I can see why Alice would be smiling with Marisa at her side, but Marisa prefers to stay far away from that annoying stalker as possible, so she probably has thought of some master plan to make her even more of a loner that she already is.

Marisa didn't even recognize Alice when they meet at PCB. Thats not what you call a friend. I know they team up in IN and SA, but they don't seem to be that friendly to each other.

Take what you want from Alice I say and don't waste time telling people they are wrong. When it comes down to it ZUN contradicts enough of his own stuff without having to worry about fanon interpretations and some fan works come up with very plausible explanations where there are none in canon material.

Being so open to interpretation is one of the better things about the Touhou series. It probably wouldn't have gotten half a far without the fans obsessively creating their own works, creating nearly endless material for anyone interested. ZUN just has to pump out the next batch of fucked up character designs with awesome theme music for his latest game and then the fans will do the rest. Look at Utsuho, a fucking tea cosy on one of her feet. I almost get the impression he's just trolling fans now to see if they can make every random thought he comes up with actually look good in fanart.

Personally I find canon Alice to be more interesting then shy lovestruck Alice. She's a independent youkai who isn't actually really all that dangerous to humans and even allows them to stay at her place when caught in the forest overnight. It amuses me her obsession with dolls combined with her lack of interest in most people makes her really creepy to most humans as the house is full of dolls doing chores while Alice herself will quietly keep to herself offering no conversation. I like her arrogance in holding back and fighting at what she sees as her opponents strengths, often causing her to lose and I like how she's not really a shy girl so much as enjoys her peace to research alone. She's proven more then capable of going out and socialising with others when there is a call for it. The way she describes her interest in hanging out with Marisa and Reimu to Suika was pretty neat too, like a strong respect for their strength despite being human.

On a slightly related note, I was amused when it was pointed out that Reisen freaks the villagers out with her seemingly creepy nature. She sells drugs at the village occasionally but having a direct conversation with her is hard because she has strange effects on her voice, like being able to hear it as though she were whispering in your ear regardless of distance, not even beginning the mention the eyes.

It's a nice dimension to a character which is otherwise quite sweet when around her own group or even other Youkai.
