Can someone explain Hatsune Miku to me?

She's a girl that you can make sing whatever you want, and with programs like MMD, she can dance to your songs. People like girls, anon. Her appeal is that her voice can be pretty goddamn versatile, and since she has no discernible personality, you can plug her into any situation you want. She can sing metal, jazz, pop, you name it. And people make tons of different designs for her from song to song.

You have to see a concert live to understand Hatsune Miku best. She was on David Letterman, and I recorded that on tape.

The effect is startling. Youtube videos, unless you're getting a high frame rate, just don't do the performances any justice.

There are fan-made videos of MikuMiku Dance, but don't count those against a true concert experience. Buy a DVD (blurryray if you must) and check it out that way.

Because the Miku is cute and her fans love her. That and as a music tool it's pretty impressive. I've been to the concerts and it's really just a unique experience.

Miku herself is a fairly simple but appealing visual design, and a solid voice synthesizer that gets updated still. The real reason it's popular (and vocaloid in general) is the fans making and loving their creations featuring her, miku herself is just the medium.
