thank you!

I've studied about English, and now I especially study about English preposition AT.

In English, it is used to express a kind of membership like "I'm at Oxford."

but when someone says"I'm in Oxford," it means he is in a city called Oxford.

Are there other examples like this?
examples, "at + name of a city"?
I can't find any other examples exept to mean membership of university.

sorry about my bad english.

I'm looking for some good pictures of little girls.

"At" doesn't always express membership. "I'm at Oxford" can also be interpreted as location, depending on context.

Where is loli?
- Loli is at the pool.
- Loli is in the pool.
Both are expressing location, but the difference is specificity. "At" is more general and therefore is more often used if the listener is far from the location.

While "at" can imply membership, "in" can also imply time:
Where is loli?
- Loli is at school.
- Loli is in class.

Both can also be used figuratively:
- Loli is at play.

English is not my native language, but it seems like prepositions can only be used well through habitual learning.

Using them to describe locations (or time) are already easier to understand, e.g.
In - "To be contained by a box"
At - "To be 'pinpoint-able' on a map/flat surface"
But they are difficult to comprehend when dealing with concepts. Not even grammar books can fully explain their abstract usage.

A Japanese person so good at English wouldn't make a fundamental mistake like this. "I'm at Oxford" in that context would mean "I'm (a student) at (the University of) Oxford.", it is a shortened.

This is less a problem of 'at' and more a problem of shorthand. I'm not sure how such usage came about.

Most people disregard the rules regarding the use of "a" and "an," in so that they merely assume "a" goes with words beginning with a consonant and "an" goes with words beginning with a vowel.

Which isn't true. It actually has to do with the first syllabic sound, and whether that sound is a consonant or vowel sound.

However, few people care that much to worry.

Durr, slow. But regarding the "location" use, I'll make it clearer if OP still cares:

"At" and "in" are also used according to scale: "at" for something with clearly defined limits/borders (which you can stand next to), "in" for something without (which you can't stand "next" to but ar either in or out of).

In practice, it is difficult to imagine where the exact boundary of a city is, therefore the more figurative "in" is used. But as you move down in scale to smaller locations, boundary is more easily defined and it becomes more customary to use the more precise "at".

- The loli is in Japan.
- The loli is in Tokyo.
- The loli is in Shibuya.
- The loli is in/at Shibuya-eki.
- The loli is in/at Shibuya crossing.
- The loli is at the Hachiko statue.

If you can find examples of names/nouns that traditionally refer to large scale areas but are also used to idenfity a specific location, then you can also switch between at/in to imply which you're talking about.

"In" defines a thing with a clear boundary in which you can be contained. "At" defines an approximate point which you are near the object relationally. "At" is also used for "open spaces."

You can be "in a building" but not "in a park," unless the park is underground or enclosed. You can be "at a stadium" but not "in a stadium," unless you're specifically inside the stadium structure itself, and not on the field or in the bleachers.

It's a nuance which defines location very subtly.

If you said "I'm in the Statue of Liberty," you would mean you're inside of it. If you said "I'm at the Statue of Liberty," you would most likely mean you're at the location of it, not necessarily inside of it.

>-Loli is at the house (if you are far from the house)
It implies that the loli is locationally adjacent to the house in some respect, or can be used conversationally to imply that a person is "at home," in other words, available at the domicile.

>-Loli is in the house (if you're closer, or in the house yourself)
Quite literally, the loli would have to be inside the house, and not possibly adjacent to it. Once you enter the house, you are contained within the boundary of it.

>-Loli is in her room.
This is more difficult, but the only thing you can say is that you can't be "at" the room, unless you've arrived at it. It's hard to use the term "at" when you should be using the term "near" to define an approximate adjacency. Mostly, because "at" is used for an approximation in an open space, but you're talking about being near an enclosed space inside an enclosed space. But you can also say you're "at the fridge" if you're talking to someone on the phone.

So just go with what sounds more natural.

>-Loli is in bed.
The loli is quite literally enclosed by the boundaries of the bed, implying that she is wrapped up in the sheets of the bed. "The loli is in bed" also implies sleep.

If you dictated another scenario using bed, you'd most likely use a verb. "She's sitting on the bed" or "she's lying on the bed" would work.

Good call, I guess I missed a clarification. It should the scale of the location relative to the scale of the human. House/room/bed have definable limits but the scale is still bigger than the human (such that the loli is able to occupy the space within it).

Maybe a more direct way to distinguish at/in is "beside/standing next to" versus "inside/located within".

- The loli is at her bed. (standing next to)
- The loli is in her bed. (located within)
- The loli is at her room. (standing next to, perhaps waiting)

"Standing next to/Located within" should be able to work in the opposite direction.

"IN" - Usually refers actually being in a building/country/object/bed/pussy.

"AT" - Is often synonymous with "in", except for a few circumstances where "at" is preferred, e.g:

Place of work: I work at Tescos
Being at a specific location: I am at the point of no return

The trick about the use of "at" is the association between objects. We're using "in" as the example, so I'll continue with that.

"At" is a proposition used to define generic location almost exclusively. 'At the barber shop.' 'At the store.' 'At home.' The specifics of your position (in a chair at the barber shop, or down the street so many meters from the barber shop) is not important. You can be standing outside or in some location vaguely associated with the barber shop and still be 'at' it.

"In" may sound like a preposition of location but it is actually a preposition of INCLUSION. You are building a specific associated relationship between you and then object in which you are relying on it or are encompassed by it. For example, you could say 'in the barber shop' to associate yourself inside the store or you can say you are 'in a chair at the barber shop' which associates you with a chair of the barber shop (inside the shop or outside of it).

The inclusion of "in," by the way, must either be literal or designated. For a more appropriate example: 'I am at the corner of the street.' You do not say you are 'in the corner of the street' because the corner is considered a location association, not an inclusive association. Meanwhile, 'The answer is in the corner' may mean that the answer is either literally INSIDE the corner (start digging ...) or that it involves the concept of the corner.

But, as someone had said before, English is about a-third 'how things work correctly', a-third 'what things sounds good', and a-third 'ah, fudge it.'
