I think I blew an opportunity to go live in Tokyo, would have been good to put what I learned into practice.

So I fell for the Genki meme and this book doesn't teach you any of the kanji as they appear in the book. Is the best way to go about this pausing and learning the kanji as they appear, or now that I have the basics of grammar down, should I focus on studying kanji for a while before progressing further?

Seconding the Drama CD recommendation.
You're forced to follow the dialogue at the speed it's spoken, and there's no way for you to take a quick peek at the translations or answers.
To validate your understanding of the CD after listening, you can sometimes reference it to a source work and compare the written or drawn story to what you got out of your listen.

Plus, the soothing effect of a proper SoL Drama CD is a great match for shitty traffic. Days with better than usual traffic felt sometimes disappointing because I didn't have the time to finish the last chapter for the day.

Try restricting yourself to only looking things up once you've finished a sentence or a paragraph. Failing that, disable the extension while reading. Failing that, read on an application different than your browser, or better yet, read a hard copy.
Just keep in mind that the other extreme, which is reading without any lookups at all and blindly trusting your intepretation/brushing off words or sentences you don't understand, is also a bad way to go.

I'm level 60 on wanikani, it's not really been worth it.
Maybe it motivated me more because I paid money for it, but that's about it.

I mostly just skimmed over the mnemonics and they naturally left me after a couple of days for each kanji, so I'm not sure if the mnemonics had anything to do with me setting a basis to recall the kanji.

When I mine new kanji now it works just fine without thinking about radicals.

Guys, I need help. I've been reviewing kanji to keyword with the KKLC deck of the guide. But I recently discovered that doing so will fuck me over in the future.
Could you guys lead me to the light? Share a deck that can help me learn better?

The KKLC keywords are based on information in the Kodansha Kanji Dictionary by Jack Halpbern, so I wouldn't really worry about the keywords being incorrect. That's one of the advantages of KKLC over RTK is that it's much more current and better researched. RTK supposedly has some bad keywords but I haven't read enough about the subject to comment about what >>17430373 said.

Secondly, KKLC is for training your 外人 brain to recognize and retain kanji by thinking about them as combinations of graphemes/radicals. That way you can retain the kanji through mnemonics that use those radicals. For me so far it has made it a lot easier to recognize kanji in my reading, especially when you get to the point that you know a lot of similar looking kanji. If you do it in moderation along with studying vocab and reading, I think it's a good learning aid.

How are you studying it? Do you write down words a few times as you go? That helps add a little bit of context, especially if you are already familiar with the word. If you can't reproduce the kanji based on the keyword, you might not have practiced writing enough. After a certain amount of time the stroke order begins to feel completely natural and writing kanji becomes very easy.

Last of all, take it easy on yourself. Just the fact that you're studying is good. Japanese is a very difficult language, but with effort you will get there.

If you're not using the book, then yes, you don't have the appropriate information. It's in the guide resource list under Kanji. Read the introduction to the book (which is pretty long), and the method should become a lot more clear. I recommend doing like 5-10 new kanji a day, that way you'll make it through the entire book in about a year's time. Or you might decide you've gained enough from it and aren't interested in continuing with the book.

Every Single Last Person I know who used RTK has used it for far too long. I actually do not know a single person who used RTK who used it for less than a year. Meanwhile, they studied basically fuckall outside the most basic of the basic grammar, with zero reading and very little vocabulary acquisition.

I do not know a single person who recommends RTK that is neither a vlogger living in Japan nor a member of what is basically the mimetic RTK cult. There are zero theoretical or empirical arguments in favor of RTK compared to the other kanji resources that came out Right After it, or Even Before It, which are so much better that it's not even funny.

But that's not what happened anon. The basic idea behind RTK (associating kanji forms with meanings to improve retention and comprehension) is sound. What was retarded about RTK was its execution.
Heisig encouraged learning ALL the kanji before doing any other study, which is fucking retarded. Then he has a second RTK volume to teach you his partially-accurate, fully-autistic methods for memorizing readings.

RTK is good at what it's trying to do (teaching you how to remember and distinguish kanji by giving each of them a unique name). You can go through it relatively quickly (~3 months) and then start actually learning japanese without being afraid of kanji.
RTK is not good at what people think it does (teaching you japanese). Some people try it, find out they still can't read any japanese after going at it for a while and angrily quit. Other try to fix it by changing the cards to include vocab and are basically creating their own (probably inferior) learning material that isn't actually RTK anymore while massively increasing the amount of time it takes them to go though it. Then they all blame RTK for being bad at teaching japanese.

If you understand what RTK is trying to do and don't waste too much time on it, it can be useful. It's definitely not necessary to learn japanese though.

If you tell yourself that as reading becomes easier you will do it more because it will be effortless

I'm trying to use the RTK Deck from the DJT Cornocopia of Resources, but I've got some weird issues - specifically when importing it, the first card is always "Sparkle" instead of "one", and I don't know how screwed up the rest of the 2200 card ordering is.

I was trying to start again with the RTK since I had left it for so long building on stories wouldn't make sense, so I tried a plugin command to reset my deck progress. This fucked my deck entirely, so I deleted it (and then the plugin), and eventually found the Coronocopia version and got that.

Installing the Cornocopia RTK deck leads to weird behaviour though. I do have it set to "Show New Cards in Order Added", so that's taken care of, but when I go to study the deck, the first card is "Sparkle".

I've used the Browse button to open the deck listing, and the card's Sort order is OK. Going down the list it seems that when browsing them one by one using the sort order, everything is in RTK order as far as I can see.

However, it seems to have assigned the first 21 cards a Due value between 2200 and 2220. Thus the start stuff seems to have been put at the end for some reason?

I'm not sure whether the DJT apkg file is screwed, or whether I'm doing something wrong, or something even more exotic is happening.

Anyone have any ideas on what is happening or what to do? I just want to learn things in order.

Yes. Download the resource you are using and read from it. Better yet just skip RTK and download KKLC from the guide. Read the introduction which explains the mnemonic system. If you're not using the mnemonics you're better off just memorizing vocab. That's not what makes Kanji easy to remember/recognize, what makes them easy to recognize is breaking them down into components (primitives, radicals, etc) and creating vivid stories that relate those components to the whole to match it back up with the keyword.
It seems like if someone just downloads the deck, they won't be coming up with the memory aids and are just brute forcing a useless keyword onto a kanji. If that's what people are doing, no wonder they hate it.
I went through RTK in around 2 months 2 years ago and I felt that it helped me instantly recognize kanji while coming across them on vocabulary cards. In my case, I used the koohii forums to help come up with stories and alternate keywords.
After finishing RTK and starting vocob I just let my RTK deck slide by never clicking 'again' unless I didn't recognize the kanji at all which almost never happens.

Hello guys, I wondered if anyone else is experiencing this. Basically my quality of sleep has severely decreased a couple months after I started learning Japanese. It seems like I am in a state of constant restlessness during the time I am supposed to sleep, it's similar to dreaming just without the rest. Basically my mind is stuck in a constant state of reviews that just never seem to end. Usually I do manage to get like 3 hours of proper sleep per night but I wish I could just use all of my sleeping time efficiently rather than turning and sweating and panicking over failed reviews coming back over and over again. Even though I should know those reviews aren't real I feel like I am in a state where my mind is being prevented from really shutting down because it thinks "I can't sleep until I get those reviews done" but it just never happens. The next day I usually get retentions consistently over 90% so those head reviews may actually be doing something but I'd rather sleep properly, anyone know what I mean?

Doesn't everyone have a phone these days? Just Anki on your phone even if you don't use it. It's already close to impossible to lose your files because it does a shitton of backups on its own. Even if your entire hard drive dies, if you synced your data you get it right back from Ankiweb. Now let's say you're an honest to god pants shitting retard and actually managed to sync your broken collection (even though it asks every time once you make any major changes) AND fuck up your hard drive, if you have a second device you can just have it upload to Ankiweb and your entire data is restored again. Unless you're actively trying to purge all your data I really don't see how it's even remotely possible to do.

So this has happened where when I had to restore my data due to some corruption, the due dates for all reviewed cards in my decks inexplicably jumped several years. Is there a way of reversing this, or do I have to reset all of my decks somehow?

I learned katakana through the combination of that and nukemarine's remembering the kana video series and thought that it was significantly faster
But imo using anki deck instead of kanatown would be even faster than that

fucked up my inputs on my anki imports and now the front of the flash card has furigana. is there an easy way to edit all of them to delete that but keep it on the backside?

i think it helps me immeasurably. but some people think cucumbers taste better pickled. I do a "custom study" on my anki decks a few times a week where I'll not look at the screen until i've pressed space, and remembered/guessed based on hearing the word. things like 好き/ 空き　fuck me up, but it helps me to remember the homonyms. try it and see if it helps after a week or so

so I finished reading up Tae Kim's grammar guide the other day. I liked reading it during downtime at work cause the lessons were very short & simple so I could read through them fast. Is there anything similar that I could read for my downtime at work? I could probably just read nhk easy articles since those are short, but more grammar resources would be nice too

The rikai phone app has an option to add words to a text file, after you can transfer the file to your PC and add those words to anki.
I think it also has an option to add it directly to your anki app but I never really wanted to experiment with it.
