I agree that LOLK was more memorable for sure. Only Seiraan and Ringo kind of get forgotten and even then Ringo has the MG MG thing. As silly as Clownpiece and Hecatia look they're really memorable and cute as fuck in the fairies manga. Doremy and Sagume are great designs and Doremy as a Baku is very fitting. I will say this is definitely one of the best Reimus ZUN has ever drawn. Expressive, cute, smug. She looks really good.

The art style in particular looks a little better than how plastic-y and stiff everyone looked in LOLK but I still preferred his traditional drawings.

I wanted ZUN to recycle the forgotten seasonal 2hus like the Akis in the extra and ending with a Yuuka fight, not recycle the bosses already in the game.

You can have these characters return and still have a game filled with newhus. As someone who wanted the seasonal characters in, I would have been disappointed if there weren't a bunch of newhus too, I think it's almost unanimous that part of the excitement of a new Touhou game is seeing new characters.

However having Stage 6 and Extra re-use the same characters without introducing someone new is the worst of both worlds.

The cast seems a bit the polar opposite from LoLK. The LoLK cast all felt gimmick'ish and not really fitting in the Touhou setting.
While this game they all feel extremely bland and forgettable.

I just think it was much more well done in LOLK where Hecatia's the real extra boss but Junko returns to fuck you up too. I did some digging, and basically the final boss is the official Guardian of Japanese Buddhism Matarajin.

He isn't actually the head god, he is the head guardian.

In fact, that's the common theme with all the bosses this game; they are all guardians, except for the two girls holding plants who are canonically Matarajin's personal servants in Buddhist lore.

Is he stronger than Hecatia? Not even close. An important figure in Japan, certainly, but he isn't even the one being worshipped in Enryaku-temple. He is just the guardian of the physical temple itself. Basically the head of mystical security. But since Enryaku-temple is basically the centre of Japanese Buddhism, it made Matarajin important.
