As long as they're not trying to be obnoxious anyone can learn to play by the rules, and a bit of elitism is all it takes take to keep the worst kinds of shitposters from frequenting your board.

You remember that "Rikas butt is really lewd"-poster we had a couple threads ago, right? Now, if half of our userbase were like him we'd be well on our way to becoming the next Furrafinity. Once there's a certain level of cancer festering in your userbase it's only going to attract more insanity.

Lethe the Witch of Forgetfulness. She takes you to the magical Distorted land where rivers of ice and Spirytus Rektyfikowany flow throughout the landscape. Jack Daniels' bottles grow on trees. There are also ramshackle cabins in the woods with jukeboxes and coolers filled with Gatorade so you don't die of dehydration. Night lasts as long as you want it to and when done getting wasted with her you can return to the real world without a soul obliterating hangover. Beato shows up as well and you can get drunk with her.

Also she has a hat.

There's actually one other thing I wanted to ask about if anyone's got the time. A couple of the larger doujinshi I bought actually turned out to be compilations of several smaller doujinshi, some of which have already been uploaded to sadpanda. I was wondering whether I need to go through the effort of rescanning and cleaning these parts, or if I can use the preexisting scans and just do the new parts? Also, should I upload the parts individually as I finish them, or wait and upload the whole thing together?

Finally finished Umineko for the first time.
Holy hell that was a masterpiece.
There are still things that I don't get though.

At the end, we see Yasu-Beatrice sink into the bottom of the ocean, where the catbox lies.Does this mean this is where the game begins? or does it signify the end of the game?

The whole catbox thing is also somewhat confusing to me. But assuming that's a metaphor for the combined theories of Sayo's messages, the witch hunt and Tohya, I can sort of get past that. But does that mean that the entire metaworld was Battler trying to reason through the events that he forgot about? But if that is true, how does Ange know what happened? That was Bernkastel's doing right? On some higher level than the "real world" it looks like magic does exist, and entities like Bern, lambda, Dlanor and Will do exist.

It also seems from the tea party that Lion still exists. Same with the Ciester sisters, though I was sure they were representative of the guns used in the murders. They still exist off the game board, but none of the other fantasy characters do? What's different about them?

If you haven't yet, I'd recommend reading the manga version of Episode 8. Several parts were altered to give more concrete answers or expand upon the story. The same goes for Will's breakdown of the witch's illusion in Episode 7, where he now clearly explains all the crimes.

For example, after the scene of Beatrice and Battler drowning, we see Beatrice waking up inside the world of the catbox along with an amnesiac Battler.
Hoping to make him remember everything, Beato starts up the first game, leading back to the start of the series. This scene confirmed that the Player Battler in the Meta world was the identity of Battler Tohya lost at sea. This is further reinforced in the epilogue where Tohya reunites with everyone. In the Manga version, the Player Battler is also there alongside Beatrice, and we see Tohya's memories of his life as Battler leave Tohya and merge with the Player Battler.

I rewatched some episodes of the anime this morning (I never finished it so I said, why not). I remember the first time I saw it I felt that the sudden amount of exhibition was strange and that there was something weird, like rushed, that immediately gave me a bad vibe and ended up killing my interest. Now I feel that there's so little! I'm kind of liking it anyway, maybe I will continue to watch it on Monday, although there's this bittersweet feeling of knowing that it isn't finished.
If you go with an open mind is not that bad, I mean, there is no way they could do anything with just 26 episodes. An effort was made at least, and watching the characters animated along with the music is cool enough. Have a good weekend! Kiss

Beyond actually animating important clues left on the adaptation, don't animate superficially. Understand what is going on and subtly nudge the anime toward it.

There could have been subtle visual cues about the nature of subjective narration early on. Like a character seeing something, and another character seeing something else entirely in the same scene. Small cues, not overwhelming, but enough to say 'haha!' in hindsight.

Meta Battler's position should have been made viable. When Meta Battler reaches a conclusion, a flashback could be here to put everything together.

Like, Kinzo death status. A nice, short flashback should have shown him never actually getting out of his study.

I think it's a little difficult to make a connection with the other titles assuming the title will have the same format as the others, "x no naku koro ni", if that stays true I can think of four concrete possibilities here:
1. x can possibly reveal the location or setting of the game (maybe an animal specific to a certain place)
2. x is a word related to the old titles (there are few candidates though, "when witches cry" or something stupid like that)
3. x reveals the theme of the game or it's something unexpected ("when robots cry")
4. That statement is just to hype things up and the connection is minimal (for some reason similar things happen all the time with Japanese releases)
I'm pretty sure I had another one but I forgot.

One of my favorite scenes is during Episode 2: Beatrice presents her first challenge with the locked chapel, where Rosa finds a key inside the envelope kept in Maria's bag, and introduces the red truth.
In the original sound novel, Battler is trying to come up with all sorts of theories to explain it, but keeps getting them shut down and is taunted by Beatrice to surrender. Suddenly, he remembers that when he's feeling cornered, he should try and turn the chessboard around, and bounces back on his feet. Just like he reversed the chess board, he reversed the situation and cornered Beatrice in that moment.

In the anime adaptation, he almost immediately solves it. Very little struggle, no suspense, it was all too brief. It didn't even have the same music.

As much as I enjoy the logic battles, I also know there's more to Umineko than that.

Adapting the entirety of Umineko into an anime would be no small task. It has layers of mystery, fantasy battles, horror and gruesome murders, and a large cast with lots of scenes dedicated to them. Even mundane scenes are important to the plot and the overall theme. You need to focus and balance all those elements to make a decent adaptation that doesn't neglect any of its important parts that makes it Umineko, but it would be a ton of work. I believe something more realistic while still keeping the spirit would be animating just the important and iconic scenes, rather than retelling the whole story. You can have an episode dedicated to a major logic battle and then another on a fantasy battle, for example. Something that the fans would already enjoy.

Here's an interesting subject that I think requires everyone who reads Umineko to come up with their own interpretations for. What are your thoughts on the true nature of the Meta World? What is each character's role in it. Is it the afterlife for those caught up in the tragedy, a purgatory Beatrice and Battler are stuck in, some imaginary setting in Tohya's head? Or is there no proper non-magic explanation for it?

>> No.17477111

>>17477005
>Or is there no proper non-magic explanation for it?
From a purely non-magic perspective, the Meta World represents Tohya's attempts to understand the mystery behind the Rokkenjima accident, and to recover his own memories by reading the stories written by Yasu/Ikuko (who are most probably the same person).

Meta-Beatrice represents, well, Beatrice, but also the legends of Rokkenjima, Yasu's heart, and the secrets behind the mystery. It's all very metaphoric, but isn't magic. It's just how Tohya visualizes his combat against the Rokkenjima murders.

>> No.17477150

>>17477111
That sounds pretty interesting. Personally my interpretation is a bit more on the magic perspective. I see the Meta World as this big crossroads on a higher level of the narrative written by Ikuko/Featherine. Several characters arrive here in different ways. Beato (Yasu's Beatrice persona) and the player Battler (Tohya's lost identity) arrive there after drowning in the ocean. Lambda and Bernkastel are just passing through on their journey through the sea of Kakera. Ange-Beatrice enters when Ange jumps of the roof of the skyscraper, and returns to her world either right after when she hits the safety net (magic end) or much later on during her boat ride to Rokkenjima (trick end).

Some of the other fantasy character's like the residents of heaven may or may not exist in some form outside this, like Dlanor and Will who are personifications of real life rules of the mystery genre. Other's like the demon's and furniture were almost definitely spawned within it as manifestations of various aspects of the gameboards based on Beato's heart.

I do agree that Player Battler's story mirrors Tohya's journey through his own mind to arrive at the truth, though I'm not sure whether the Meta World itself was actually created by him and Ikuko, as she often seems to switch to Featherine whenever referencing it, though this may just be because the two are one and the same and just switch their appearance depending on the level of narrative their currently observing.

>> No.17477222

>>17477150
This is pretty much exactly how I see it too, but for the Heaven people I'm pretty sure they're just fantasy characters created by Beato. The only 'proper' Meta characters are Battler, Beato, Lambda, Bern, Erika and Featherine.

To add to this, Eva-Beatrice is a curious case as she seems to represent various things over the curse of the story.

She starts out in Episode 3 as a piece on the gameboard representing another side of Eva, then ascends to a higher level upon solving the epitaph. At this point she seemed to be able to influence the gameboard’s scenario beyond Beato’s control, though this may have also been part of the plan to trick Battler. From a non-fantasy perspective, it’s likely that her influence was due to Tohya believing Eva was the true culprit at the time of Banquet’s writing. Either way, Eva-Beatrice still doesn’t seem able to access the actual Meta World until Battler pulls her there from the Gameboard.

After her defeat, she reappears in Episode 4 as a representation of the “black witch”, taking that form due to Ange’s lingering hatred for Eva. Then in Episode 6 she’s back to being just a piece representing Eva’s darker thoughts. Finally, in Episode 8 she seems to have ascended once again, this time as the personification of the Eva culprit theory in the future.

>> No.17477259

>>17477222
Yeah that seems more likely. Just because the concepts Will and Dlanor personify are real doesn't mean they are. And Gertrude/Cornelia just represent the things used to seal doors.

What about Ange?

>> No.17477291

>but for the Heaven people I'm pretty sure they're just fantasy characters created by Beato.

If you go by a magical explanation, then Dlanor and Will are almost certainly proper meta characters, 'real'.

They are summoned not by Beato but by Lambda/Bern using their powers as Senate's Witches (which certainly exist). They have no formal ties with the story, didn't come from marriage sorciere and weren't created by Yasu. What's more, they aren't limited to Beato's gameboard, exist through Kakeras, and in EP 8 Tea Party, the letter Lambda and Bern get implies that they have a conceptual existence by themselves.

The stakes and the chiesters are creation of Yasu, but Dlanor and Will were summoned by Lambda and Bernkastel.

There's also that side material that shows Dlanor coming to inspect the scenarios of the gameboard to ensure that they adhere to the decalouge, showing that she exists outside of it and has been around since before it's creation.

Doesn't Erika also mention that those 3 were to be executed with the rest of the demons and furniture during Episode 5? It's mentioned that there are a bunch of other Chiesters we never get to see, each also named after some kind of gun or bullet. Since 45, 410, and 00 are meant to symbolize the guns on the island, maybe they're the only ones that are connected to the gameboard, while the Chiester imperial corps as a whole exists beyond it.

Why was Clair so underutilized as a character? She’s got such a pretty looking design and her role in Episode 7 was really interesting. Yet she’s the least recognized of Yasu’s personas by far, and was one of the few characters not present at all in the final Episode, losing even to characters like Professor Ootsuki and Captain Kawabata. Simple: they didn't.

The meta-world Ange represents how she has come to accept the tragedy, pretty much like how meta-Battler represents Ikuko's quest for the truth. There are some fascinating interactions here, because Ikuko, by publishing new stories once he understood the mystery, prods and helps the development of Ange in turn (thus Meta Battler 'meets' Meta Ange). This doesn't that their soul actually met, just that one has metaphorically helped the other.

I now believe that Ange's meetings with Ikuko/Featherine were metaphorical for the author guiding the reader through the story.

I prefer this theory more than all the others. The idea that everything was just a giant metaphor as a personal struggle for the characters to move on makes the story more beautiful and complex than just using the excuse of magic in my eyes. But I also believe that it's possible that the meta can be real, like as a place between two worlds where witches plays and affect our world. Our reality seeks a logical solution to everything that witches might touch or change, like some kind of rule, and everything is seeing as a product of our imagination, a dream or a strange event. Someone from the meta word, or the magic itself, can be just like an emotion or a just fantasy for us, but real somewhere else, and so both theories can coexist.

Well, by Umineko's end, you are more or less obligated to admit that both incompatible interpretations of Umineko are both equally valid, and probably both equally true.

Which is something that no other piece of fictions do, now that I think about it.

Not equally valid interpretations, and you choose to pick the one you like. That has been done multiple times. But equally valid, and equally objectively true incompatible interpretations you need to admit at the same time to make sense of the story. This is a head turner.

You need both the fantasy and the mystery interpretation to fully understand Umineko. Even when it makes no sense to mix them together, Umineko makes no sense if you don't admit that both are true.

>> No.17479538

>Umineko makes no sense if you don't admit that both are true.
That's probably part of the reason people are pissed off about Chiru. The beginning was largely magic vs anti-magic, but it's also been stressed over and over to look at it through both sides. At first I found it difficult to understand and accept, but now I see how both are allowed to exist just fine and it helps me appreciate the story even more because of that.

I wonder if Ryukishi is going to explore such a thing even more for WTC5. He did pull off a lot of subversions in Umineko for those that already read Higurashi, which makes me curious if he'll repeat that for the next series. On one hand I'm dreading another complicated theme, but on the other hand I don't want him to be discouraged and hold himself back because that difficulty is still one of the charms of his work.

Yea I agree, but I don't know about saying that Umineko makes no sense if you don't admit that both are true. I mean, there is a lot of people who just stick with one of the options and still feel satisfied with the story. As I see it, anyone could simply not think much and just say that it was all a witch's work and a fun ride, others might choose the logic option and say that everything was an intelligent metaphor, so then there's three ways to undestand the story and it's perfectly fine whatever you choose.

Hopefully Ryukishi can do everything right again and success, but I'm already happy with Higu and Umi, like I don't need another WTC and that's why I'm not feeling the hype for this one, or maybe because I don't take it too seriously.

The issue with Ep 8, if you remove the noise about goats and author insulting its readers (which simply don't really happen in Ep 8), is that this episode is simply not as good as the others.

It is rushed. The first half is slow and boring. The second half is a rondo of meta fights without proper build-up, and without the deep meta meanings behind the meta fights present in the previous episode. The first half is all nothing happening - the second half is all nothing meaningful happening. It's visually impressive but without heart.

The manga is far better and should be considered the canon way to enjoy Ep 8. Ep 8 is just a failure. It tries to do everything simultaneously and ends boring, chaotic and senseless.

>Then why are they included at the end of Ep. 8 in the Golden Land?

They still need a witch's power to reify their form into something conceptually meaningful. Look at the big deal of having a witch inviting them somewhere and getting the senate's permission.

The way I see it, Will and Dlanor both platonically exists in Heaven as concepts, but need to be summoned by a higher power into any other gameboard/kakera. Which makes sense from a meta perspective: they are conceptually rules of stories. You need to allow them in your story before they can do anything.

Which poses several interesting questions if you follow it through. I think Will and Dlanor can be reified in several places simultaneously if they are summoned at the same time by several witches.

>> No.17482363

>>17481935
Your explanation makes sense and thinking about it, it doesn't really make sense for Will to be a Yasu created fantasy beings, since he first appears in Berns gameboard and has a referenced past and the first scene with the servants cannot be culprits thing. Same goes for Dlanor.

It's still weird that they stick around at the end though. Willard has a reason with Lion but Dlanor kinda fell out with Erika, who isn't even in there.

This 100%. I always disagree when people say to not read the manga right away because it ruins the mystery, IMO you should read the manga ASAP after the VN because Episode 8 feels so incomplete without it.

If I didn't read the manga Ep 7/8 after finishing the VN I doubt I would've been as much as an Umineko fan as I am now.

Okay, I finished reading Umineko yesterday and feel safe to step inside this thread. Even though Ep8 was kind of a mess, it was fucking amazing work of fiction overall, and ambiguity of the ending only enhanced its effect on me.

I have a question: what side content is worth of consumption? Manga is a must as I understand, what else? Is anime as bad as people say?

You should try the anime now that you finished the VN when you have some free time. If you're not one of those who gets easily offended by some silly decisions here and there (a considerable amount of content was cut in the animu) is not really so bad, like for someone who has no idea what to expect it could be entertaining and average.
When I was in sixth grade I had one friend who loved the anime (the same who recommended me Higu), she was obsessed for like a month and we both felt a little disappointed when I didn't like it as much as the other, didn't even finish it. I'm currently giving it another shot, and again it's not really that bad, but still forgettable. It depends of the person, I guess.
>>17481904
Well, I heard Ryukishi had some personal problems around that time, like the dead of one of his friends. I think it was his editor or something, not sure. The loss of a friend is a huge shock for everyone and it's understandable that this might have affect him and his inspiration to write. As difficult as might be to deliver an ending on those circumstances he still tried his best to appease his fans, and later he retouched it with the manga.
You don't have to forget that the author is a person as well.

>> No.17483780

>Well, I heard Ryukishi had some personal problems around that time, like the dead of one of his friends.
You mean BT? Yeah, that had a noticable impact on him. According to Ryukishi himself;

>He was not only my very best friend, but also my very first reader.
>I wrote both Higurashi and Umineko because I wanted to surprise him.

>During the several months that passed since that day.
>I forgot the joy of writing.

>However, I know better than anyone else that if I stop writing because of him, he would be the most sad.
>So I must write.
>But he will no longer read it.

>I think I'll use today as a chance to set my heart back to square one.
>No, perhaps it's just the same as always.
>I think I'll start writing again for him to read.

But they don't.

Willard goes back to wherever his home is (which, for a conceptual being, is not a trivial concept) with Lion. Dlanor goes back to Heaven. They don't stick around Rokkenjima's kakeras. Instead, they go on with their 'lives'.

When the Golden Land is destroyed, everyone fade to black except Will (and Lion), Dlanor, and her retinue.

That's why I like the characters so much. Yasu problems, physical and emotional, were very complex and he was a very very pitiful and sad figure that was impossible to not find just as tragic and likeable as the others, everyone has flaws and that why is so easy to love them.

Someone please explain the timeline of Ange Ushiromiya to me.
Like, in episode 4, we see that she jumped off of the building to join the fourth game with Bernkastel, but later we see her on Rokkenjima (before or after the building scene?). There, she uses the stakes to kill Kasumi and her agents(?) and that's it, iirc. And later in episode 6, she meets Ikuko sometime before leaving for Rokkenjima with Amakusa and she listens to Dawn...? So she continues on to the island, suspicious of Amakusa. And then in episode 7, we see her with Lion in the tea party at some point in her time. AND THEN in episode 8, we are presented with like fifty different timelines for Ange. So, she joined Battler for the 8th game, whatever. But when she reads Eva's diary that contains the truth, we're shown a scene alternate to the building part of episode 4 where she dies(?). She's revived in the golden land and then shit happens and she chooses between magic and trick. In magic, she goes on to create those children books and meets up with Battler again, but in the trick ending, she exposes Amakusa and shoots him and the owner of the boat, leaving her in the middle of the sea(?).
Please help
