So I'm planning to get a larger display. However, as most VNs are 4:3, I'm wondering how this would work out. Do any of you play VNs on a 16:9 display? Do you get shitty scaling if you play in fullscreen mode?

>> No.1769093

depends on how shitty the display, drivers, and video card are

>> No.1769097

Depends on the VN. I can't fullscreen Princess Waltz without it getting horizontally distorted to fuck. FS/N works fine though.

>> No.1769106

All ATI/nVidia drivers have a ratio-keeping scaling option. Unless your graphics card is as old as fuck.

>> No.1769115

I just play them in window mode.

Is it readable? I mean, with a huge resolution like 1920x1080, wouldn't a 800x600 or 640x480 window be really small?

>> No.1769145

You need to make sure your graphics card is new enough.
A HD4850 or better should be good enough to run VNs at 16:9.

I have 15.4 1680x1050 display. Window mode, and can't say I've ever noticed any problems when it comes to readability.

Depends on how large your display is and how far away you sit from it, duh. If you're sitting a mile away, the quality loss from upscaling wouldn't be noticable. If you're close to the screen, window mode is easily big enough.

tl;dr try it, YMMV anyway

Get a 4:3 instead. They're superior for general browsing and working, and for playing VN. So unless you spend the majority of your time on the computer watching widescreen video or movies, you should go with the 4:3.

is what I use, it's pretty good for VNs. It's a 5:4, but that's not too much difference.

This is what I thought first as well, but I'm looking for a >=22" (or 21.5") display, and none of them seems to be 4:3 or 5:4

>> No.1769300

>>1769267
That's not really true, 16:10 displays are perfectly fine for working, browsing, etc. Just get away from the notion that you run every app maximized, and make sure that your display is as high as you want it to be - in the very worst case, you'll end up with some horizontal space you won't use much.

>> No.1769302

>>1769267
4:3 is so 1990.
>>1769088
Why would you want to play in fullscreen mode? Most VN's only support low resolution anyways.

>> No.1769333

>>1769300
Why would you want to end up with space that isn't used? It's a waste of energy and money.
>>1769298
If you're going to do that, I do remember someone in /g/ saying something once about the pixels in 22" monitor hardware being stretched when they aren't in 23" monitors, or it might have been that they were stretched in 21" compare 22". But there's something along those lines.

I'm not sure in general, as I have a 4:3 monitor, but most VN tend to just take their 640x480 section and black everything else out in full screen mode. Of the few which actually take the whole screen, I have no idea what they do on a widescreen.

How I wish someone would make a 23" 4:3 monitor. That would be so awesome, I wouldn't mind paying a premium for it.

Normally, 2D apps don't care about aspect ratio at all. It's the business of the graphics card (driver) to deal with resolutions. Normally, you just have to check a "keep aspect ratio" checkbox in your advanced graphics settings, and you get fullscreen with pillarboxes.

The only VN I know that is actually widescreen (MuvLuv Alternative) still runs in a 4:3 window and adds its own letterbox.

22" monitors generally run at the same resolution as 20" monitors so although the screen is larger there is no increase in quality. There are 16:9 21.5" and 23" monitors that use true 1080p.

A 19" 5:4 1280x 1024 is a great option for real work and internet browsing. For media and games wide screen is generally better but not by much. Lately wide screen monitors sold in 16:9 vs 16:10 have even more of an issue with a lack of vertical space.

My advice would be to get a 23" or 24" wide screen or at least a 22". 19" wide screen is not worth it and if you saw a bunch of them lined up I'm sure you would agree.

>> No.1769653

Wide monitors are acceptable, if, and only if, they can be rotated.

>> No.1771297

Why do you play VN in fullscreen?

Windowed mode is the way to go. You wouldn't be able to browse /jp/ at the same time if you are playing in fullscreen mode right.

I dunno if that’s the best idea anymore.
The market is changing.

Studio Mebius’s most recent release, SIN, runs at 1280x720.

Light’s upcoming game, Tapestry, supports up to 1920x1125 with various trimming and scaling options.

Cross Days, the next School Days game, is 800x450 and supports wide displays (up from whatever the heck letterbox-inside-a-640x480-square resolution School Days/Summer Days used)

22" 1680x1050 16:10 here...

Since I run it off a GLORIOUS MACBOOK PRO, COMMRAD! I wind up using two screens when doing stuff.

If anything I would love to find out how to add black bars to the sides when playing VNs.
I know it can happen since a friend of mine had it running at 4:3 ratio on his 16:10 laptop...

Oh, and ib4 Macfag. I got it (along with the two others) because they're silent and I can leave them on downloading stuff without anyone noticing.

>> No.1772338

My 16:9 monitor just automatically preserves the aspect ratio by default. 4:3 stuff has black bars on the sides.

I hear you can get screwed with laptops, though.

it depends entirely on the monitor itself. Some monitors are able to (and default to) displaying things at their native resolutions, more often they default to stretch to fit and aren't easily changed to the former.

>> No.1772376

>>1772338
I've had laptops that preserved native resolutions.

The problem is that a lot of times when they don't, it's really hard or impossible to change the setting. Even if it exists, it often doesn't actually work.

>> No.1772383

>>1772316
It's usually a setting you can configure in your video card's configuration program.

With my nVidia card there was a choice for fullscreen stretch settings that included (1)stretch to fit the screen, (2)stretch, but maintain aspect ratio, and (3)do not stretch. Try putzing around in whatever the mac's equivalent to the windows control panel is.

I'm running XP on that since it's easier to reload a fresh install in case XP get's mucked up (yay Winclone!)

So, yeah... gonna dig in the ATI control panel next time I boot in to XP.

As thanks, have a recycled Kaguya w/ laptop.

Get a 16:10 24" 1920x1200. You can enjoy your VNs as 4:3 if you use the correct scaling options for your drivers(NVIDIA cards certainly have them), and you can enjoy your 16:9 animu and movies in full screen, if you watch that.
