Any of the ALT dudes from last thread here? I'd like to learn more about your experiences. I myself want to do JET after college for a few years for a few reasons:
>practice the language
>be able to live independently for the first (real) time
>gain the experience of working in Japan
>take a few years off of school in order to sort out my long-term plans (thinking about grad or law school as well)

I'm currently majoring in Japanese and philosophy so it's not like my prospects for employment after college are stellar anyways. Do you guys have any thoughts? Sorry for the off-topic post, but the posts in these threads are often very informative and have a lot of good experiences to share.

Posting some pics I've saved from past threads.

No idea, but I will do the same as well soon.
Basically I didn't plan for anything apart from saving around 15-20000 euro and then going to japan.
My reasons are the same as yours basically, except that I have potential job prospects.
As for teaching in Japan, I will have to think about it, since hopefully I won't have to do it, but still it could be a fun experience.

>> No.17440560

>>17440364
Your reasoning is fairly fine, the experience can vary greatly depending on where you get situated and what your school is like.

This is just conjecture, but I think that if you get put into a major city, like Tokyo or Osaka, the Japanese English teachers are more likely to be stricter on how you pronounce and have an headstrong approach, which can be hell for some ALTs.

Also, the first year is the easiest in terms of bills and living expenses, things like health insurance and taxes increase in the second year because you have an income history by that time. So keep that in mind if you do come over.

Thanks for the tips. I imagine I won't be put into a major city only because everyone else already wants those positions (although I'm not quite sure how the selection process works). I'm fine being placed in the boonies regardless.

Yeah, I haven't thought much about expenses though. I'm still two years off of even graduating, so this is still a long way away.

I am not sold as ALT as a way into Japan. I know quite a few people who have done so and came out okay, but I know many more who have gone through hell and returned to America knowing less Japanese then when they started. It is highly dependent upon where you get sent, and you have little to no say into where that is.

I went to Japan for an intensive language program. In one year I went from barely knowing hiragana and katakana to passing N2. They also gave me a recommendation to a masters program at a good University.

As for your goals:
>practice the language

Depends on where you go. Your job will be done mostly or entirely in English, so that wont help. Social life could be English too depending on your situation.

>be able to live independently for the first (real) time

Good point, but you can do that at grad school too.

>gain the experience of working in Japan

It isn't like really working in Japan. ALT teaching is a joke, you are little more than a CD. You'd get more experience of the Japanese working culture taking a part time job at McDonalds.

>take a few years off of school in order to sort out my long-term plans (thinking about grad or law school as well)

One thing to keep in mind is that it is quite hard to go back to school after you quit. Spend a year or two doing ALT and you wont wanna go back.

>> No.17441173

I wouldn't rush into Japan unless you have a good plan desu. Unless you really don't care what happens career wise (ie, you're a girl planning on getting married fast).

Otherwise get a job that is marketable in Japan, but in your home country (preferably where you work with Japanese people) and brush up on your Japanese (hard, like n2 minimum), then apply for a real job in Japan through a job agency. (Tons that deal with placing gaijin)

I had interviews with unilever, cartier, hotels, consulting firms, etc...and eventually landed a decent job that actually pays me like a college graduate and not a tape recorder.

You can actually do this without learning Japanese as well, but you better have amazing qualifications or something, or be willing to settle for low wages.

>>What did you end up doing, and how hard was it to get?
I have a business degree, so it's in that realm. (Numbers type, like accounting/finance)

I got my N1 while I was in college, got a job where most of my coworkers were Japanese, and most of our clients were also Japanese straight out of college, and was exactly what my degree was for. So I got relevant experience + business language experience.(You can get these jobs if you search on Japanese language job sites for America/Euro/etc...just make sure you're able to put N1 or N2 on your resume. This will impress recruiters, though actual companies will not really know what they are usually) After 1-2 years, I started looking for jobs in Japan online and I got tons of interviews through skype and eventually got the job. Interviewing at 10 PM is kind of a bitch, but you gotta do what you gotta do.

Just stumbled onto this thread and saw this. If you are thinking about long term living in Japan (and actually having a career) if you get to at least business level Japanese and go to law school, you would probably be able to find a job at one of the Japanese or foreign firms in Tokyo. Generally Japanese bengoshi are pretty bad at Japanese, and given the shrinking Japanese economy, businesses are looking to expand outside of Japan, which means they need bilingual English/Japanese attorneys.

I'm from Rias Baixas and they look like a batea, which is a vessel in the form of a trough, used in ports and arsenals, or a wooden platform that is placed in the sea for the breeding or cultivation of mussels and other molluscs.

Btw, batea is the galician name of that structure.

I wasn't actually expecting a long-term life/career in Japan because I felt that there wouldn't actually be any opportunities post-grad school/law school. I wasn't expecting anything besides JET, really. I knew that I could always job search after the ALT stint, but I'm not sure how well that'd go for someone with only a BA in Japanese + philosophy.

A bilingual attorney working in Japan sounds nice (not that being an attorney is nice - it sounds like hell anywhere you go) and I'll keep this in mind. Thanks anon.

They closed the roads to all traffic because it was crowded as fuck and some foreign bitch came riding her bike through all the people. A warden spotted her, blew his whistle and moved in front of her with an arm waved out and she just fucking biked around him, didn't even turn her head at all.
