This is the annoying part. I don't mind if it takes longer for cheaper shipping but amazon jp doesn't even offer that option.

There is no "meaning of a character".
There are READINGS that the character is trying to convey, if you are having headaches telling Kanji apart just learn radicals in a week.

Essentially associating Kanji with English words not only is a waste of time but you could have acquired vocabulary while you do it.

Of course not, I don't mine the bulk words, I keep saying I only mine words I don't acquire through exposure. There's a natural order, it's different for everyone, unless the right conditions are met you won't learn a given through exposure unless you overexpose yourself to it. The whole point of intentional study like Anki is to bypass that. You should certainly bank on exposure as much as possible, because when it Does work, it's maximally efficient, but if you're pushing yourself past your natural limit there are things it stops working for.

If you're just fishing for recommendations, キノの旅 is the default "easy novel." My first novel was 文学少女 though.

To answer the question in a broader sense, anything, although anything that is pure text will be much harder early on than something with less text.
Or rather, text in smaller chunks. (Manga/VNs)

Novels can be intimidating early on, not only because of the large amount of new vocab you are likely to encounter, but also the amount of text you are presented with on each page can be daunting. This isn't to say it's impossible, just time consuming and tiring.

What you want is to read what you enjoy, and a lot of it. In all honesty, unless you REALLY want to read that thing, it's going to be quite painful looking up 100s of words an hour. I'd recommend looking for as much SoL or shounen manga as you can get your hands on.

No. I browse through tsutaya and sanyoodo and find discount fantasy novels. Then attempt to translate. It's slow going. I generally read a lot in English, so I figure struggling through some young adult novels and some old copies of dragonball can only help, as far as increasing vocabulary. The discussion about mining vs reading got me thinking and I'm not sure what to do from now on.

I used to mine everything I didn't already know, but the thing is I absolutely fucking hate anki and would like to decrease the time spent with it as much as possible (while still learning effectively).

As for reading, if you're feeling frustrated or really not understanding anything at all it would be best to jump to easier texts for a while while you iron out your miscomings.
