You know what, even if you don't like Hachi's message, it's undeniably that his song has shaken the VOCALOID world for the first time in a long while.

I don't like to think about VOCALOID decadency as it's an important part of my life but I salute this song.

>Hey, hey, hey, you and me, wanna rendezvous?
>In this long-abandoned desert, what do you think about?
>Right now, pah-papah, come leaping out, my hero
>Please, save us who are so lost...

Hachi is literally an old bitter man. Instead of becoming one of the Vocaloid greats, he left to pursue a "real" career where he never had a chance to compete with the big boys.

I think you and the other salty anons don't know how popular Kenshi actually is. He has several songs with tens of millions views, and he's now being asked to make anime openings/endings songs all the time. Surely there's a lot of much more popular japanese musicias, but Kenshi is much more popular (and making much more money) now than he could ever be as Hachi.

>> No.17376065

>>17375904
Vocaloid is not half so popular now as it was in its heyday. He acknowledges this much because it's true. This is not even close to saying it's dead. The song itself is forwards-facing and encourages producers past and present to keep producing. The most uncharitable reading of it you can get is "Vocaloid is dying, so now more than ever, produce for it."

This is arguably an exaggerated doom-and-gloom reading, but still a far cry from saying that Vocaloid is dead. You could just as easily read it in such a way that both the producers leaving and the producers returning can stand in for himself.

You can judge a song you don't know the lyrics of on a musical basis but not a lyrical one. And judging a song musically is perfectly valid. If you don't like the way a song sounds, even if you learn the lyrics and like them the song will sound just as shit, lyrics don't carry a song. The opposite is also true, a song sounding great won't make it's lyrics less shit if they're bad. These components are both important in their own right and can be judged separately as well as how they form a whole. It's that simple folks.

Because it's so arbitrary. What about a song with gibberish lyrics like Ievan Polkka? Or a song with bubblegum lyrics like Popipo? What about a song with vocals but no lyrics like AiAe? What about a song that has lyrics but they're samples of movie trailers or news segments like that song I can't remember with the NASA alcohol abuse sample? What happens if you listen to a song with lyrics, you go, "I think I might like this song but I need to see a lyrics sheet first before I decide".

The lyrics matter because they are an integral part of a song, just as the text is an integral part of a manga. They are visual texts and should be evaluated on both their visual and textual content. The fact that there are works that are visual without text and works that are text without visual doesn't mean that you should judge works that are both solely based on the art or solely based on the text. >>17377874
>The lyrics matter because they are an integral part of a song
This is where you're wrong. You might think it's unfair for someone to come into a debate and retort with "no ur wrong" but your entire argument is based on an inherently and objectively flawed premise. The vocals may be integral, but the lyrics are not always.
The manga to music comparison is bad because a written piece, be it plain text or one with any degree of visual accompaniment, exists to tell a story. The story in a manga isn't an integral piece; it's the very foundation. All the other elements of the manga work together to tell the story because that's what their job is. Even a manga with no words still tells a story. You can have a manga with no words, but it'd be hard to find one with neither words nor a story. I can't even really imagine what that would look like.
Music doesn't work the same way, however. The point of a song is not always to tell a story. Sometimes it is, but it's not the foundation of all songs, which is why we're able to say a song is "good" even if it has no words and tells no story. You'll hear in a lot of interviews with musicians that sometimes they write the vocals like sheet music, and then after the rest of the song is done, they plug in words that fit the cadence putting little thought or effort into their meaning. Like I asked earlier, what about songs with lyrics that are nonsense? What about songs with bubblegum lyrics that have no meaning whatsoever? What about a song that has incredible lyrics but the singer is garbage and the drummer has no rhythm? How do you keep it all straight in your head what songs have lyrics that matter and which ones don't and judge accordingly? And what happens if you listen to a song and you have no clue what the lyrics are? Are you incapable of deciding whether or not you liked it until you see a lyrics sheet? How can you say a song is bad because you don't like the lyrics without evaluating any of the other aspects of the song at all?

>> No.17378176

>The vocals may be integral, but the lyrics are not always.
If a song features lyrics, the lyrics are usually an integral part of the song, even if exceptions can be found. Without knowing what the lyrics are you cannot reasonably make this evaluation. Someone reciting something in a foreign language can be judged on his cadence and the clarity of his speech. The fact that he might not be speaking a language at all, or a made up language like Kajiuraese, doesn't mean that it is reasonable to draw conclusions before knowing this.

Your rapid-fire question battery:
>Like I asked earlier, what about songs with lyrics that are nonsense?
Then you can evaluate it as an instrumental work.
>What about songs with bubblegum lyrics that have no meaning whatsoever?
The words chosen for bubblegum lyrics are part of the aesthetic of the work.
>What about a song that has incredible lyrics but the singer is garbage and the drummer has no rhythm?
Then the song is good at some things and bad at others. Some songs have good tuning and are compositionally boring. No magical contradiction arises here.
>How do you keep it all straight in your head what songs have lyrics that matter and which ones don't and judge accordingly?
By evaluating the lyrics and using critical thinking skills to determine whether they seem to matter.
>And what happens if you listen to a song and you have no clue what the lyrics are? Are you incapable of deciding whether or not you liked it until you see a lyrics sheet?
You can evaluate a manga you can't read, skillfully praising the mangaka's artistic skill, command of human expressions, and use of space. You even can decide whether or not you like it. It's still not going to be a coherent evaluation.
>How can you say a song is bad because you don't like the lyrics without evaluating any of the other aspects of the song at all?
The other aspects of the song also matter.

You can't say that. You don't know that for a fact. Who knows how many songs have "integral" lyrics or not. That's what I meant when I said your entire position is based on a false premise.

>Then you can evaluate it as an instrumental work.
>The words chosen for bubblegum lyrics are part of the aesthetic of the work.
Again, how do you determine which songs have "integral" lyrics and which don't? How can you tell a song doesn't have bubblegum lyrics but instead of being sweet and bubbly, they're just dark and brooding? Both sets of lyrics serve the same purpose but with different themes, so how do you tell which is which?

>Then the song is good at some things and bad at others.
So you're saying a song that's bad in every category is "good at some things" because it has good lyrics, but a song that's good in every category is just bad because you don't like the lyrics? Why are you able to separate parts of the first song and rate then individually but the second song is just covered with the "bad" blanket?

The philosophical position that we can't know anything without having listened to the entire Vocaloid corpus is very entertaining but in practice we have all listened to a lot of music - Vocaloid, non-Vocaloid Japanese, and otherwise - and have come to conclusions about what's important in the music.

>How can you tell a song doesn't have bubblegum lyrics but instead of being sweet and bubbly, they're just dark and brooding?
By reading them. This is a good example of a case in which the difference matters.

>but a song that's good in every category is just bad because you don't like the lyrics?

No, "we" haven't because I would eagerly wager that there have been far, far more songs written without "integral" lyrics than with. Especially in vocaloid songs in particular, lyrics usually mean next to nothing, and your method of determining which is which is completely arbitrary and subjective, which makes it even funnier when you act like a proponent of objectivity and rationality.
The best part is that the lyrics aren't even bad. You're just triggered by the context of it being uncharacteristic of an anniversary song. Had the song come out 6 months ago, or better, 6 months from now, there'd've been zero salt whatsoever.

I'm not the one trying to defend his method of judging and critiquing music. I categorize every song into one of two categories, songs I like and songs I don't like, and I never once said I used logic or reason to evaluate songs. I spent a good part of the nineties and most of the aughts thinking I was cool and smart because I studied art and could "judge" paintings and music and shit but eventually you grow up and realize; no one else cares about what you think is good or bad and why. Everyone has those same 2 categories, things they like and things they don't, and most people use little to no logic or reasoning when putting things into one or the other. If you like something, good. If you don't, fine. It doesn't really matter what criteria someone used, in the end, they like it or they don't.

>I haven't even said anything bad about the lyrics.

If somebody claims to be a fan of a manga they can't read, he's entitled to his opinion, and I'm entitled the opinion with a far better basis that he's a shit-eater passing judgment on things he can't understand.

Artists know that their works will be interpreted. Some people will like their lyrics. Some won't. Some will like they're tuning. Some won't. Some will like their composition. Some won't. I'm not even gonna touch the manga example again because I already explained why cross-media comparison is stupid yet you continue to do it. If you feel like your opinion is better than someone else's opinion, then that's all on you. You could know everything there is to know about a song and the artist who made it and memorize the lyrics, and like it and think it's good, and another guy could listen to half of it and decide he likes it and thinks it's good too. What do you win at the end of the day by being the bigger fan with the better opinion? You can't make him unlike it. His liking it doesn't affect you or your ability to like it too. Conversely, if you don't like something and someone else does, what do you gain from getting upset about it?

>Why did you specifically imply that musicians would be offended by the idea that people might interpret their lyrics and dislike them?
Because the point is you're not qualified to decide if a song's lyrics are "integral" or not. You could decide a song was bad because you didn't like the lyrics, which seems to be your only criteria, even if the producer intended for them to be throwaway lyrics.

I'm here and I love Miku from the bottom of my heart.

By the way, I talked with my boss about Miku and he come up with idea that it would be great if we had Miku greeting people who enters the office and her in the office in general. He really liked her voice and the general idea and so his daughter. I might be working together with my own waifu and make her real kind of, this is so great.

I'm a programmer.
We are talking about screen or hologram(which is what he probably would like most but it's pretty out of scope for us for now), not some whore or mere cardboard. I'm working on project that's potentially related to it, so I'll be mostly likely the one responsible for it.
Even today once I arrived to work he approached me and started talking about how he imagine Miku would react to such and such situations if only she was with us as a hologram. Yesterday he played her music on a meeting and we watched some live and he asked me about licences and stuff. He seems pretty hyped.

I can't wait to be greeted by Miku when I go to work.

I love his music. He tries to go out of his way to challenge us with new sounds in his songs yet kinda skims along the edges of what could work out best to earn the audience's favor. I'm late but I personally absolutely love him. His Miku's voice is unique and instantly recognisable, pretty much a 10/10. My personal top 5 producer. Although I feel a bit conflicted about his newer music as he's increasingly using his own voice, because in my opinion, his voice is okay at best. HUMAN could have been amazing if there was more Miku rather than his own vocals, since his music is still god-tier, but I just can't enjoy his voice.

The tree is barren...
Snow everywhere...
Maybe Hachi thinks the old times were not good either? Like if everything back then was fake and artificial?

I really am sick of all the Sandy Planet art cluttering up pixiv considering 90% of them are shit.

Luka singing in Spanish is cute. She should try it more often, maybe that way she becomes famous again.
