I actually saw a show on TV where they were comparing dialects and just speaking traits from different regions and there were some hilarious ones, but notably for Fukushima if someone is telling you a story and they pause its common to prompt with だから, no matter what the story is about.
So if someone tells you that their girlfriend dumped them you say だから because you want to know more so you can sympathize with them, but it sounds like you don't care.

Depending if it is subtitled or not, generally it is much easier to pick up the important parts if you have the text.
If you are having to work by ear it will be much more difficult.

As I mentioned, though, there are also usage differences, and sometimes vocabulary differences, to pick up that even Japanese people from other regions don't know about.

It's certainly not impossible to deal with and learn, and most of the time they will use "standard" dialect when dealing with foreigners, but it is interesting and there can be some gotchas in there that crop up once you start getting to know a person in a new region well (so they stop using "standard" with you).

Depends on what your own specialties/preferences are.

>>17936213
As mentioned before, it depends greatly on your background. In terms of risk/reward, doing it during your studies is probably the best in my opinion.

JET is a program for importing native english speakers to teach as assistants in classrooms. There are other programs along this vein, though much smaller. I personally detest the JET program for unimportant reasons. For the purposes of actually getting there, its probably the widest catchall. Just look at some second step integration programs and act for yourself while you're on it.

People want someone they can relate their culture shock and issues unique to themselves to, so why not others in the same boat? You can still want to be there but also want the comfort of viewpoints and attitudes you're already used to.

That being said as the devil's advocate, I don't agree with that approach at all. I got a windfull of that shit when I first moved to the US, and I feel it just places an artificial barrier between both integration and cultural understanding. I've known people in the US who, after a decade, still don't 'fit' and can't go without leaning on their own immigrant community, and with time I'll be able to say that about here too.

Just to keep this thread on topic (sorry!), lets lament the HEAVY downsizing planned by JR Hokkaido. If you're a fan of derelict lines, now is your chance...

This so much. Going to a country which doesn't have a significant number of native speakers of your own language just seems so bizarre to me, unless you're doing it specifically to learn it by immersion.

If you really want to go somewhere, you need to know the language!

>> No.17939818

Then again, there's no reason why that should be a reason in itself.
There's no way you can't watch anime for at least 4 years and not have picked up some basic Japanese comprehension. Hell, watch unsubbed TV shows, news streams, weather streams, variety shows, LINE Live, Nico Nico Live, or even Youtube to force yourself to adjust to listening to raw normal/day-to-day Japanese. It's not high-brow entertainment, but it helps. Hear a word you don't know? Google it. If you want to learn some comprehension and phrases through entertainment without sitting down and *learning*, those are some of your options. You might be a "weeaboo", but learning the culture and language will help you adjust faster and keep you from being treated like a special-needs child all the time (not that you won't anyway on virtue of being a foreigner).

I said no animator(I started as an assistant animator - "Dohga") makes that kind of money. Was an absolute beautiful experience. I had no problems fitting into the new culture as i studied it for my entire life. I'm absolutely clueless about law, but wouldn't you be better off getting a law degree while getting EE skills and general knowledge on the side if you're going to be a lawyer? As far as I know virtually all lawyers, even heavily specialized ones, only have a law degree. I'm not saying that getting another degree beforehand is pointless, but maybe you don't actually need it to work as a lawyer.

Invest in Nem. Can't do much wrong with that. It's already too expensive for you to buy a shitton and get rich quick but still at an affordable price to make some money.

I don't have time to explain in depth because I should actually be studying for an exam I've got tomorrow morning, but basically: Engineering Degree = more immediate field knowledge = better hiring prospects and higher initial pay.
Additionally, I might end up hating Law School, but I know that I really enjoy engineering so if I decide all I want is an EE degree, I can just call it good and find a good, high-paying job much easier than if I had just done pre-law studies.
On top of all of this, I've been self-studying Japanese for the past year or so and I'm taking the N2 in five days. I hope to take the N1 next year. Being able to do whatever you're trained to do in two languages is an automatic boost to your salary, so long as you find a job that utilizes it, i.e. project management for a company like Sony that has separate design departments for Japan and America and needs the two of them to be able to collaborate as seamlessly as possible.

Yes, but I mean buying in the millions so that you're instantly rich once it hits a certain price.

Nem is currently pretty undervalued since no one ever talks about them but their project is advancing steadily. Compared to last year they had a 5000% increase in price and 35000% increase in daily volume which puts them 1st and 2nd respectively. And 2018 is actually their big year with Catapult, their own exchange, Dimcoin/Comsa and a bunch of other shit in the pipeline. It's bound to hit at least $1 within the next year. I except it to be higher though.

I don't really blog but here's some fun fact I learned from locals

I made friends with some drunk ojiisan and the master(owner) at a sushiya, and they told me that these monkeys at Kinugawa weren't Japanese monkeys, but Taiwanese monkeys(they had a long tail, Japanese monkeys have short tail like a rabbit).
Apparently some of these monkeys go rogue and start terrorizing the local ryokan and onsen. Like 10-20 years ago there were about 100 monkeys going apeshit everywhere, and some villagers like the master at the sushiya bought guns(assuming bolt-action rifle, didn't ask but I doubt they'd use a shotgun) and hunted these monkeys down. Now there's only 20-ish rogue monkeys out there and rest of them lives in a pretty sizable caged area in the mountains.

I kinda feel bad for the monkeys but it can't be helped. But after seeing some social hierarchy shit happening with the monkeys in the cage, this story felt like something out of Planet of the Apes franchise

Hell yeah comfy level is on LIMIT BREAK right now, and as a bonus I haven't even seen a single foreign tourists. It's just been inaka people on their trips with their small company's coworkers, and they were pretty chatty too

I'm just drying some laundry but I'll head out in a bit, expect to see me around 塔のへつり and 大内宿. Going to Aizu Wakamatsu afterwards.

I don't think so, that's just a lightbulb. This is a view of the other direction(standing on the bench) from the same place, and there's a pole that's about the same height. Na, the dome looks right to be the camera.

That's a common fitting for cameras, looking at the view from the camera it doesn't appear to be much higher than the light fitting on the pole in your photo there and the view area seems to be correct for that vantage point.

Sorry guys, no pictures form Wakamatsu station. To be honest it's not that awesome

>>18063644
Sorry didn't end up seeing it, but I ended up hearing some interesting stuff about 白虎隊, apparently when they reconstructed the nearby castle they showcased their swords, and it was like stolen right away. They still haven't been found
The Ojii-san was super mad that the tour guides at the castle didn't know that this ever happened. But it was like 50 years ago lol

>>18059748
So anyways, the guy did show me around aizu and the castle. And he wanted to take me to Aizu-Tajima because it was 'closer'(must've been that way 40-50 years ago when he left Aizu because it definitely wasn't faster by train). Anyways we also got lost on the mountain and shit so I ended up taking the last trains to Tokyo.

The really hilarious part starts here, so I fell asleep in the train from Tajima and missed the last train for transfer towards Tokyo. Luckily the conductors were kind enough to take me back to the Kinugawa Onsen station(the place I was at like 3 days ago).
When I visited before, I asked for a recommendation for a gift to another drunk ojii-san that I met at a sushiya, and he recommended a sake named 男の友情(Literal TL: 'Man's friendship', Liberal TL: 'Broship,' 'Bro code'), and I was going to buy it on the way back to Tokyo. But yesterday I was going to just go straight back to Tokyo ignoring Kinugawa, but I just fucking knocked out in the train despite setting up a phone alarm and such.

So I've been telling the train conductors and people I've met in Kinugawa Onsen that '男の友情を裏切ろうとしたから罰が当たった’
Fucking el oh el

From some people i have talked to that are into IT security/hacking you can get away with pretty much anything in Japan if you just look the part, I bet no one would even question it if 2 guys in workers overalls turned up and started putting up a camera.
And once it's there no one would dare remove it unless they have it 100% on paper that it is to be removed out of fear of triggering the wrath of someone higher up the food chain that could possibly have had it installed without notifying others.

The problem would be as you say, infrastructure and getting the feed to a reliable host.

That's for ffmpeg. I don't use that application so I can't help you there.

What I do is have ffmpeg extract the frames and then compile them into a timelapse using ffmpeg afterward.

This extracts the frames:
ffmpeg -i "rtmpt://114.160.7.45/livepkgr/live-cam003 live=1" -f image2 -vf fps=1 "%%06d.png"

Then you take those and convert them to webm with:
ffmpeg.exe -r 24 -f image2 -i "%%06d.png" -c:v libvpx -crf 45 -b:v 2M -pix_fmt yuv420p -an -sn "timelapse.webm"

Snowless christmas in Tokyo it seems

Snow is really uncommon in Tokyo.

If they get it then its usually in January or February.

I wasn't expecting wind strong enough to blow random shit in my face though.

That's a pity. I was hoping to practice making a timelapse before the New Year shrine visits, but this all seems over my head.

It's in the OP:
湯野上温泉駅 Yunokami-Onsen Station:

Recommend MPC-HC, vlc likes to spazz out on that stream.
