Alright, I'm going to give you the best help you can get. No offence, but /jp/ is usually horrible with advice (they either think you're trolling or would rather talk about their waifus).

Learning Japanese, or any other language, is possible with self-study. Just make sure to start talking with people once you get a grasp of it or you'll never be fluent. Proof: countless people who took a language in school yet can't even hold a casual conversation.

The number one guide you should get is Barry Farber's How to Learn Any Language:

No, this won't teach you Japanese, but it will teach you how to teach yourself Japanese. In a nutshell, the book tells you to use EVERYTHING AT YOUR DISPOSAL! Read this book in its entirety before diving into language self-study.

Get Rosetta Stone. But don't just use Rosetta Stone alone. Get Pimsleur's Japanese mp3/tape/CD off the internets. But don't just use that, either. Get a Japanese grammar book or find some free Japanese grammar lessons online. But don't just use that, either. Find some kind of extensive Japanese-English-Japanese dictionary. Download anime and manga. Find articles in Japanese. Get flash cards, real ones and a flash card app for your computer. Get My Japanese Coach. Thank God for Japanophiles and Japan's crazy export of culture, because you may be able to find everything you need on the internet without paying a cent.

Note that you HAVE to set time aside. You can't really expect to learn Japanese spending an hour a week studying it.

Rosetta Stone is shit. I downloaded it and promptly deleted it.

Buy/Download the Genki books. I'd suggest buying the book and downloading the audio CDs, but if you don't mind ebooks, you can download it in PDF.

The Pimsleur audio CDs are pretty good too from what I've heard, so you could download those too.

Normally I don't reply to these threads, but I really hate Rosetta Stone.

Pimsleur audio CDs are pretty sweet. They are organized into ~25 minute long lessons. Listen to one every night before you go to sleep. Eventually you will start to be able to pick up spoken Japanese. Doesn' t help at all with moon runes because its only audio though.

Rosetta Stone is complete rubbish.

Pimsleur CDs are like a hot spike of Japanese into the brain pan. BUT YOU HAVE TO FOLLOW THE DIRECTIONS!!! If you do it right, you'll be dreaming in Japanese in about 2 weeks.. Although it'll just be random words if you're anything like me.
