Not sure about working for Japanese firms/government but if you can get a job working for the DoD then you are probably looking at something around $70K for a lower level systems admin position. If you have extensive experience or certs then you can probably swing something closer to $90K. I work with a guy that has been in Tokyo since the early 90s working as a contractor. Story time:

I went to Japan multiple times before moving there and ended up lasting only 3 weeks. Popped my cherry to a married woman in a love hotel there too. I had everything in place and planned this shit for years. I had 2 really good male friends there who I thought would help me out and I had dates and girls all ready to go.

2 years before I move there I find a Japanese gf. Cute, good english speaker, etc. I visit her, then she comes to meet me in my country. I fuck the married woman the same day I meet her officially in person.

1 year before I get to Japan, my Japanese/Korean gf goes to Korea. She decides "Korea is my home and I want to live there now", after never having been there previously. She wants to end it as waiting for me for 1 year is just too tough, but I convince her to hold on.

9 months before, she dumps me the same week my fwb/best female friend dumps me for a korean dude. I'm finishing grad school to go japan and it's a fucking disaster, but I make it through. It was absolute hell and I did nothing but school for a year. I hated everyone in my class too and I was the only non-jew, so that turned into a problem. Can't stand jews now.

I got a shitty eikawa job to get to Japan, but I had to be a dumbfuck and had to go.

I get there and immediately my two friends are like "hey, I'm too busy this month, see you next month". So I'm like WTF did I even come here for.

I immediately see the writing on the wall - shitty job, shitty friends and I'm panicking. Also got extremely homesick.

I went on 7 dates in 2-3 weeks. 1 fails in an only in Japan situation. 1 goes well, but the girl doesn't want me anymore when she finds out I'm leaving. Repeat this 2-3 more times. Married woman gets pissed I'm going back home and refuses to meet me. One hot girl I like is late for our date and she isn't hungry to go to dinner after I didn't eat all day. I was pissed and she sucked anyway. Another one is incredibly shy and ain't into me in person. I end up getting with a 45 year old milf. She's tall, thin and she sucks at sex, but hey atleast shes giving it up. She gets her period and there's blood all over the place and that kills my mood. I actually spent the last week with her and it was a nice relationship. She recovers from her period as I'm going home. Everything is good for 2 months, then she finds 2 bf's at the same time then stops talking to me.

My best japanese friend gets pissed when I tell him I can't deal with Japanese people and never talks to me again. Had I not gone, I wouldn't have figured out my japanese friend was unreliable. My other friend there later turned out to be 2 years after. These people used to do favors for me all the time, they bought me shit, I had hung out with them multiple times and talked with them everyday.

I had some fun, but you can only have so much fun in Japan when you are on a limited budget. Japanese TV was awful. My phone situation was fucked up as I used a cheapskate refillable phone and people had to call me, I couldn't really call them. Tried to get an iphone but the only plans they offered were x minutes/data from 11am-9pm or 9pm-11am while in the US, I'm on unlimited 24/7. No car there because I wouldn't be able to afford it. I have a car here.

I do believe I squandered it and I did admit to doing so. I think I should have stuck out the year. I think it would have been a struggle, but I think I would have had some awesome only-in-Japan experiences. I will regret that for a long time but I play the lottery and if I ever hit, I'll be able to do it my way.

I'm doing good. Donald Trump is the President. My job pays better than average, but I don't make that much. I get 3 days off a week. I take no work home, there's no working overtime and my pay check is guaranteed and my job is extremely easy and hard to get fired from. I also can sleep til 11AM everyday if I choose. I own a house and I have a car and an iphone. I don't think I can do even half of this in Japan unless I hit the lottery.

On the girls side, things will always be good because I have options. I have the power to say no. I have the power to bail on someone who isn't playing ball. I have the power to pull my weight around if I need to. I have girls of all weights, shapes, sizes and relationship statues though they are all Asian because that's what I'm into. I have no less than 8 girls now who want to marry me and have my kids if I so choose. I'm in no rush to get married because I know 20 year old girls who will marry guys who are 60.

Japan is still this mythical place to me though. I feel no matter what you are in Japan, you can probably find a whole group of people are similar. I feel like you can do anything in Japan if you have money. I feel like Japan has a lot of things that can only work in Japan and nowhere else. But I also think it can be a brutal, downright retarded, stubborn, backwards and mind-numbing place at times.

I've been in Japan a little over three years, after only having worked a year - I was an illegal alien sleeping in my girlfriend's apartment and watching anime for about a year and a half, before landing my current job at $30/hour right before my visa would have ran out.

Tokyo's alright, but I was definitely happier, and had more friends, in the countryside.
