I've been watching Anizatsudan lately. It's a show with Eriko Matsui and Rei Matsuzaki where they talk about anime they like. They've been getting a lot of guest seiyuu and they often talk about how they started to pursue a career in voice acting. Fun little show if you want to learn where they came from. Also, they all go wearing sleepwear.
It's on AbemaTV, so you'll need a proxy to access, but they have a few episodes up on AbemaTV's youtube account. This week's guest was Ai Kakuma.

The ones I remember better are Chiaking's, who got into voice acting because she got bullied in school for being fat, kind of dumb and having a weird voice, Haruko Momoi, who got scouted via email, and Atsumi Tanezaki, who got interested in voice acting because of Sailor Moon, then went to Tokyo to try to become a seiyuu but ended up getting a job in something else due to being a poorfag and only remembered her dream of becoming a seiyuu while riding the train one day. Ai Kakuma worked as an OL for a while before remembering that her dream was to voice act too.
For other interesting stuff, there's Amina Satou talking about how she joined AKB and how she's the happiest she's ever been since becoming a VA, Matsuzaki feeling her age when Yumiri Hanamori was a guest, Yui Watanabe revealing that she got turned into a fujoshi because her friend's sister gave them some HxH doujin, Yurika Endou and Lynn talking about their respective high school lives and Haruka Yoshimura talking about her rather bizarre life in the recent Halloween special. Megumi Ogata was a guest once, but I don't remember much about the episode except for her talking about the differences in how Japan and the west treated Sailor Uranus and Neptune's relationship. Oh, and the karaoke episodes were rather nice.

Because I've read the story before, Kuma-chan had to work to help support the family until her siblings finished growing up and they could afford for her to go off to seiyuu training. You're assuming Junichi Sato isn't one of the reasons I was going to watch it. In general summer is a season where I don't manage to watch shit all in real time, that season I only managed two shows that weren't sequels (and I remember being like 7 episodes behind on one of those sequels besides) Amanchu went from "I'll watch it" to "I'll catch up later" to "nobody seems to have cared about this so I guess I didn't miss anything". I still need to watch at least Momokuri and Macross Delta from that season too.

I wanted to check out the Amanchu anime but I wasn't too crazy about the seiyuu choices.
Looking forward to Hakumei to Mikochi though.

When it comes to the casting of voice actors by us sound directors, I think that many people are misunderstood, thinking that we ‘choose the candidate who is the best actor’. Of course, acting skills are important. But to tell the truth, what matters more than acting skills is whether ‘this [choice of] actor can entertain the audience that the anime in question is targeting’. As each series targets a different audience, the skills required for each work too, changes.

For example, if we have a series that revolves around cute bishōjo characters, we’d then focus on males as the target audience. That means a cast of young, cute girls would correspond to the demands of the consumers. If they’re young and cute then [the consumer] would like to meet them at events. It’s becoming more important to be able to sing and dance, as well as having speaking skills to host Nico live streams and radio shows, areas where a lot more work opportunities are popping up. In such cases, no matter how good one’s acting may be, we’d never be able to hire actors if they couldn’t speak well on radio or during events. On the other hand, we may also have productions featuring wide-ranging storylines and highly dramatic values where the request is to ‘immerse [the viewer] in the story – regardless of name value, [we] want actors with great skills’. In such cases we make our selections without considering whether or not seiyuu fans have heard of their names, or we might choose actors from the dubbing field or stage actors. The point here is that it depends on the series at hand, and the viewers involved.
