japanese retro games

>> No.17742257

Can /jp/ explain to me why retro game inflation/'hipster tax' isn't a thing in Japan?

Why can I grab something like Kirby's Dream Land 3 in near-pristine condition with box + manual for $30 on eBay from Japan while a loose cart in awful condition from the US easily fetches $80+?

For whatever reason, there's more stock. Maybe Jappos take better care of their videogames.

Because you use Ebay. Data isn't worth shit. Near the end of the times old carts were still being sold in stores they were basically being given away.

This is true of clothing, so I don't see why not for this. I went to a fashion thrift store when I was there last and everything was practically new. Versus here where it looks like it's been worn by a homeless person.

i don't buy retro games. I play them on my raspberry pi(recalbox).

paying 30 dollars for a old game makes you a retard. that's probably more than the average modern day game you can get for like 15-20 dollars

That's a really fun game. I play it on an SNES emulator from time to time. Very cute too.

Yet it's cheaper than when those games came out and they cost like $50 in a time when $50 was worth more.

Honestly games are ultra cheap nowadays for the amount of effort put into them. Some no effort bullshit in 8 or 16 bit era woudl put you back like $90 in today equivalent

That's just a consequence of the fact that the market for games is much higher than it was back then. They were still a relatively niche product back then.

"hipster tax" is definitely a thing, apart from the obvious rarities always being stupid high and their being more of them due to response campaigns and stuff the price of common games has gone up by a few multiples in the past decade. it just started from a lower base.

>> No.17754908

>>17742257
What you call "hipster tax" exists everywhere, in Japanese retrogaming stores it's called "premium value". It just applies to different titles than what you're used to see.
For example:

Well, paying for a raspberry pi for the purpose of emulation is also kind of retarded, just use your PC.
I like emulation, I use it, but it will never be the same as the real hardware, as close as it might get.
Also, not everyone is a "collector", many people just kept their childhood collections because they genuinely like them, and not to "cling to plastic" or whatever.
If you aren't a poorfag, you don't need to sell them.
Also, your post had nothing to do with the post you replied to, it was completely unrelated.
However, where can I subscribe to your blog? I want tips for setting up my raspberry on my HD TV to play SD games! Just kidding.

Collecting isn't a big fad in Japan. There are collectors, but they're a minority, and a lot of people buy the games to play, then resell them again to the stores (usually for less than what they paid for, allowing the stores to keep the same price for the game).
This is starting to change though, in the past 5 years or so, Japan has been being flocked by westerners going into akiba and other places with used retro games and buying en masse, taking them out of Japan, so we might see a raise in price as the supply decreases, but I think compared to the west Japan will still keep being more affordable.
The actual rare games in Japan are expensive as shit though.

I will often times buy bulk in Japan, come to the U.S and sell it sometimes for 10 food what I bought it for. What i should start doing is bringing old toysbto Japan, sell there, and then buy in Japan, bring back, sell again.

I'm interested in starting a studio that translates and digitilizes old games that were not released outside of Japan but have a fan base and have copy rites to selling them on PSN & Nintendo system online.

Just take this game for example. It was originally released on Sega Game Gear and became popular enough to receive a reboot that made it onto Sega Saturn with video animation. Fans world wide like myself drool over the idea of it being released hard copy some how.
