If you start early, you don't have to have 3 scenes within one hour. Though I still think, devs should use the omake idea a bit more. If you have a story structure where 80% of a route can't have ero, just put 80% of the scenes as extra. Or alternatively have one enforced first time and one more, where the player can choose the position/situation and the rest is automatically unlocked as well in the scenes menu. Actually, a little more freedom and choice in h-scenes would generally be nice. Weird how that's almost never done. If the game is a little more casual, it could work. Of course if it's ultimately trying to act all "YOU ARE THE ONLY ONE IN MY LIIIIIIIFE", then it's probably just cringe. And as little romance as Newton had, the ending was already somewhat wonky just because the other branches of the game exist. Of course I'd assume that writer isn't doing the main-stuff anyway, which could, funny enough, end up being the better part of the game if you like his comedy and bitter-sweet stuff. Newton was really good with its two enforced routes there. Probably too good, so people who played it for moege feelings were most likely not very happy.

Done with the ohoho route. I was entertained. I liked, that it didn't bother much more with the fashion details, though the final part was a little too similar to the Luna route. I guess you need a climax of sorts, but due to the similarity (vs. Ion), but at the same time less focus, it felt much worse than in Luna's route.
In Luna's route it felt like a real final boss of sorts with a good amount of presence and whatnot. But here it was just.. there. It felt it was only there to actually be there. And in exchange the Luna thing wasn't that fleshed out either. The writer probably should've just concentrated on the relationship with Luna and left out the Ion stuff.

Well, it was still good and not really worse than Luna's route, as that one had its own share of weaknesses. While I was at it, I also played the bad ending, but that was fairly whatever. I thought it'd build more of a bridge to the spinoff, but I guess not. I doubt I'll play the routes of Mizuho and Minato, but I might check out the spinoff. What little screentime she may've had, Resona was fun. Even though she is a little sister and I don't really like little sisters most of the time.

It's not three, reread what he wrote. There's a third writer but he didn't mention him writing a route, only Nijima. Probably just writing parts of the common route and maybe helping out in the routes here and there (perhaps even hired to write H-scenes only).

FYI Subahibi had 3 sub writers and none of them were even close to the level of Nijima. Rins route by Scaji wasn't great either. Really, none of the news are unexpected or something that should trigger pessimism until we actually see the results. In fact I got more hope in the project after seeing who the sub writer was, could have ended a lot of worse.

You have a really twisted image of how games are written. Here's a hint: The parts you dislike about the route are probably outlined by Scaji.

It was also completely expected, so I'm not sure why you're so surprised about it. Again, nothing shown makes it look like the routes are gonna be bad so far (nor any proof that if Scaji wrote them himself that they'd be any better which I think is where your belief is mistakenly fixed upon). Shorter overall length + Nijima being decent at least gives good hope of them being better than the ones in the prequel, if not ending up as straight up enjoyable routes by themselves. He clearly doesn't deem it necessary to write them himself and thinks it's fine if he only provides the outlines to his ideas that they will be filled out satisfactory for the rest of the plot to work, and I trust him with that judgment.

For a bit, I honestly thought this game was actually going to redeem itself with the true route after Chihiro's being almost good, but nope, boring through and through and I found Ema to get more and more unlikeable the more I went through it for some reason, I guess she just got on my nerves.
At least Chihiro was a neat character and has presence throughout, which i a plus, but I wouldn't say this game was good. Also kinda disappointed it didn't get super crazy or something like ashisho, even the super heartwarming ending was rather meh.

The author may still somehow create a decent second game, but it's fairly obvious that it was never planned before and that will most likely result in some not so good things. Sono Hana in general is for people who are massive yuri fans. You have to be able to ignore a LOT just for the yuri. New Gen literally tries to pull a "plot" of a rich girl meeting a common girl. A rich girl would obviously not be allowed to just date a commoner and so on and so forth. But series typically it is not allowed for yuri to be strange in any way. It needs to be the most normal thing in the world. Also males are not allowed. I don't think I need to tell you how fucking awful the resulting double standard is.
Also that game had a million h-scenes with shitty art, where each scene is 20 lines long (no joke!). Aka ero sucks, even though it's supposed to be one of the big selling things. That's also pretty constant over the series.

What's left? Yuri. If you can ignore everything for yuri, it's... okay. It does have pretty good voice-acting and some scenes are fairly cute. You can't pair girls though, so you have to take what you get. If your favorite girl is with an annoying girl, sucks for you. Of course yuri is more about pairs, but half of a pair being shit is much worse than having a bland protag in a straight eroge. After all the focus isn't so one-sided on the "good girl". (though bland protags are usually fairly shitty as well already, so one should be easily able to imagine how a yuri couple is with one of the girls being terrible/annoying/whatever)
Hanahira should be no different there. I haven't played it, though I've not heard a lot of positive about it, even from series fans. Then again.. series fans. That already says a lot in itself. It's short. The worst that could happen is that you waste an afternoon on chibis.

It's a vicious cycle. It's very hard for yuri VNs to attract an audience, because most of them are super low budget, short and not really worth their price. (includes Sono Hana)
Sono Hana lives because the company did a lot of extra stuff. Radio shows for example. It started doujin and tried to fill a little void in some way, from fans for fans I guess? It never wanted to be more than "just yuri", and simply didn't have the means to do more than a 3 hour game. And even nowadays they still don't have the means to do a real normal full length game, even if they wanted. The very fact that their releases are STILL 800*600 says a lot.


So yeah, the series is still.. kinda.. alive. But it's not easy. Something like Katahane or Nitro+ with their recent Tokyo Necro are probably better ideas, but these two are perhaps a little too special for their own good to help the yuri genre. There's definitely a market. How much it overlaps with the general market is the question though.

Just skipped through the Shin Koihime Kakumei, and Gi route is pretty much same thing with the Shin koihime's Gi route. There are a couple new scenes with new characters, but its all. Yep, its pretty much an extended version of the original shin so you can directly play it. Or more like playing this one is a better choice since there are a couple of new characters and new scenes in it with a better art and ost.

But dont forget that Shin Koihime is a 3 route game at total and they've made the only Gi, the first route, so far. Go route will be released at 2018 and Shoku at 2019. Which means its not completed yet, just a route of it.

Saying "generic humans" is a bit misleading because any attempt to change X hair color or Y eye color will necessarily mean going outside of what is representative of anything actually in Japan.

Well, they don't count in your mind, but they do in others. Now I don't have peer reviewed studies here but I have talked to many people, in real life, that have the same question: "Why do anime characters look like white people? They have blonde hair and big blue eyes." Many people think this is odd. Even if you don't, others do. And I don't think it's fair to paint that as racist (I know it was the other guy doing that and not you but I want to say I do not agree with that).

Let's take a pseudo-anime, The Boondocks. The characters are supposed to be black. Except the white ones, and the Asian ones. It is supposed to be a portrayal of reality with the characters having various races. I think the characters in pic related are black. If anyone thinking that makes me a racist then I'd request they reevaluate their definitions.

Thank you, you sweetheart. I actually have been on a hiatus from reading anything Japanese for a while. In the meantime I have been reading History of the World by J. M. Roberts. I decided I wanted to do better while playing Jeopardy and thought this would be a good starting point. It's pretty dense but it's a good read so far if you think you might be able to use some more historical perspective.

And I'm sure it's a bit of a pedestrian recommendation but I broke my J-hiatus a few days ago and started Aiyoku no Eustia and am really enjoying it so far. I know it's received some criticism here but at least so far the character interactions are very fun to read and it is a very nice change in setting compared to the seas of schoolge.

And perhaps I expose myself as an eroge dilettante by only recommending mainstream-ish stuff but I enjoyed Harumade, Kururu when I read it a few months ago as well. Less you know about it going in the better, but I would say out of the (admittedly shallow) pool of eroge I've read so far it was the best at weaving sex into the story well and discussing some of the effects it can have.

So, after checking some things out, this month seems to be fairly nice.

Apeiria has the "strong AI" theme, aka what if an AI gets to have a conscience? Kinda. And unlike Trinoline, it doesn't self-destruct its setting in the first minutes (or even hours) either.
It's not perfect. Scenes tend to derail a bit too often, dragging things out quite a bit at times. That could become a problem. Also there are times where characters just don't participate in dialogue, even though they are there and should say something. The biggest one I saw there was when a heroine fell naked on the protag, and none of the other 3 girls in the room comments on that, or says anything. Let alone that girl realizing she's naked, or where the protag is she's talking to and she literally sits on top. That was so idiotic and also unfitting with the the rest of the game, I was just confused. Guess you have to show your fanservice CG more than for 5 lines, but please. Hope that's just an issue in the beginning, and they don't start to fuck later on with several other people in the same room who somehow don't notice..


Biman 4 is pretty much what you expect. Great art, average rest. If you want a trap protag nukige, it's quite nice. Especially because the "average rest" is on normal eroge basis. The average nukige/high ero VN is on a much lower level than Biman 4. Though if you don't come for the ero, you should probably not come at all.


Then I tried Golden Hour. The beginning was extremely crude. The heroines were introduced so fast that it felt like I'm watching some advertisement channel and someone is trying to sell me something. The setting doesn't get dealt with much better. But, the actual dialogue after that is fine and the cast likeable enough. And hey, as crude as the beginning may be, at least it's fast?
The game seems to go towards relationship drama, which wouldn't be much different to the author's work before this. So far I enjoyed this more though. But the one before was half a nukige, so... yeah.

Okay i just did the 4 routes.I'm starting the true route but have one question.

Did Sayo know that Heishi is C.A from the start of the game?
I mean I thought she did as he revealed himself in front of Yurugi and Sayo in the casino. However in Sayo's route, Inori tried to tell her but Kukuri stopped her, and not only that there was a time where Heishi said a few people know he's C.A but didn't say Sayo's name.
Then during his confession Sayo said she didn't care about his sin, which shocked him. I don't know if he was shocked that she knew or he was socked she put it aside because of her love for him. I assume the later.


That said there a few other plot holes too, but just wanted to ask about this.
