>So, do ALL creatures that humanity stop believing in drop by in Gensokyo
Yes they do.

We've seen this happen in various cases in the official side materials where there have been one or two cases of extinct species appearing in Gensokyo I think a type of Cicada in CoLA and there was another one I forget where about a type of bird.

It goes as far as to material objects with the influx of dead Tablets/Smartphones showing up. I'm pretty sure there were some official stories too where Yukari ended up buying a Ipod and even a Gameboy off Rinnosuke.

>or there are some sort of area restrictions?
Probably not since Hecatia is a foreign deity (though has a pretty primodial link) Seiga Kaku is Chinese and you have the Scarlet Mansion who are foreign youkai. It's official in the canon Remi first language is English, probably multi-lingual and Japanese is a secondary language for her. There are hints of it as she misses the point of some Japanese customs a lot of the time.

>>17617473
Summoning gods is more like a class ability in that all shrine maidens can do it.

Reimu just happens to be a really shit Shrine Maiden who can't hear the voice of her own god and forgets how to summon except the times Yukari and Kasen smacked it back into her.

On paper Reimu's official personal ability is the vague 'to float away'. That is she becomes intangible to everything, she'd just float away from everything physically and spiritually into a higher dimension, basically it's the ability to ignore all borders.

It was implied way back in IN it's probably been sealed but you still see glimpses of it sometimes when Reimu teleports or her uncanny ability to smash barriers. It's basically the polar opposite of Yukari's ability to manipulate borders and gaps and Reimu simply ignores them.

Reimu's other personal abilities have always been her stupidly godly physical reflexes and intuition/instincts.

The original aspect of what would become Gensokyo created in the 1600s is what draws supernatural things into Gensokyo. It's specified there are no region limits.

>By establishing Gensokyo as an illusionary world, and the outside as the real world, the youkai weakened by the outside world would naturally flock to Gensokyo; this was a truly epochal event. With this, it ended up that even youkai from outside of Japan immigrated to Gensokyo.

Though ZUN I think has said there might be other Gensokyo-like lands out there. Then there are areas that are not part of Gensokyo and are their own thing, like >>17617417 said.

It's often specified as PC-98, Windows 1 (EoSD-IN or StB), 2 (MoF-HM), 3 (DDC-???) and so on. Squeezed in EoSD-StB was the Bougetsushou series...IN and related content like Silent Sinner and other stuff, which was a major part of Touhou creatively.

Windows 1 is more standalone than 2. Plots are independent of each other, with games merely sharing characters as playables.

Meanwhile in 2, characterized as the Religous War arc, you also have something linking one game to the next. You had the arrival of Kanako which led to SA which led to UFO which led TD which led to HM.

Windows 3 is iffier, but I personally characterize it as an attempted return to nostalgic plot and some gameplay elements (after UFO and TD) of the "old" Touhou. A youkai driven plot in DDC, the return of Bougetsushou arc in LoLK, and finally HSiFS which revealed some inner workings of Gensokyo like in PCB.

>> No.17618014

>>17617407
No, this was discussed in the last thread as well. ULiL confirms that belief is not enough to create a youkai on its own, which is why the urban legends required the occult orbs to exist, so clearly not every fantasy concept would even exist in the first place. As well, everything seen in Gensokyo is either a native concept, or explicitly from another place. The SDM and vampires in general arrived in Gensokyo in the 90s, long after they would have appeared if every fantasy concept was drawn to the place. Hecate and CP, Junko, and Seiga, are all clearly foreign, but all have explanations for why they are in Gensokyo. In fact, we have a canon example of foreign creatures being imported from elsewhere, in the hobgoblins that eventually settled in the SDM. The only exception to this is the Chupacabra, but one exception certainly doesn't disprove the general rule.
So no, Heracles wouldn't appear in Gensokyo for no good reason, and you won't see colonies of elves, or jötunn, and you probably won't see the Æsir emerge to reclaim Odin's spear from Remilia.

Though, that said, creatures can show up in Gensokyo whether or not they're supernatural. As the other anon alluded to, crested ibis began to appear in Gensokyo in large numbers when they became endangered in the outside world. As a general rule of thumb, things that exist in Japan that are forgotten, either literally or metaphorically, end up in Gensokyo.

>> No.17618041

>>17617473
Taking into consideration all canon sources, Reimu's powers seem to stem from her position as Gensokyo's guardian and her connection to the border. Her iconic yin-yang orb seems to act as a catalyst of divine power, though its importance varies depending on how much stock you put into PC98 canon. She innately has the power to float, likely thanks to her position, and this ability allows her to float beyond existence and phase in and out of reality, befitting a girl who guards a realm of fantasy and illusion. After PCB, we start to see Reimu use more border related magics, and various sources seem to imply that Yukari has trained her to some degree in these types of abilities. Her connection to the border likely gives her a natural talent for this sort of magic, though this is never explicitly confirmed in canon. Reimu can also call upon the gods for assistance by performing various miracles, and while she does do this on occasion this is mostly treated as a secondary ability. Finally, Reimu has access to various seals and weapons designed to harm or kill youkai, and has the knowledge required to do things such as seal away ghosts and lock supernatural powers, as she does to Suika at the climax of IaMP to prevent her from following through with her scheme.

Nothing. Hecatia's body doesn't actually change (for reason of hats or anything else). Her power is stated to have 3 bodies at once, not to change her form. The colour coding is merely an aesthetic mean, and the particular orb she keeps in her hat corresponding to the specific body's domain is more akin to a badge of office or a uniform.

Think about it like this: if you took a policeman's badge and stuck it on your clothes, would you become a policeman? Some people may then see you as so, but it's not the badge that makes a policeman. If the Dream World Heca put on something else in her hat, even another orb, she wouldn't stop being the Dream World Heca. But it could certainly confuse the onlookers.

The only real loosely connected 'arcs' so to speak of is the Bougetsushou/Lunarian arc which goes IN->SSiB->CiLR. Plus the Religious War, MoF->UFO->TD->SoPM->Hopeless Masquerade which concludes it.

Everything else is effectively a standalone individual story within the lore of the series.

>>17619181
It's always been the case.

Many Gensokyo events can always be directly mappable to contemporary world events. We even had a direct birth date in the case of Hieda no Akyuu and now we have Sumireko's presence which confirms everything.

Even the Sealing Club Stories which take place far off into the future follow a easily mappable timeline.

I'd also add that there's a "Sagume's fuckups" arc as spurred by Junko and Hecatia's antics. Yukari's scheming/manipulation to create a status quo is a perversion of the desire to let people co-exist freely which is why they don't see eye to eye.

So is the entire Hakurei shrine the boundary? This would mean that the boundary is a 4-dimensional spacetime by which the outer world and Gensoko (both 4-dimensional spacetime manifolds) are glued together to form a 5-dimensional cobordism. However the category of cobordism classes nCob so far are only characterized for n < 4, and unitary TQFTs on nCob are nondegenerate for n = 4, meaning that you can't naively form a sensible physical Yang-Mills theory to describe matter in 4-dimensions. This would basically render the entire boundary project impossible even in principle.
So how did the sages do it? Bypassing this would mean that they (namely Yukari, since I don't think any other sages are smart enough) have to impose new structures on quantum invariants that are sensitive to the exotic differential structures that some boundary 4-manifolds have, while adding too much structure would break the property of topological invariance of what a quantum invariant should have in 5Cob.

For example, what if Yukari brought in a bunch of people from /jp/ that had some fan-wank personality in there heads. If there were enough of them, would it change the original Yukari or create a new one that's lazy, sensitive about her age, promiscuous, etc.

>If youkai are manifestations of people's beliefs
I don't think it's as simple as that. Most people believe Nue to be a sort of chimera, but that's clearly not what Nue looks like. Youkai seem to represent certain aspects of belief, and they are sensitive to it, but it seems more like a situation where they subsist off belief in general, they aren't defined by it.

>If Yukari wants people to start believing in youkai again
She probably realizes that the reveal that youkai exist would do more harm than good for her side, youkai in general can't really exist in a scientific world and they would eventually be phased out again, and she has a lot invested in Gensokyo.

You need to stop posting and just go and read Symposium of Post Mysticism, there was a large discussion on this exact subject in the book which answers everything and far more.

Gensokyan youkai have been liberated to some extent from this old trait that the established ones are able to choose their own forms. They still need faith/fear/spirit to sustain their forms but are no longer bound to the human imagination to dictate their form.

>If Yukari wants people to start believing in youkai again, why doesn't she barge into a UN conference, announce who she is and use her powers to pull off feats science can't explain.

He introduces chatacters this way only sparingly, and typically to flesh out factions that are a little empty (Tewi for Eientei, Momiji for Tengu, and Tojiko for Taoists), but he hasn't had to do that recently, as all featured groups are either intentionally small (DDC, HSiFS), or already vast (LoLK).

He has gone on record admitting Sakuya & Remi as a unit are a blatant nod to Dio Brando to the point Remi even shares one of his famous quotes.

The specific interview you're talking about is from a magazine named Cara*Mel which regularly does interviews with ZUN to coincide with all his game and manga releases. It was a huge 2 part interview to celebrate SA. ZUN mentions Yuugi's star is in tribute to the original Jojo's star birthmark. Even her sake dish gimmick is a tribute to the one fight in Part 1 with Zeppeli & Jojo where they carry a glass of wine without spilling a drop.

You can even see a nod to those interviews in the fandom with that one recent Sound Holic PV where Sakuya is carrying Remi around the place and the Yuugi vs Sakuya fight.

>> No.17670114

>>17669954
Kind of actually, it's a bit interesting because around UFO and even before it we started getting chains of incidents. UFO itself is the result of hell being opened up in SA, which was the result of Kanako's machinations after MoF.

Ten Desires has a bit to do with UFO, as that cunt Byakuren parked her huge boat temple on a graveyard deliberately in an attempt to stop a famous Taoist's resurrection. Hopeless Masquerade was supposed to be the result of Buddhists and Taoists fighting, and the main antagonist Kokoro is the now-sentient creation of Prince Shotoku, but it doesn't have much to do with anything really and is rather self-contained.

Double Dealing Character is, as far as I know, entirely self contained aside from the direct sequel, Impossible Spell Card.

Then we have Urban Legend in Limbo, a chapter of Wild and Horned Hermit implying a whole lot, Legacy of Lunatic Kingdom, an arc of Forbidden Scrollery, ULiL PS4, and possibly Antimony of Common Flowers ALL stemming from the actions of the character Sagume Kishin, who isn't actually introduced until LoLK. She basically created a bunch of magical objects that have been causing trouble in a number of ways since ULiL. She manipulated the high school girl Sumireko Usami to fuck with the Gensokyo barrier and spread around her orbs, she filled Gensokyo with urban legends, she intended to use this to wipe Gensokyo clean and move the Lunar Capital there as a contingency plan (not the actual incident of LoLK, but a result of it), her orbs got severely out of hand and to our knowledge are still an active problem (they could've caused the apocalypse in FS and they were causing miniature incidents and weird "youkai" in WaHH). They seem to have gotten doubly out of hand with AoCF but we don't know entirely what that's about yet.

Despite all this, it seems Hidden Star in Four Seasons, the latest game, was self-contained although there are suggestions that the final boss from it is not done fucking around.

>> No.17670488

>>17669954
You missed a lot then, UFO is kind of the beginning of a point where ZUN started to coalesce multiple bits of lore in the series to form a coherent bigger story/world.

-Ten Desires
Byakuren parks her boat temple on top of the grave of a Buddhist mortal enemy to try prevent the awakening of Toyosatomimi no Miko a Taoist Hermit/Saint but ends up being the trigger for it. Also notable is the introduction of Seiga Kaku one of the few pure evil characters in the series and Mamizou a Bakedanuki who becomes important in the spinoff games and printworks.

-Hopeless Masquerade & Symposium of Post Mysticism
Previous 3 games lead to the religious wars arc with the Buddhists, Taoists, Hakurei, Moriya all competing for Faith which is concluded by this game and fanbook. Also Koishi from SA inadvertedly ends the religious wars by bullying a newly born Tsukomogami youkai named Hata no Kokoro who the factions end up bonding to help.

-Double Dealing Character & Impossible Spell Card
Sort of a standalone game + StB style spinoff which also carries on the Tsukomogami mini arc and introduces Seija Kijin a evil youkai who aims to destroy Gensokyo's order later resulting in everyone turning against and hunting her down.

See >>17670114 for a rough overall gist but after this is the point now Touhou has gotten really interesting as there is now a interconnecting narrative between all the spinoff printworks and main + spinoff games.

Short summaries anyway
-Legacy of Lunatic Kingdom
Pretty huge scale story, Lunarians full scale invade Gensokyo and the protagonists have to team up with Eientei to repel the threat whilst also dealing with a Divine Spirit who is driving the Lunarians to the brink. Also Yukari shows up hinting at something huge happening in future which seems to be the Great Youkai Sages. Game also introduces the strongest Touhou in the entire series.

-Urban Legend in Limbo
Urban Legends start appearing as unstable youkai, leading to a incident with the Gensokyo Barrier coming under threat from the outside world inadvertedly also causing the Lunarian invasion. Also introduces Sumireko the ancestor of Renko from the music collection Sealing Club stories. Also starts the new Great Youkai Sages story thread which is still developing by revealing Kasen from the WaHH manga as one of Yukari's co-creators of Gensokyo.

-HSiFS
Doors appearing all over Gensokyo cause seasons to go out of sync cause turns out to be a primordial god who is revealed as the third Great Youkai Sage who created Gensokyo announcing their return.

>How do I get into the games?
Moriya Shrine is where most people download the games. ZUN is okay with people pirating the games, because it allows it to be more accessible than having to buy one of the original (possibly fake) copies for lots of money online. Most Moriya Shrine downloads have English patches, except for maybe HSiFS.
>Are there rules to magic?
Sort of. Anyone can learn magic, human or youkai, but using magic to ascend to immortality via spells that remove the need for nutrition and homeostasis brings one to youkai status, specifically as a part of the "magician" youkai race. Some people are born into this "magician" youkai race, like Patchy, and some get there using the method I stated earlier, like Alice. Marisa is considered a magician, but not a YOUKAI magician, like Patchy and Alice. Anyone can learn magic via rigorous studying, training, or the use of artifacts

If by magic you meant the innate ability of the characters, it usually comes naturally to youkai, but not to humans. Humans have the potential to be stronger than youkai, but youkai are naturally stronger than the average human. To even the odds, the spellcard rule was established, which is a type of danmaku duel that's fair both to humans and youkai. Danmaku can be literally anything, from giant magical lasers to tiny pebbles thrown by a disgruntled child. The pebbles won't necessarily be powerful or effective, but it still counts. The point is to fight until one side cannot fight anymore without using lethal means.

Alright, it's a full download site.
I tried to use it once before, but got confused by the CMD-like install screen - is there any "for dummies" guide to those?

>Magic
I knew most of that from the CYOA, though it's good to confirm it.
I was mainly wondering about the underpinnings of magic - I remember reading on a wiki that different characters used entirely different elemental systems (and that Patchouli was a "western mage using eastern elements" as opposed to... Marisa, I think?), so it seems like ZUN uses the "magic is the power of belief" over any more unified system. Or am I wrong?

Also, if a human + youkai pairing creates a half-youkai who can both use youkai powers (to some extent) and learn magic, how do Magicians (whose Youkai ability seems to be learning magic) fall? Would a Human + Magician crossbreed be any different than a human magician partway on the path to Youkai-hood? Would a Magician + some other Youkai hybrid be any different than a half-human who later mastered magic?

>Marisa and Patchy
There's no real completely established magic system, since so many magics exist. Patchy uses elemental magic, and Marisa (mainly) uses celestial magic. Both of them probably know many different kinds of a much wide variety of magic, but they just prefer to use those specific kinds of magic in their danmaku. It's not just an elemental system.

>Magicians and Youkai-Human Pairing
Magicians are simply youkai that use magic to gain immortality. We can assume that Patchy's magician status at birth gives her a natural knack for learning magic, but that's just speciation. We can also assume that she was either willed into existence, like many other youkai, or that she is the offspring of two other magician youkai. We don't really know enough about her to tell. As for half-breeds, we know about half-human half-youkai people (Rinnosuke and Youmu, perhaps some others that I'm forgetting), and they have EXTREMELY decreases aging (maybe immortality?) and a minor ability. As for youkai-hybrids, we really have no examples to go off of. It'd probably adhere to how it's handled in Japanese mythology.

Touhou flows 1+1 in real time. It hasn't really become a big deal yet since Reimu/Marisa/Sanae are all plausible to be young women throughout the story (Reimu and Marisa are essentially in their mid-20s now). It really hasn't mattered up to this point and ZUN could always asspull some kind of timeslow if he ever wanted to pull back from time flowing 1:1.

The bigger hurdle is going to be when Akyuu hits the end of her natural lifespan. ZUN has been hinting that she is looking for ways to extend her life but that seemed like something that would have been breached in FS had it not ended abruptly. You'd need electricity and also last I checked he also doesn't have a clue how you'd even hook it up or turn it on.

Which is kind of funny given he is actually quite a gifted magical tool craftsman/specialist enough to make something like Marisa's Mini-Hakkero and I think there was a passing mention somewhere he's also responsible for Yuuka's parasol.

>Sakuya's bullshitting when she tells Reimu that her timestop is just moving really fast in WaHH or FS (I forget which one it was).
It doesn't contradict anything though if her time stop abilities are simply the equivalent of a extremely powerful speed buff/debuff.

The real problem is all the abilities in Touhou have always been made up of half truths/lies depending on how you interpret them.

If you think I even take Akyuu's wild musings into account you're wrong. It's more like how things went in IN (unaffected by the moon's lunacy), how Eirin seems to recognize her, the name Remilia decided to give her, her powers which are extremely unusual for innate human abilities (which thus far have been perception based aside from Reimu, whose abilities are tied with her position as a gatekeeper between worlds), her alleged agelessness, and her frequent mentions of her own "humanity".

By the way, Lunarians are actually humans. They're humans who left for the moon at some point. If Sakuya was indeed one it would explain a lot about her. Not her seeming lack of mortality, however, since impurity would make her normal.

One of the Watatsuki sisters is married to her sister's son. Quote from Eirin in CiLR:

"The two princesses were my distant relatives. To put it in human terms, one was the wife of a grandnephew of mine, while the other was the wife of their son"

Avoiding incest in the lunar capital must be quite hard, Reimu commented on how small and "not busy" it was, just a fraction of the size of Gensokyo.

It's worth noting that Hecatia is impressed by Gensokyo (particularly how its society works), and she's likely been around the block.

>>17700158
The original line is ambiguous enough that it could be read as the Watatsukis' husbands being brothers or cousins or something. However, the mythological Tamayorihime and Toyotamahime had that arrangement, so we can assume that's what Eirin meant.

When it comes to nobility and gods, incest is to be expected.

Ya, you get something called "Parallel Endings" if you 1cc the game while holding 3 or more bombs (which basically requires you to come into stage 6 with extra bombs and then do a NM run because it resets your bomb counter to 2 and you can't get more) after having already cleared it before.

The same person that says Sakuya is immune to the Moon's effects asks her if she is going insane a few lines later. And then there are two other humans who are fine when they fight Kaguya.

And I don't recall Reisen, Eirin or Kaguya recognizing Sakuya. Eirin treats them both as complete strangers. She even calls them kids, when Sakuya would have to be a thousand years old and older than Remilia to have met Eirin before she left the Moon.

Personal reasons for ZUN. He is highly concerned with retaining the full rights and control over any official Touhou works, keeping it "indie". The way the animation industry works, with how much money and how many people are involved, doesn't sit well with him. He could never fund an official anime out of his own pocket, and that means bringing in external financiers who are in it for a return on their investment.

Publishing deals with magazines for the official manga works seems to be as far as he is willing to stretch. He's not only a game programmer, composer, and an amateur artist, he's a decent writer too, with entire novels under his belt. He does all the writing for all the official manga, and stays in constant touch with the artists.

ZUN wanting to remain in control is also one of the stated reasons behind why he won't release his games outside of Japan. He did mention that Steam is a great service which has made it considerably easier to self-publish, but he would still have to rely on others to localize his games. It would also mean him having to devote even more time to publishing, which keeps him occupied a lot of the time already, making it even harder to find time for actually making games.

>unaffected by the moon's lunacy
ZUN drew a picture of Sakuya with red eyes shortly after the release of IN to celebrate 3m hits on his blog. When a fan asked about the eyes he told them to go play the game. That is to say she was indeed affected by the moon.

>how Eirin seems to recognize her
Eirin knows Konohana-sakuyahime. This line was simply allusion to the fact that Eirin is the god Omoikane, and was one of the first real hints.

>her frequent mentions of her own "humanity"
She tends to be quite cold towards people and so is questioned because of this; her affirming she's actually human is basically a running gag at this point.

>Lunarians are actually humans
Lunarians are primordial Shinto gods and their descendants. The Lunar Capital is essentially Takamagahara.

>>17700158
See the above. Eirin is Omoikane; Toyohime and Yorihime are Toyotamahime and Tamayorihime, making this connection exact.
>>17700297
I don't think it was ambiguous, but it was previously translated differently, likely only because the phrase is complicated and it wasn't carefully checked.

You are dense as fuck. Please go read the works, this shit is obvious if you pay attention and are aware of the underlying mythology.

As far as the red eyes thing goes, this is historical. This is an explanation of something that happened in the work freshly after it was released. You can go dig up the information for yourself from forever ago and translate it to realize how dumb you're being, but you won't, because you're only interested in a pet theory and confirmation bias.
