Kanji aren't basic characters. Kanji encode morphemes. If you want to compare to letters you have to forget how to write component graphemes.

There are three orthographic units here. Rome, a word, roman, a form of that word, and esque, a suffix morpheme. Forgetting how to spell esque is not like putting the wrong kanji in the wrong place, it's like forgetting which components go where in 様. That is something that is entirely possible for the typical highschooler to do in both languages. That doesn't mean they can't read words using these.

HJGP is basically a more modern less bloated DoJG. It contains more explanatory information and makes it easier to find. DoJG is also split up into three volumes for no reason but to cost more if you acquire it legally.

I've been contemplating making a deck of all the sentences in it, but the gargantuan nature of the task has put me off doing it so far. There are 13 example sentences on the first page alone, and I dread to imagine just how many there are in the entire book. Even taking a conservative estimate of 6 sentences per page, that's more than 4000 in total, and every single one of them has to be manually typed out and then carefully re-read a few times to check for errors.

Not him, but I read Flyable Heart as my first VN and I mined 2178 new words and 164 new kanji (I had done RTK beforehand, so that's 164 that weren't in RTK or the 2.5k~ words of Core I did). Okay, had a little play around with getting the Anki import thingy setup for Yomichan and I got it working without much trouble. Think I will give mining a shot from tomorrow and see how I get on with it, but if it starts becoming a source of procrastination then I'll most likely stop and go back to just reading.

I'll probably go pretty steady with Anki and just do 10 new cards a day. It's from 人形の国, apparently it is supposed to be set in the same universe as knights of sidonia but I'm not familiar with that series so I can't say. Is it possible to convert a PDF format book that has furigana to an HTML file that retains the furigana? Tried calibre with default settings and the furigana weren't properly tagged and were on their own lines not positioned or tagged properly. I'm reading something in PDF format and Yomichan isn't playing nice with it if the word isn't the first word or two of a line.

It's mostly just a minor inconvenience since I can just copy the text from the PDF to a different tab to look up, but still would be nice if I could just convert it to HTML.

Made it to 300 words after about 5 hours of reading.

Experience: Mining made me pay more attention to individual words and the kanji used to write them, but as a result of dividing my attention I was less focused on the actual sentences and was noticeably worse at reading than usual. I also found reading considerably less fun this way.

Realistically, how long would it take me to get to N2 level, how daily hours would I have to dedicate?

I'm certain I could pass the N5 test. I know both Kanas, and the basic Kanji and Grammar.

2 1/2 years, at 1 hour a day
Probably less, but I passed N2 with 172/180 at that point (the test is only held once per year hear, and 1 1/2 years definitely wasn't enough). I passed N1 the year after that.

I'm reading fantasy LNs, and there are a bunch of towns/countries called [random Katakana]町 / 国
How are those names pronounced?
まち / くに or ちょう / こく

国 is usually こく in my experience

But 町 can be both I think. Case in point, these two towns with the same name but one is pronounced ちょう and the other まち:
