Windows 10? Use virtual machine and run those shit on windows 7, otherwise, save often, don't skip unless it's necessary, and pray. If it's on RUGP 5.x something, the crash is still manageable. If older like RUGP 4.x like KimiNozo fandisc, tough luck, it'll crash after like 7 dialouges or so. I only get through because I really want to see Takayuki's voice in the fandisc and have to save after every 3 dialogues.

If you fall asleep in Newton, you should stop playing VN. What that game does in its ~1mb most other writers would easily pad out to 2.5. Plus, the game even has better comedy than most VN out there as well. It's just not a moege, although I'm pretty sure a lot expected it to be one.

Have fun playing your 5 VNs then.

In all honesty, Newton isn't perfect. But it's not as bad as some people make it out to be. For example people complain about the lack of moege esque elements. But I think that's fine. Not all games need hours of needless dates and flirting. The side-routes aren't that great if you look for romance, but they can be fun little what-if stories. They are better than what you find in Leyline and it's not like people downvoted that one so heavily because the side-routes weren't that hot.
They do make the main-romance feel more shallow though, as the game just isn't long and doesn't really look too much into how/why the characters start liking each other. This would be less of an issue if the side-routes wouldn't exist as Alice DOES change over the course of the game in preparation for her route, it's just easy to forget. It really feels weird. However, seeing how this is even a thing in many romance focused moege (no sign for attraction in common from protag, enter route -> damn I LOVE HER), it's hard for me to be too mad about it in a game that's not focused on that stuff at all. It's a negative point, but not a deal-breaker.

Then there's the science part. Some complaints are somewhat valid (i.e. the protag), but I feel like the people have a rather weird concept of what sci-fi is. It's fiction. As long as something abides to its own rules, it's valid. And I thought a bit about some of its established stuff and it seems to be mostly alright. It gives the typical question of "what was first, the egg or the chicken", but that's a typical issue with time-travel. They are pretty much all somewhat flawed by design as time-travel itself makes not much sense.
The concept that we have about it is "needs a ton of energy". The author solves this with an impossible material to theoretically infinitely boost an energy-source with light reflection. It doesn't exist, duh. It makes no sense, duh. But it does its job. And, we always have to keep in mind: The very fact our universe exists makes no sense (to us). We have energy. There had to be a time without any energy before. So energy was created from nothing in some way.
There are a bunch of convenient things going on, but there should not be any BIG blunders, unless I missed something. One guy at EGS was raging quite a bit, but most of what he wrote there was nonsense. It felt like serious nitpicking. For example a heroine doing a part-time job to save for going back to Japan and whatnot, but he forgot that she worked WAY before the story started (potentially years given her age..) and she was only looking for a new job, as her old one ended. Stuff like that.

I dunno. The game wasn't what people expected. But that doesn't make it bad. And even if there are some issues with the time-travel, has that stopped Steins;Gate? Nah. This game may not be for everyone, but I'm not really seeing this as a mediocre game. Although I admit, I'm generally not that mainstream with my taste. That said, Newton isn't simply a meh game, it's a polarizing game.

Anyone playing Biman4? I started for the fap, but got hit with the feels and depressing story. Getting pretty dark after the reverse rape scene which I should have expected seeing as it is a trap game and it really feels bad with the MC becoming traumatized and contemplating to end it. The oneechan is amazing though, the animated kissing scene was pretty hot. Tempted to ctrl through just for her, but the story has been fairly interesting so far.

Sometimes there's BGM sample clips as videos or downloadable on official websites. Dei Gratia or the never to be released Shoujobyou come to mind, though it seems the latter's site just returns an error now.

>defending

I just feel a lot look at EGS and are like "yep, sucks", and that's unfortunate. There aren't a lot of works like it out there and I'd definitely like more. Though I know that especially in Japan it's not that favored what the game does. Its very high pacing is definitely very weird in the medium as well.

Also what would you defend if not what you like? I'm fairly open minded, but seeing how a lot of the negative points people have are either wrong, because the person overlooked stuff, or just "this isn't a moege", I'm simply not agreeing with that. But I'll keep it at this. I think I wrote enough about where I stand in regards to the game. And I'll also say this: I too expected something totally different from a game with cute art, time-travel and a freakin' gender-bent Newton. So I'm not saying, that the score is entirely undeserved, as the game is a bit misleading. But in part that is the fault of "eroge-expectations".

Yeah, she's easily become one of my favorite VAs by now.

Her being in Himawari and Island as well actually reminded me about (Himawari spoilers) Aqua After being strangely absent from the main game's all-ages remake despite it being a vital part of the main story, and I remember discussing with people here that it's probably because it couldn't be included in an all-ages remake due to its content even if it's technically non-sexual, but if something as hard as Kikokugai with actual obscene content that's integral to main plot gets a pass into all-ages there's no reason it couldn't have either. Aqua After was still fantastic but I would've preferred to experience it with voice acting and new art like the main game.

Koiiro is fun and funny, drags a bit with a colossal common route and some dumb dorama but has some great friend group dynamics to make up for it.

But honestly, if you want actual genuine magical girl, watch anime or read manga. VNs are terrible with it. All-ages could work, but I don't think there's much outside of maybe some obscure doujin game like... Mahou Shoujo... heh. Not like that's a super nice game, but at least it should be fairly genuine Mahou Shoujo without cramming in some weird male MC for the self-insert penis. (or alternatively monster rape)

It does not imply this. I don't know where you see that.

Regardless of what he wrote being right or wrong, his complaint was that most good VNs are monotone "sobby" in terms of atmosphere and offer a few jokes here and there to brighten things up a bit. He did never say that this ACTUALLY makes them good. In fact his whole point was, that those "good VNs" with those components aren't even that good.

I honestly haven't read much of the very highly acclaimed stuff like White Album 2 or whatever, so I can't talk too much about the absolute "top", but those kind of works do very much exist. A lot. And I don't personally mind. I'm a massive Inganock fan for example, and that easily falls into this pattern. A solemn world, steampunk, kids with diseases eating at their body that's half metal already, plenty of insane people around... the brightest moments are still just a minor thing to show that there's still warmth even in that kind of world. And a joke or two is certainly in there as well... I doubt there's a single VN that's able to not have a single funny moment of sorts. In this game Kia is the biggest factor that can lead to that. Mostly how she sometimes handles Gii and Ati. Something like White Album 2 (relationship drama) still has a much different "sobby" atmosphere as well. But they are plenty around. Not for everyone around, but I see no problem with that statement. But I guess he simply likes things more colorful with more different kinds of scenes and emotions.

Well everyone has their own tastes, personally I'm a huge fan of them and spent something like $700-800 for their products, probably will continue to do it as well.

What I like from them is, the relationship between characters and MC is not something like 1:1, they are pretty much a huge family with MC being at the middle of it. Those characters have their own relationships between them, after playing their games to the some point you are realizing that how those characters ,who were stranger to the each other at the start of the game, have slowly become to something like family while you're playing the game. Baseson is doing such a great job at this, there isn't a big event which makes everyone suddenly friends and gain absolute trust from each other, they're building this up slowly while you are playing the game.

I'm not sure if I could explain this correctly since its kinda hard to put into words, but in short just as >>17423930 said baseson games are exception for me as well.

Yeah, definitely so. Hell actually I was expecting them to go bankrupt from that series, but somehow they got pulled themselves together with sengoku koihime.

Speaking of sengoku koihime, its main writer K. Baggio has said that they will announce a new game at 2018. He didnt say anything about the game so we dont know if its another huge cast koihime series or some other type thing, but since he is not working on Kakumei anyway I'm expecting another huge-cast game from him.

The voices could be better (not like they are bad, but still) and the distribution of scenes is a bit weird and it tries a bit too much "a little bit for everyone". In the Alice Soft thread there's also someone complaining about the rape on defeat scenes not being the best and always stopping when things get good. It's essentially the result of them not really focusing on anything.
So essentially you have not enough variety on "nice" ero training (at least for quite a while), while the not so nice rape parts seem to not necessarily be satisfying for those who like that stuff, as the whole thing still has to co-exist with the nicer parts.

It's not terrible or anything, but while the gameplay is simple but works, the porn could definitely see some work. Btw., I'm playing the game with "no defeats", which is obviously a large part of why it's nice in the first place. Getting raped is easy mode. That's obviously not particularly engaging. I'd generally recommend to get the rape stuff in the second or later play-through, if one is interested in the gameplay. That said, everyone CAN beat the game, as long as you are willing to let the girls get raped (or you like that anyway).

Finished Re;Lord chapter 3. I definitely liked it more than the other 2 chapters, it had the same fun game play and a more impactful story, but at the same time I'm not super satisfied with the ending.
The game play builds off the other two, adding in a couple new mechanics which are nice, just attack with the various follower bonuses is cool. In general it's a sequel to the game play of the previous ones, taking most of the features and adding on some new ones. I always enjoyed the strip battles and the quick feel to the game play.
The biggest change is definitely the story though, it really comes to a head and the final chapter is pretty damn exciting, but I feel like the characters and their interactions weren't quite as strong. What happened to Iris was pretty rough, but at the same time her almost edgy, for lack of a better word, personality was really grating. Likewise I felt the prince as an antagonist was lacking, not really having much agency in the story until the final chapter where it picks up. Whereas the first two games felt more character driven, this one is a lot more story and plot focused.
The ending definitely leaves me with mixed feelings. I like the whole concept around predetermination and the effect of the witches on the story, but at the same time I really wish it had been wrapped up better and didn't lead into a sequel. I didn't hate the ending, I just can't shake the feeling of a sequel-baiting ending. In no way am I rejecting or angry about the way everything transpired, but at the same time it's just a little off putting.
Overall I'm looking forward to what's next in the series, I especially like Ria's developments. Plus there aren't nearly enough stripping based games.

As an aside, listening to the cast comments while writing this makes me wish more companies did these extra parts.

Remember eroge takes a lot longer to consume than other forms of entertainment. So if people are playing your old games for cheap there's a good chance they're doing that instead of your new games, undercutting yourself. Plus you can get games much cheaper second-hand, which means the niche of a way to get eroge cheaply is already filled, you're better off going for a convenience/supporting the devs angle. And then there's the simple reason that people have tried having sales on old games and found the increase in sales was really not enough to justify it.

Conventional economics of selling cheaply to as many as people as possible doesn't apply to something like eroge, due to the small but devoted market.

It has been already said, but you get all the information you need. As soon as you see the boss, you know their stats and weaknesses giving you plenty time to prepare your own stats and abilities. If you want to see their moves, there's a super cheap magic you can use. But I have yet to need it. Abusing weaknesses is so far the way to go for an easy victory if you train efficiently. But, I'm a major Atelier fan and I'm used to time management. It's part what makes the game fun to me.
A nice little addition is that you can see exact unlock conditions now, though I feel they could've written them into the training menu as well. Helps with the planning.

Most are 720p still, though you occasionally see a 1440p title (mostly by light).

>> No.17432073

>>17431989

A 1080p screen can display 720p games without problems... usually. Unless it's crap.

Some games have good enough art assets for you to not do anything, but that's rare. As rare as having a bicubic filter in 720p titles, which also allows you to scale very well to 1080p. You generally have to look into specific engine settings or whatever for that though and is up to the dev, even if the engine supports it theoretically. (This months Golden Hour, Aoiro Note and Hatsujou Sprinkle all share the same engine, but only Aoiro Note from ad:lib offers bicubic)
Some games also allow you to have your screen automatically switch to the game's resolution in full screen. This is the default setting in the engine just mentioned, though for my 1080p screen that doesn't work well with Golden Hour and its weird native resolution. Luckily it's big enough so even bilinear filtering is fine and I don't need that. For 720p stuff it works and looks fairly close to bicubic filtering, but it DOES depend on the screen. I have no idea how much difference there is with how screens display lower than native resolution though.

Finally there are plenty of engines and as such games that don't really do any of this. They only have a very cheap default upscaling filter that anyone can use (and is often default in games that offer more as well), that is just horrible for 720p->1080p. Here you need to lower your screen's resolution yourself. It's annoying, but it IS possible if you really don't like the window idea.

Note that sometimes just testing fullscreen can also surprise. Alice Soft's newest title for example looks just fine in 1080p without changes. So it upscales fairly good by default, which is unfortunately really rare and I wouldn't be surprised if enough people play games in just not ideal ways because they never touch the major scaling options, even if they are there.

You might be in the wrong medium for that kind of thing.

Unmei Yohou has something like that, the main character has some degree of self-awareness towards his situation (loser with no friends). He goes through some shit and comes out a better person on the other side in a way that might be up your alley.

It's also kinda unpolished and the side routes are hit or miss. But if you've got tolerance for rough gems you might try it.

okay, no. It's really mostly just a token phase, as these games are usually about cute girls and if you remove them, nothing is left. Thank you, I appreciate you taking the time to respond to my question. My apologies that it's a question that has already been asked before. I skimmed the archive and when I found posts similar to mine with people asking for more mature characters, they were generally recommended Muramasa or something that was a bit less grounded in reality than I was looking for. The closest thing I have to an example of what I'm looking for are two stories by Hayakari Takeshi: Gunjou no Sora o Koete and Koi de wa Naku - It's not Love, but so Where Near.

I was interested in going through Island by the same author at some point in the future, so I'll move Himawari to the top of my queue. I know it's considered a classic around here, but I haven't gotten around to playing it as I just got back in to the medium a couple of weeks ago. Thanks!

You're probably right. I come from a literary background but I can't resist the format of the visual novel. I can't really describe it all that well but it just feels nostalgic to me. The sort of choose your own adventure branching narrative, seeing how different characters act when you're not on their path, the combination of visuals and music; it all feels very "comfy" to me, for lack of a better word.
Thank you for your recommendation. I haven't heard of the writer or the studio before. Out of curiosity I looked at what else the writer has done and I saw he recently worked on one called Suisou Ginka no Istoria. I feel you on that at least, I've got a fair chunk of literary background myself and though I know it'll rarely if ever happen, a mix of the two worlds would be everything I've wanted in fiction.

Istoria is a bit more drama, bordering on melodrama, but still has an interesting, conflicted protagonist. The writer's pretty good at writing MCs, one of the reasons I like him so much. They've got that bit of self-awareness that makes the teenage angst and fuckups so much more bearable.

But yeah if you like one, you'll like the other stuff he's done. If you don't, you probably won't like any.

Beat Hyakki Ryouran the first time. Pretty much entirely linear with the exception of the end, which had two short fate/stay night esque choices they probably should've left away. I especially liked the first, where no matter what you choose, the protag does the exact same, but simply gets killed in one case. Pic related is also resulting into the same thing, but what would be the safer one is ultimately another "bad ending". It'd actually be no problem if the choices just didn't exist, as what happens in the correct choices makes sense.

Anyway. It's a fun setup. You get thrown into something, you get your goal and after that it's probably working towards that goal. The nice thing is how you really don't know much of everything after playthrough one. You experience a lot, but why that happens or character backgrounds and so on aren't really given. You get the surface. Everything seems messed up by the end, as expected, but there's a good amount to find out I feel. Probably fairly important to bring this to an actually "good" ending. In other words, it's not just enforced for the lulz.

While that's all nice, the writing is unfortunately fairly low tier. All the typical crappy narration issues you'll get here. Repeats of whatever a character said, explanations for everything every single time, so the reader definitely understands, and sometimes even circling narration where the protagonist is thinking about the same question 2 lines later again, in case the reader already forgot what's currently the topic/question.
Speaking of the protag, he feels fairly inconsistent with some actions. But that just goes back to the writing. Some parts are generally just weird as fuck. It's not too important, but you'll laugh a few times for absolutely absurd reactions or simple things happening. For that reason as well, sometimes the protag also feels like an utter dunce. He'll get eventually there, but I feel the writer(s) really felt like padding the narration a lot. So sometimes it starts REALLY far away from the goal, at a point, nobody normal would ever start.

Other than that, atmospheric music and a fairly high amount of ero-scenes, but they are comparatively short. Some are even more "plot" then anything else. So 12 1cg scenes (11 hcg total) within ~450kb isn't too much. Even moege.. tend to have more, or at least longer scenes so it feels more. Will probably change, unless the game is ~2.6mb. (the 12 scenes are 17%)
I'll continue this. The main girl really seems worth getting outa there. The writing is unfortunate, but I got used to it already and while it can be a bit annoying, I've seen even worse... not that that's an excuse.

It's not sequels, but just a rough series, not even really official either. The biggest connection seems to be somewhat similar themes and the same artist. The first one is by a completely different publisher as well, so it can't even be an official series.

霧谷伯爵家の六姉妹 was already named, the other is 聖エステラ学院の七人の魔女 .

But to give you an honest reply, you think really hard about the sentence you can't understand. >what should I do in that case?
If you can't understand the sentence: try breaking it down to particles and words and translate them accordingly. Consult the COR if you don't know / forget what a certain particle does. Use Wiktionary or Jisho for words you don't understand. If you like wasting a couple of minutes every day - mine them and create your own Anki deck. If you have troubles disassembling a sentence - try Jisho (but only if you fail yourself or want to check your guess! Don't rely on it!). If you don't understand some slang term or some weird dialect - ask DJT, there's always at least one competent person or you could try figuring it out yourself (if you do know basic Japanese, I guess it wouldn't be a problem for you to look elsewhere).

And read. Read a lot. Your brain is gonna pick up certain patterns and in no time you'll be thinking "where did I heard it?" instead of "what does it mean?". That's how you pick up a language.

At least that's what I did to read webm related.

christ, you could do a lot of fun with stuff like timed choices, but I've only ever seen it happen once and that was a serious moment.

I'm finding that Keifa's hatred of Kazuto is getting worse and worse and instead of fixing it via actual character development they decided to just give that to Eika instead. Not that I'm complaining Eika is a much more likeable character

Pretty sure the last is the desired choice. Even the seiya walkthrough points you to it.

But yeah, joke choices aren't too common. Akatsuki no Goei had a bunch of fun ones, I still remember those. Like "knock on the door" vs. "lick the door". Some would also randomly game-over you.

>I can read porn
>that makes me superior
VN fags are fucking insufferable. You don't get to look down on anyone when all you can read is shitty porn games written by amateur writers, for teenagers to masturbate to. You faggots need to stop posting your visual novel shit in the Daily Japanese thread.

Why are there still VNs being released that neither support resolutions higher than 720 nor borderless fullscreen? The old switch your resolution fullscreen is just so annoying.

Most people play in windowed mode.

Are you sure, you can't change that? I don't even remember a relatively new VN that had a forced normal fullscreen, though I don't really care about low budget nukige and whatnot.

That said, if you have a 1080p screen, you probably don't even want borderless fullscreen in most cases. It's way worse than fullscreen, as most VNs only use bilinear scaling. Bad bilinear scaling at that. You need at least bicubic, but that's about as rare as 1080p and needs to usually be manually chosen.

You can play 1080p games comfortably in windowed mode if you have a good screen

Anyone else can't get off to ero scenes in eroge?

Like I can recognize it as "hot" and I even get baited into playing games by HCG and cute art occasionally, but it's never all that titillating when it's time to beat the meat. I can do it, but it doesn't feel as stimulating as doing it to ero-manga or JAV. I guess it's because I respond more to visual input rather than voice/text and ero scenes usually only have 1-3 static pictures.

I think you'll find a bunch of people who are similar to that here, myself included. I can get off to nukige that tailor very specifically to my fetishes, but anything else I simply don't even try to get off to. For moege and the like its more about the chase, as well as seeing cute girls that I like happy. 99% of eroge I play I don't ever play with the intention to fap to.

I wish I was you.
I'm still in the process of learning Japanese and while reading eroge I often have to stop to fap cause I can't concentrate on reading anymore.

The scenes usually come when I'm not in the mood or when I had already fapped to the last scene and am not ready again (though I guess that still falls under the "not in the mood" category). That and the scenes usually aren't as good as some nukige and have less visual stimulation/variation than something like manga.

As a result, anything more than 2-3 H scenes per moderately sized route in a non-nukige tends to put a major hamper on the experience for me, because I'd rather that time and CG work be put towards something else.

>> No.17440301

>>17439787
I can't. I prefer a more visual medium like manga.
I miss when games used to have 2-3 short scenes per heroine, just to summate the MC and heroine's relationship rather than be used for long-term fapping purposes.

I personally love manga as it skips unecessary dialogue and wording that could be visual represented. It also makes it so I don't have to hold CTRL during boring bit and miss out on anything, I can easily grasp the situation when I skim. My only issue if the lack of color and voices.
However the number of art and variety makes up for it and some adds to the imagination.

I can fap to manga aanyday but not so much for VNs and anime.
