Surreal/magic themes are definitely strong in Amatsutsumi. As for religious things I dunno how much is too much for you, I don't think it really goes much into that besides ghosts and the fact that the MC's race considers themselves gods compared to normal humans.

1st route (Kokoro) was really awesome and heartwarming. 2nd route (Kyouko) was less good but I still liked it despite it feeling like a filler arc. 3rd route (Mana) started fine but the drama in the second half was fucking terrible and overly drawn out and made me strongly tempted to skip it, and it made me end up hating the heroine herself. What a disappointing route. So far I'd say it's good overall but Hotaru's route will really make it or break it for me.

Enjoyable read with cute girls. The main cast have fun interactions with each other that extend into the heroine routes. Common route is actually a bit lengthy, starting with the MC working for Marshmellow Tree and helping to get the store back up on its feet. Every heroine gets their focus and there's actually a fair amount of character development before getting into their routes.

I've only done Rairai and loli onee-san routes so far and both have very little drama and you get stuff like cute dates and a lot of h scenes (which are pretty good). You also unlock 2 more H scenes per heroine after clearing their route.

If you're like me, you'll have a good time if you like the girls.

Just check their current games and compare it to their previous games. The quality of their works have taken a nosedive in recent times. Just because it's full priced doesn't make the game good.

I liked Frey's route and bits of the common route, but most of the VN is fairly bland / run-of-the-mill knightshit. The H scene art is pretty hot though, and there's like 6-8 H scenes per heroine, so if the routes being stuffed with H scenes is your sort of thing then go for it.

Finished Misora's route in Aoiro Note.

A fairly "normal" moege that however feels like a weak Doko Dona in some ways. Unlike Doko Dona it apparently needed to have some silly eroge cliché scenes along the line of peeking and whatnot. The male friend, this time a trap, is also nowhere near as strong as the buddy in Doko Dona. Expected, but still sad.
Apart of that, the game just feels like it rushes things too much. Common is 200kb, but whatever little plot it has feels like it got almost completely skipped, while you don't even get to know the characters that well, or what they are about. It feels a bit weird. The overall atmosphere stays somewhat similar and it's not bad, but I feel like it could've been more for sure.

The route then is pretty standard moege fair. Confession, 1 minute later kiss, another minute later sex. Then you get your basic date and more sex and stuff. Then drama starts and at the end the heroine dies. Wait what? Yes.
It fits about as well as you can guess, aka not at all. Nice idea, rather questionable execution though. The problem is also, again, that it's all so fast. The whole route is ~150kb. I at least wasn't able to take anything very serious here. Especially because it's a moege through and through otherwise.


A weird game. But at least that will probably make me play all the routes. Isn't particularly long, and who knows what will happen there. Plus, just look at the grin the girl to the upper left has. Sure, feels totally ooc, but hey.

VNs aren't like that at all. The average VN has maybe 20% of its lines voiced. The rest is narration and the protag's lines which aren't voiced.
Games with a voiced protag are rare and usually either feature way more than typical narration or simply aren't too long. The total amount of voiced content is fairly similar for most full price titles.

I actually deal with VN scripts semi-often, my rule of thumb is 33% spoken heroine lines, 33% unvoiced protagonist lines (both speech+thought), and 33% narrative text. Of course, it varies per VN, but that's the average.

I want to play VNs both on my regular computer and my notebook. I don't want to install everything twice, mess with online syncing for save files and my notebook has limited space on its windows partition, too. I figured the best way to do this would be to buy an external hard drive and keep my games on there.

Huh? I'm not sure what you mean - are you saying people want to heart the heroines so, as a direct result, the scripts are over 50% heroine? I look at scripts directly for both moege and plotge so I know that's usually not the case. But rather than just appealing to authority whatever... just think about it.

1 - Each voiced line of dialogue costs money. Therefore writers are encouraged to, at the very least, restrain themselves when it comes to voice dialogue.
2 - VN protagonists narrate to themselves constantly. Things like pic related are everywhere and will throw off the ratio. A heroine will speak 1 line then the protag will say 1 line and think 2 lines, putting the ratio heavily in his favor, so to speak.
3 - The protagonist is ALWAYS present, but heroines aren't. In a scene where a protagonist is alone in his bedroom, every line will be unvoiced - a 100 line scene would throw off the ratio hard for several future scenes even.

You'll still run into save game issues with an external drive since the save files aren't always in the game folder. You'll have to find the save location and transfer that every time you switch from pc to notebook, which is fine if you don't mind the hassle.

It's a budget thing. When I tried https://vndb.org/v18766 , I was surprised at how little dialogue with the girls outside of the ero was. The protag was literally going on and on and on about random stuff and generally a loner.

Once you go a bit more into VNs, you'll also realize the so called "filler narration" and friends. A good indicator for that is randomly repeating whatever a character just said before in narration, which is utterly pointless, and just there to pad the script for "free". Voices cost money.


That said, yes, there are exceptions with more than 20-30% voiced stuff. The steampunk full voice games for example should be quite heavy on the voices, I'd assume. Not particularly long either, but hey. Noratoto is not too long and as such has a bit more voice acting% than you usually have. And so on.

I also have both a desktop and a laptop and ran into same issue. Like the other anon said save file locations vary game by game, plus like any other game many make marks into registry or somewhere else during the installation process that isn't the game's installation folder, have DRM etc. so even if you actually have both the game itself and its save files in proper location, the game might still refuse to start on your other machine unless you also go through the proper installation on it as well.

F.ex. as far as I'm remembering Dei Gratia, Mushi no Me and Furuiro Meikyuu Rondo can be easily transferred with USB stick or external HDD and played on other rig without having to install everything again, but something like Himawari remake forced you to install the game from scratch when I tried transferring it from my desktop to laptop even when I had already applied the crack, not to mention it stores its save files in %appdata% rather than the game's own folder.

I'd suggest to just stash all the install ISOs and other files on your main rig or external HDD, cave in and only install things on your laptop when you know you're going to be playing a certain game a lot if space is an issue.

However missing either one isn't bad story nor game progression wise, the next route gets unlocked either way by loading the save file with the first route completed. I'd have to disagree with the other anon. I liked the endings as more gamey "you fucked up somewhere" longer game overs rather than something you'd go out of your way to get unless you 're a completionist.

They don't really have any plot stuff as far as I remember, so you might as well try to go for the best one and it's really up to you which one you happen to like the most. That or only the best endings had the plot important stuff. I'm not 100% sure, but I remember each ending or at least some other short branches also having Force Crash unlockables (or was it in Heart only with Force Crash points?), but until you get chapter select you can't really reasonably collect them all.

Also another thing I don't really recall well, but the only small plot thing that you get from collecting all the good ends of both games is extra, only a few lines long epilogue at the end of Dive 2, but it's really more of a bonus than anything. I don't think other endings had similar bonuses for getting every single one apart from new CGs obviously. Some endings, or at least one of them in Dive 1 also has a boss battle you won't get in the best ending of that route and vice versa, but I think the best ending's boss battle is a lot more fitting.

I think I've heard this meme before and checked if that was really the case: It wasn't. I wasn't surprised either. There are some weird misconceptions about some games that come up every now and then here.

Not like the game is really good. Let's be clear here: It's a game where almost nobody bothers reading all routes. (based on EGS average reading time and its actual length) For really fucking good reason. The routes are so, damn, awfully dragged out. The status quo overstays its welcome wayyy too much. And then you have the problem that each route has two "climaxes", and I'm fairly sure most people want to be fucking done after the first one.

I like my moege every now and then, but I wouldn't say it's heaven. The unbalanced common route, crappy drama and the routes being really a little too heavy on the ero are certainly issues.

That said, it's probably the safest moege for the month. I tried the Whirlpool title, and that already started so horrible that I couldn't stand it for more than 5 minutes.
Then there's Aoiiro Note which is a little on the short side. That would be totally fine, but it spends too much time on stuff it probably shouldn't with its length. The ending for the main heroine is also a little on the "this is not a moege" side. Actually, most of its "plot" should've probably not included given its length?

Common route was fairly decent for me. It had a very slice of life kind of feel with the MC helping out at the shop and slowly improving it while having fun times with the cast along the way.

One of the strengths of Mashimaro is the familial theme since many of the characters no longer have/live with their parents so they instead rely on each other like family. The shop is like their second home and we get a very cozy feeling throughout from their interactions. MC even helps the girls with their issues which then leads into the routes. Perhaps common route was a bit unbalanced for the girls, but it was quite coherent in the story and themes.

Not quite sure what you mean by crappy drama since the game is very light hearted with minimal drama...probably the only random bit that stood out was the drug part which was resolved right away so it was pretty much a non-issue for me.

I like my H scenes in moege but I understand some people don't like them and they do take up a fair portion. Even then, the routes themselves were quite sweet and filled with diabetes inducing romance which is really the essence of moege. Haven't checked out those other titles yet so I can't comment on that.

I'll give some more impressions once I get through the next heroine.

Pretty much all of its plot. It's just generally not good. Like them getting a random message at the evening, that their food distributor is going bankrupt and they won't be getting any ingredients the next day and onward. That's just so far removed from reality, it hurts. And I generally can't get into such absurd "drama" for the sake of it.

Moege drama reasons need to be a little more realistic, because it generally comes out of nowhere already. In this specific case it wouldn't have hurt them much to do this a little closer to reality either, although that would've removed the "urgency" and some "direness". And as we all know, drama needs to be super urgent, otherwise it's not working...?
I know that some people are fine with what I guess you could consider "moege drama". But to me if it's just pointless stuff too far removed from reality, I'd rather have no drama/story. Especially with it so often not having any consequence. You can actually literally skip any of these "story" drama arcs in Marshmallow, and you won't even realize you skipped anything. So it comes out of nowhere, makes little sense and changes nothing. That's kinda bad. Even for a moege.

Japan really undervalues simple realistic issues that aren't really what you'd consider major drama, but rather.. problems. Iyashikei series tend to focus on that and I feel that moege would fit well into that.



The strength of Marshmallow is along the lines of what you said. The characters, their relationships and so on are somewhat well done and it's especially nice that the protag isn't just in the center and there's absolutely no relationships going on between the girls. It's still kinda moege tier and could've probably been better, but it was definitely not too bad. In addition to that, the game also managed to not be too boring and in fact quite funny every now and then thanks to a certain loli.
But the "plot" parts that it tried to do... I don't know.

The food distributor arc is actually rooted in reality as I do have a friend that runs a restaurant who has told me stories about supplier issues. Even if they don't go bankrupt, issues on the supplier end can delay shipments which will lead to a similar situation as in Mashimaro. To be fair, the girls are also novices and pretty much just took over the family business and likely would not have had the proper knowledge regarding insurance and protection for their store and contracts, so in a sense, this helps them develop and grow to become better owners.

But as you said, it does come randomly. It is not all that unusual in VNs but how we see it really depends on our suspension of disbelief. Shit happens and people have to deal with it, I guess? Although, some foreshadowing would have been better to make it seem less random, ie seeing poor management from supplier end or maybe late shipments. The arcs do establish character development so I wouldn't say they change nothing. Running into issues is actually par for the course for any business and those issues help characters grow. In this case, they tied it to the family theme by having everyone come together to resolve it. I would say its more of an idealized version of reality with a happy ending as per moege stories.

Well, of course this can happen, but a moege wants to keep things a little down to not have things go too harshly. So basically them raging about a shitty supplier who fucked up hard and fucked over tons of customers and probably also tricked them in some way doesn't fit too well.

In this case, my biggest issue is that not even 12 hours before expected delivery they got a note that their delivering shop is bankrupt. That's just beyond silly. Doubly so given that they ordered from a small Japanese shop, as far as I remember, so those should not want to cause all kinds of trouble either. Regardless, even without that they should still have contracts running and carrying things out till a certain date would be worthwhile and in the interest of everyone involved.


Honestly, now that you write about it... they should've just made an arc about a delivery getting messed up and not happening. That's more likely to happen than the whole company behind it randomly deciding to go bankrupt and letting their customers now somewhere during late evening.

Nodoka for me was top tier until her ending demanded a reset of literally everything everyone had been through. I couldn't deal. Felt wrong on every level. Inori and Korone's endings were the only ones I could deal with, but I think harem end still wins out over everything.

I did like them all though, all things considered. Even Nodoka who is usually the type I dislike. Great fucking game, I think it's underrated as hell.
