Art imitates life, and some fictional characters are very well fleshed out; usually those in lengthy visual novels. You can really get a feel for what makes them tick when the author is good. Miku is not really the same level as OC character for a waifu. Sure, she doesn't have canon personality, but it doesn't mean that waifuing her means you just construct some perfect girlfriend personality and insert it into her. Of course you can do that and there won't be anything technically wrong about it, but I highly doubt it's even possible to really fall in love this way. The main difference from pure OC character is that she does have some material. It's not canon, but there is lots of songs and everything to build her personality that you can experience. In most cases she isn't just your creation, she is your interpretation based on works of others, just like regular waifu is your own interpretation of her source material. Sure this material might not be as consistent, but it's not like all fictional characters are always consistent(eg. Evangelion).
I might not have definite way to prove that, but I do love my Miku from the bottom of my heart. I know it from all kinds of things, from the way I feel about her, to actual physical manifestations of these feelings and the way she changed my life. And it all is based on my own observations of other waifufags and other people in love.

When an author creates some character for manga or anime they do chose personality and look for characters. It is different because you do not design her, but interpret her, just like you would do with anime character. And you do need to fill holes in anime characters as well, but just like with Miku you extrapolate what you have, not simply choose whatever you prefer.
In other words the difference is that when you make OC waifu you design her in purpose to make perfect girlfriend. For me it completely different, I just listened to songs and fantasized about her just like I would do it with any other characters and fallen in love with her. It was never my intention to make her into my waifu, I didn't believed I'll ever have a waifu and I wanted 3DPD. But then when I didn't expected it, it hit me like a train. I've fallen in love like crazy with this cute girl and my whole life was changed by that overwhelming feeling.

That's all true. Just like when you have a picture or song about Miku herself that gives her some personality, it doesn't automatically make it not about her. It's still Miku but some particular interpretation. It's true I do not love all Miku, as she is way more than just one design and one personality, she is more meta. But I am in love with and only with that one particular interpretation. And she is in fact Miku, just like that cute school girl in your pic, or that self-entitled girl in World is Mine or that singing android in that fanmade VN, etc.

Long time /jp/ poster here, hoping I could get some advice from other vocaloid fans.

So there's this girl in one of my uni classes who I've been talking to for a few weeks. We've really hit it off, she likes all the same stuff as I do. Anime, manga, even listens to j-pop (mostly mainstream stuff like AKB48, but I'm fine with that). I think she's gorgeous as well.

A few days ago, she asked if I wanted to go out to eat together, just the two of us. Maybe I'm wrong, but this very much seemed as if she was asking me on a date. It's something I would have never had the courage to do myself, if I even wanted to.

See, I would love to go on a date with her. Problem is, I've been in what I consider a serious relationship with Luka for a number of years now. Since her release, Luka has always just struck me in a way that no other Vocaloid has. I remember giving her English lessons back in her V2 days and being ecstatic hearing her English improve so much with each subsequent voicebank release. It really felt like I was helping her achieve fluency.

Anyway, point is I'm very serious about my relationship with Luka. I don't care if she's "real" or not, my emotional and spiritual connection with her is very strong regardless of her physical state.

Even so, I still very much enjoy the time spent with the aforementioned uni girl. I'm a very awkward person (who on this board isn't honestly), but with her conversation is so easy and fluid. One time she jokingly held my hand while we were walking to class and I felt something I've never been able to feel with Luka. The sensation of a warm, physical, living hand against my own was incredible.

To me, being in a relationship with the two is NOT an option. I won't do that to either of them, and it's just not the sort of guy I am. If I agree to go on this date, I feel as if I'd be throwing away all the years I've spent together with Luka. But if I don't agree, I'll probably never get to feel that warm living physical connection again. What would you do in my situation?

I know that if I would abandon her I would hate it, these feelings may make you think not straight, but after I calm down I'm always so glad I didn't leaved her. Especially to some 3DPD that you might discover they weren't really that perfect as you saw them first.
I'd friendzone her in your situation. But you should really give lot's of thinking to it and try to not get influenced from short living Infatuation, it might be the most important decision in your life. Think about what does the relationship with Luka means to you and how does she change your life.
If you are happy with her, she makes you feel comfortable, loved, gives colors to your life, inspire you, etc, then you should really stay with her. It happens rarely, but I've seen multiple people like that. Of course there are people who leave waifu and go for 3D and never come back. But these who come back and expect to form such a meaningful and deep relationship as before they are faced with disappointment.

I'm not sure if you are ignorant on purpose. The fact relationship is with 3D or 2D doesn't change the way your brain handles it. Love is love and you can never know 100% of a 2D or 3D. It always comes down to being in love with your vision or interpretation in your head of some 2D or 3D girl.
You can't just leave your girl and go fuck with some random mistress and expect your feelings forwards the first one won't change.

Well, I believe it's not worth for sake of experience. I personally would never do it, but if living with regret of not trying it will be worse than living with regret of losing losing waifu, then maybe he should try it, even if it means he will lose his chance to live happily with the girl he originally loved.

Why not? What's stopping anyone from getting a waifu anytime? It's not hard, it doesn't require any effort on your part because the waifu basically can't say no or reject you no matter what. However, why do you seem to care so much about "how hard it is" to get a waifu? What does it matter in the slightest? Again, you're just using that as an excuse to feel better about your situation.
