Maybe i'll wait until that R18 patch to buy it so i'm another statistic for that timeframe and hope my drop in the bucket helps keep R18 standard.

Thanks to the split release of Muv Luv Alternative, the initial launch for Kickstarter backers along with the general release show up quite distinctly on the daily concurrent users chart (just charting the highest concurrent users on any individual day). It seems to be off to a relatively strong start on Steam, and unsurprisingly there has been a surge of people playing the original Muv Luv on Steam as well within the last week. Of course, its Steam performance will be complemented by the already huge Kickstarter and the upcoming Vita releases (the ESRB pages of which went up within the past few days).

Aside from that, it will be quite interesting to see how the Steam version of Dies Irae responds to the upcoming airing of the anime beginning next week. The Steam version of Dies Irae has managed to get quite a few people to download the free portion (nearing 55k Steamspy), but it still only lists 12 reviews being from individuals who reviewed it after buying the DLC on Steam.

Be nice if MG gave a statement about this. Even if it is "we can't talk about this at this time" would be enough to show that work is still likely happening behind the scenes after the bankruptcy stuff.

MG is doing most of the work on the official side. Making them go even faster would force them to grow bigger, but I don't think the VN market can quite accomodate that. Or they could go full Sakuragame, but no one wants that.

Sekai has enough licenses that it could release as consistently as MG, but they have to get their shit together. It's pretty unlikely this late in the game though, and since Nutaku doesn't seem like it is subsidizing them anymore, they aren't in a great spot. They might go even slower than they are doing now and outright die off, but I'm probably just being over optimistic.

>Sekai has enough licenses
About that.
Don't you have to pay for licences up front typically? Meaning you'd have to actually release a product for a chance to make any returns?
So what's up with Sekai Project's ridiculous backlog of completely untouched and unfinished titles?

Assuming they paid for all of them. And haven't gotten any sales for any of them. Shouldn't they have lost ridiculous amounts of money until they can actually get sales and make some returns on the investments?
How does this even work?

>> No.17692388

>>17692226
Many of their more expensive products (Hoshizora, Ley Line, and Grisaia) are paid off by kickstarter backers, so stalling them isn't a huge issue. They usually seem to sell half-decently on top of the kickstarter, so actually releasing them is arguably just extra profit on top of the profit they already got. There are a few clear major flops like Wagamama High Spec, but they are probably doing okay as far as their smaller releases and OELVNs go. Nekopara sales in particular probably let them work slowly without worry of bankruptcy, and if all else fails, they can always resort to a bundle for quick cash. It's not sustainable for too long, but it'll work for a while.

Baldr Sky tanking won't be the end of Sekai unfortunately. They need to start consistently failing kickstarters before they are at risk. Them not doing a Baldr Sky kickstarter only shows that Sekai is healthy enough to last a hit from one or two overpriced licenses tanking.

One thing I find unfortunate is that Key Visual Arts trusted them with Rewrite, which means that they are probably in good enough terms to let them keep Clannad in the forseeable future even though Key Visual Arts has started self-publishing. I'm kind of hoping that Frontwing will pull Grisaia away from Sekai at some point in the future though.

Yes, tell us how horrible the translation is without giving any examples. This has been happening a lot recently, hasn't it? There was the dust-up over Subahibi, and no examples have ever been provided. I've seen people trying to spread the same kind of thing about the new Little Busters release, again with no examples. And now MLA too? What is the point, exactly?

>> No.17693839

Sekai has shifted their focus of kickstarters towards funding of physical release and goods rather than funding localization. Most people don't even notice the difference, and it means that the transparency they're supposed to offer to backers need not extend to their actual main operations. They really seem to not like people knowing what's going on there.

Either way, it's very likely there will be a Baldr Sky kickstarter, just because of how big it is, but probably closer to launch.

To make people learn Japanese. While learning, they'll shitpost in the untranslated VN thread and complain about VNs they only half-understood and say all translations are shit when they themselves misunderstand lines way more often than translators do.

>To FBF: How is it working with VisualArt’s? Did they give you lots of freedom on the localisation, did you have regular contact to discuss how things should be translated?
>Jakke: VisualArt’s has been pretty hands-off regarding the localisation. We’ve been able to do the things we wanted to do, and they’ve been very open to all the suggestions we’ve made regarding things that could be improved with an English localisation in mind. They also check things at their end and have pointed out if there’s some issue in the translation.
>To FBF: What translation changes did Fruitbat Factory have to make now that they’re making their translation official?
>Jakke: I don’t think we had to make many changes. There were a few in-jokes that we changed because they felt tasteless on closer inspection, but not many. Mostly we re-checked the older translation with a higher standard of quality in mind. The translation was started quite a long time ago, and our standards - and skills - have gone up since then, so I think we were able to make a lot of improvements.

WagaHigh was at $40 on Steam, SakuSaku looks like it is going to be $20. With those two releases it should be possible to make some comparisons between how much the higher price on Steam contributes to the sales of typical moege (although it obviously won't be exact, since the two titles won't necessarily have the same amount of appeal, not to mention the estimates we get are hardly exact). I imagine that the Denpa price for SakuSaku will be cheaper than the $45 for WagaHigh as well, and comparing their Denpasoft sales will be trivial, since the best selling sort uses long term sales and with neither having a Kickstarter it will just be seeing where the two end up by comparison.

>Do we know anything about how Alternative is selling or do the kickstarter backers just obscure any data out there?

An updated graph from the one posted earlier this week, showing the daily peak concurrent users from the initial Kickstarter release on the left and the general release to the right. It has had a relatively strong response thus far by that measure, peaking at 160 concurrent users without much help from Kickstarter backers and looks like it will maintain a considerable amount of activity for some time. It has also shown a considerable response on SteamSpy as well, although it is too early to try and use that data to try to make an exact estimate. It is hard to determine how it is doing with expectations (Subahibi for example didn't have comparatively horrible numbers, just high expectations), but it appears to be doing decently thus far.

In addition to that though, Muv Luv itself is up to 18-20k thus far on Steamspy which is a respectable amount, and those copies would have been sold with the promise of Alternative (regardless of if the purchaser gets around to playing Alternative or not). It also seems to be well positioned to find success on consoles (Vita initially, but it wouldn't be at all surprising to see it ported to additional consoles with time).

There may be some other snag as it isn't a typical method to judge a release from, but Steam lists just 12 of the 204 Dies Irae reviews as being from Steam purchasers (10 of which are in English), which appears to exclude Kickstarter backers along with those who reviewed the title without purchasing the DLC. The other relevant VN with such a release method is ChuSingura 46+1, where 32 of the 785 reviews are from Steam purchase (18 in English). By comparison to another non-DLC release, Muv Luv Alternative already has 32 English reviews from Steam purchases (and 100 total from Steam purchases, most of the non-English reviews being Chinese), along with 59 reviews from non-Steam purchases (mainly Kickstarter backers).

Of course, Dies Irae success or failure won't be apparent until after both the anime and console release, so it is hardly going to be a definite at this point (unlike Subahibi, where there was a comment about the disappointing sales and there is no foreseeable event to bring it significant promotion)

GOG is such a joke Sekai deserves them. GOG has went back on a lot of things people went to them for, especially return deals and refunds. It's also not surprising how they did not consider Visual Novels an actual game genre even though it has been around for years. Steam benefited so much from GOG's failures that it's almost ironic.
