs along this vein, though much smaller. I personally detest the JET program for unimportant reasons. For the purposes of actually getting there, its probably the widest catchall. Just look at some second step integration programs and act for yourself while you're on it.

It's not high-brow entertainment, but it helps. Hear a word you don't know? Google it. If you want to learn some comprehension and phrases through entertainment without sitting down and *learning*, those are some of your options. I don't have time to explain in depth because I should actually be studying for an exam I've got tomorrow morning, but basically: Engineering Degree = more immediate field knowledge = better hiring prospects and higher initial pay.
Additionally, I might end up hating Law School, but I know that I really enjoy engineering so if I decide all I want is an EE degree, I can just call it good and find a good, high-paying job much easier than if I had just done pre-law studies.
On top of all of this, I've been self-studying Japanese for the past year or so and I'm taking the N2 in five days. I hope to take the N1 next year. Being able to do whatever you're trained to do in two languages is an automatic boost to your salary, so long as you find a job that utilizes it, i.e. project management for a company like Sony that has separate design departments for Japan and America and needs the two of them to be able to collaborate as seamlessly as possible.

I don't really blog but here's some fun fact I learned from locals

I made friends with some drunk ojiisan and the master(owner) at a sushiya, and they told me that these monkeys at Kinugawa weren't Japanese monkeys, but Taiwanese monkeys(they had a long tail, Japanese monkeys have short tail like a rabbit).
Apparently some of these monkeys go rogue and start terrorizing the local ryokan and onsen. Like 10-20 years ago there were about 100 monkeys going apeshit everywhere, and some villagers like the master at the sushiya bought guns(assuming bolt-action rifle, didn't ask but I doubt they'd use a shotgun) and hunted these monkeys down. Now there's only 20-ish rogue monkeys out there and rest of them lives in a pretty sizable caged area in the mountains.

I kinda feel bad for the monkeys but it can't be helped. But after seeing some social hierarchy shit happening with the monkeys in the cage, this story felt like something out of Planet of the Apes franchise

Because the train lines are so low it is very noticeable how they get covered by the snow and then get all clean and shiny when a train passes through. It is a really nice touch. Also the nature (trees and mountain) is a nice addition we didn't have before. It is a nice winter camera.

I personally agree and think Yunokami Onsen is much more comfy but many on this board have a fond memory of the Aizu station. Many here were dedicated followers of the Aizu station webcam before it was decommissioned

I don't think so, that's just a lightbulb. This is a view of the other direction(standing on the bench) from the same place, and there's a pole that's about the same height. From the stream it seems like you're looking down on that pole, so it has to be from a higher point but there's only trees and I didn't see anything hanging from there.

That's a common fitting for cameras, looking at the view from the camera it doesn't appear to be much higher than the light fitting on the pole in your photo there and the view area seems to be correct for that vantage point.

Also, the Aizu Wakamatsu camera was "better" because there was a lot of movement and different things happening on it. From students to workers, drunk people and all sorts of stuff the whole day.

The Yunokami one is better in terms of appearance, but not much happens. After a while you even recognize some of the people that catch the trains everyday.

So anyways, the guy did show me around aizu and the castle. And he wanted to take me to Aizu-Tajima because it was 'closer'(must've been that way 40-50 years ago when he left Aizu because it definitely wasn't faster by train). What I do is have ffmpeg extract the frames and then compile them into a timelapse using ffmpeg afterward.

This extracts the frames:

Then you take those and convert them to webm with:
