I've finished Nisemonogatari 1 today and now I'm two thirds in My Big Sister lives in a fantasy world vol. 2.
Nisemonogatari was a good read, Nisioisin is never boring but I felt that the Karen Bee story didn't really start until I was over halfway through the book. I've ordered the second part too.
I didn't really expect anything from My Big Sister lives in a fantasy world but I was pleasantly surprised by how fun it is to read. I like the characters mainly.
J Novel Club is good that way, they have many titles one would probably never even have heard of in the west and I think it's good that we can get some officially translated LNs that isn't just brought over because they have an anime adaption.

Do kid books count? I don't venture outside of /djt/ that much, but an anon turned me onto the art of 柴本 翔, who did the illustration for the パペット探偵団 事件ファイル series so I thought I'd give it a shot. Still a beginner, but it has furigana, so I'm sure I can stumble through it.

No, you need to read online, and you can only read the latest chapters.
The premium membership (the more expensive one) gives you one "premium credit" per month that you can use to download one ebook.
You can also buy extra credits for $6 each, which is is cheaper than buying the books on amazon etc (and the files have higher quality images)

I thought Sukasuka was just a generic story about battle harem.

Picked it up last Saturday since I got nothing to read and spent 2 days in bed immersed in it. Would have bawled my eyes out if I wasn't held it back.

Should have spanned it out over a week or 2 and not 2 days to finish 5 vols.
The writing and story are good enough to make you feel like a part of that world and being moved emotionally for what happened.

It's a VRMMO thing with Isekai elements and Stands.
VRMMO because it's literally about a game that people log into and play at their leisure(with no "you die IRL" bullshit, too).
Isekai because the game's world and its NPCs are so real and alive that a number of players actually see it as a whole new world rather than a game.
And Stands because each player is given unique "Embryos" — powers/weapons based on their personality — resulting in some pretty cool fights.

Setting aside, it's nothing you haven't seen before.
It's highly shonen-like in the sense that you generally have your good guys, bad guys, their motivations, bad guys doing bad shit and good guys trying to stop them.
However, the execution and writing is certainly above the average of such works, and I'd readily recommend it to anyone who enjoys stuff about hype, hope, heart and JUSTICE.

A common grievance with the work.
The original webnovel has 10+ volumes worth of text and he's still there. Sorry. (though I hear that's ending after the current arc)
However, the author loves switching perspectives and many other countries always have a presence in the story.
Dryfe is at war with Altar, so you naturally get to see their people's takes on the situation. There's Caldina being shady in the background, not to mention the side story series about a certain character's adventures there. And then there's not!China, a country with about as much of its history revealed as Altar, if not more.
The world is relatively small, but it's well connected and you often get glimpses into the other parts of the web.

Like the other guy said, it's definitely not a romance work at this point in time. However, the author seems to have plans for it. He has WN uploads dedicated to describing the setting and characters and used Nemesis' section to emphasize that she's a heroine (because many readers didn't see her that way).
Still, I don't think we'll see much development of that kind for a while.

Logistically it doesn't make sense since parents would have to take their children out of their homes to watch it. And he hasn't even hit the industrial age yet so most people aren't going to see the value in what he's doing.
The author is shoe horning modern standards to what's supposed to be a backwards and foreign culture and hand waving away plot holes by saying the citizens love him so they'll do whatever he says. Dendro's author has regular interactions with the audience and sometimes tells what he's planning.
I don't follow that blog too well myself, but I've read on 2ch's general that he said that the protag's stay in generic knightland supposedly ends after the newest arc and that the stage shifts to the floating country for the arc that will come after that.

He also said that the remaining story he has planned will be longer than all the story that came before it, so you can expect it to be going for a while.

I would advise you to either read Vol 1, or chapters 1-8 of the manga to gauge your interest. The anime will cover vols 1 to 4 of the light novels but i'm sure it'll have to cut some stuff because anime adaptation. So if you like it, good, keep reading. Otherwise don't bother and stick to the anime.

Is there actually a site for LN similar to vndb or EGS for VN?
I know lndb is a thing, but the most important thing is missing: Actually being able to search for stuff with tags and such. And mangaupdates is mostly manga with LN stuff feeling just like a little addition little cared about.

Honestly my biggest entry hurdle is just the lack of something to help me find stuff. For example, say I want 3-7 volume series that is concluded, but not any generic harem (you have that in VN and whatnot in masses). Perhaps male targeted stuff with a female protag, or something without much romance, or some mystery stuff or whatever. Something that'd allow me to search existing stuff based on this. Though I guess I could do without blacklisting tags..

What separates a good Light Novel from the others?
I've been trying to get into them lately but it seems that the genre as a whole isn't known for being quality works, and especially when you consider some of these authors aren't even of legal age. Of course, I don't expect amazing prose or anything, but there has to be something that passes for quality right?

> What separates a good Light Novel from the others?
Your preferences? It's boring to repeat it but its subjective. Just try to find some works with aspects you like and give them a try. Also, as with everything it's about searching for the right thing. You are not always going to struck gold with what you pick up. And sometimes some series will unexpectedly surprise you. It helps if you aren't completitionist-fag so if you don't like a series you can just drop it after one book. I have a problem that if I start a series I feel unfathomable need to stick with it until the end even if I don't like it at all.

> the genre as a whole
That's one of very odd and completely wrong assumptions too many people make. LN isn't "a genre". It's more like "fuzzily defined publishing category" at best. There are works I would consider quite solid, fun works, bad works, boring ones etc. It's not like there's a rulebook by which you judge a written text is LN or not. It's just a publishing category designed to make it easier for publishers to market it to readers.

And then there're isekai LN/WN threads that never got pruned because they occasionally talk about their manga adaptations.

In the manga, they're grossly reduced to their flaws. Darkness wets herself the moment something bad happens to her, Megumin is all about explosions, and Aqua is a litteral tumblr-tier retard.
In the novel, Darkness has Kazuma quickly figured out and often dominates him, Megumin is still about explosion and doesn't talk about them 100% of the time and can still give Kazuma a run for his money, and Aqua is competent as a priest, even if her intelligence is pretty low.

Not really. You can get recommendations on classical stuff, like Spice & Wold and the Monogatari books, but whether they're good or not depends from who translated them and if it fits your taste.
It's like asking if a food is good. Maybe it is, but you don't like mushrooms so you can't say.

Translated popular garbage? The good LNs for the most part either don't have translations or they're not well done enough to recommend. If you don't know Japanese this isn't the medium for you, stick to English original books.

I like Konosuba.
I read too many "hurr durr I'm reincarnated I am so smart everyone else is dumb" recently, it's a nice change to have a reincarnated loser who still manages to embarass himself.

Mate, she's basically a genocidal maniac that abuses everyone around herself while hiding in her room lazing about and scheming, like the only thing that makes her better than her female Nyarlathotep of a patron god is the fact that she cares about Sensei and Ariel. Sophia a bit too.

Well yeah, she's a lazy bum usually and she's not exactly super imposing, just really eerie. Shiro really loves herself some lolibabas I noticed, her taking care of Ariel and Sensei were really nice scenes. Sophia becoming a sobbing mess when she got told that she can't come on the dimension hopping trip was pretty emotional too.
