What keeps you coming back to Touhou after years and years? Or any Japanese franchise for that matter.

Like, I'm personally invested in the world of Gensokyo as a whole and generally enjoy what goes on in it, but I know there are people who exclusively dig the music, or like to play writefag with the setting, or are just into the porn. And though ZUN does continue to make new shit, it's still quite the old series. So how about you? What keeps you caring?

The lore and characters are intriguing enough for me to stay, and since it's an ongoing series that I've been following for years I have obligation to see how it ends, as long as nothing hugely disappoint me. Oh, and the music are amazing as always. Fan contents is also a huge bonus.

I don't even play the games, I just like the music, character designs, and "fan canon" in the doujinshi. Whether it's H or not, I'm just amazed by how fans have managed to flesh out all these characters that officially only say a few lines in their boss fights. Touhou is a really fascinating work because of that.

Though I don't really have an "obsession" with Touhou or any other Japanese media franchises except maybe Eva, though that's because I think the original TV series is legitimately a masterpiece and I love the characters. Touhou is more just a longstanding attraction than a real "romance".

That one doujin where adult Cirno plays the role of a loving mother for a group of half-youkai boys who get reverse-raped by the inhabitants of the SDM.

Except that's not remotely true?

This is kind of like reading the bio on a Star Trek action figure, then reading a fanfic and being amazed by how creative action figure fans are for coming up with transporters and warp drive.

Even Flandre (the #1 meme character) has had two game appearances, a lengthy bio, articles on her by Akyuu and Marisa, an interview with Aya, cameos and references in various manga, an entry in Strange Creators of Outer World, and multiple interviews where ZUN has talked about her.

The Best touhou is Eirin. She deserves her own TPS spinoff where you get to shoot some dudes, maybe in conjunction with Raisin.
