It's nice that you can understand the humour in Gaki even though you can't understand a word of Japanese. For example, this week's Gaki seems to be about making a veteran comedian audition for a role as if he were starting out in the business. Pretty funny.

Since most posts are about batsu games (ie. the only translated content) and weird/baseless speculations/rumors (eg. picture related, someone started a thread saying Matsumoto will retire and gave this tweet as his citation), not many.

I picked it up back when I didn't know the language that well, but I enjoyed pretty much all of the translated stuff I came upon (everything from free talks to Zettai Oishii and batsu games). That being said, I had already watched anime for several years and even watched GCCX and Tokyo Encount as raw.

I've been watching J-TV (anime, dramas, idol-shit) for 15 years, I've picked up enough words & phrases to get me though almost anything.

But honestly, you don't actually need to know much with comedy. A lot of the stuff are self-explanatory by body language and there's a lot of long-running jokes that they go back to because they still get laughs.

I ended up getting a sub-less copy of 24hr tag about 10 years ago (my introduction to Downtown) and it was very easy to understand. Getting s sub for it a few years later didn't really alter what I had grasped without it.

The concept itself has already been milked more than enough, but random chance happened to make this special really great.
Even Ebisu had perfect timings.

Also, I don't think abroad version would work. This game works both because the entertainment industry is completely centered in Tokyo (ie. all celebrities live, breath, eat, shit, and film their shows there), and because elevens are a really hivemind kind of nation when it comes to education, information, trends, memes, etc.

Slapstick and silliness is a universal funny thing. The only thing you miss out on is these actor cameos from shows years gone by, especially the Matsumoto/Hamada era dramas and stuff. The nipple drill thing from this year is the perfect example of "Holy shit this isn't funny, why are they all laughing?" if you don't know who the old man getting his nipples drilled is since the sketch goes on forever. I was sitting their in silence as everyone got OUT over and over. It only got funny when the one Italian guy sputtered out his lines and it was really short. Plus once you've seen one of the normal batsus (Not 24 hour tag or the pie one) then you get to understand most of the characters. Hell, the earlier batsus were much much easier to follow as a foreigner because it was all just slapstick trying to get them OUT instead of cameos to get them OUT.

Outside of the batsus the only tough thing would be watching their daily (weekly?) show, and even those have sketches that are simple to follow without any language knowledge.

Weekly.

The weekly shows though are 50/50. Some recent episodes are bad for us (Karuta, IKKO thing, etc) and some are great (No Reaction King, etc).
