For what it is worth, Dal Segno has peaked on Steam at roughly the same amount of concurrent users as Da Capo III (31 vs 30). That said though MG probably sold less through their own website with the new patching policy that began with Dal Segno (Kouryuu previously commented that the off Steam version was outperforming the Steam release, or at least it was back a few weeks after launch).

Is being used as the equivalent of a preorder system just is easier to market for them as it gets more exposure that way. You can get extras at different tiers bundled with it like you usually find as part of a preorder scheme for Ubisoft and it even has elements of the critically panned and hated "augment your preorder" with stretch goals adding new stuff as an incentive for people to put money down.
I don't really get why it is more tolerated than normal preorders when it is the same if not worse.

Or we could just call it cut content, because that's what it is. It doesn't matter if it's 10 lines of something you don't care about, it's still content that's in the original that isn't going to be in the English version.

As far as I'm aware the English version of Himawari is just a port of the Japanese Vita remake. I complained about MG not bringing over the original PC version as well back when it was announced, for what it's worth.

Personally I don't really get the appeal for eroge on steam to begin with.

Now I absolutely love eroge and porn in general. Nothing against it. Indulge in it frequently. And I have friends who are the same, and just like I frequently discuss it online with others, we semi-frequently discuss porn among each other as well. Porn is cool. And can even be a good topic for discussion. No issues there.
But at the same time I feel no need to see a popup saying that my friend has logged onto steam and is playing porn title X as it is happening. Nor do I feel a need to announce live, whatever porn I am playing to all my acquaintances as I am about to jump in either. I still kind of value the idea of privacy in the moment even if I can be very shameless in other contexts.
Of course, you could say that it's just a matter of playing of setting your profile to private or offline. And yes, you could do that. But then why use Steam to begin with? I really don't get it. But it seems to be what everyone wants these days. And it is pretty cool that Valve appears to be easing up on the whole idea of erotic content. But even so I don't really see the appeal of tying all of that to your Steam account.

Really hope they don't touch this either, and I'm optimistic considering they don't seem to touch exclusively 18+ content unless it's a shorter title. Amatsutsumi is very lewd.

It's clear that Kirby told him not to fuck with the script too much because he had already included the foreshadowing/double meanings, and obviously he couldn't expect a retarded editor like herkz to know what they actually mean without the appropriate foreknowledge, and, according to herkz, he appropriately kept his editing minimal (i don't really see why Kirby/Herkz couldn't just work through it together, like any other translation/editing team, and if >>17276401 is correct, he should've just chosen a different editor)

So why did they sell off an unfinished translation, then? Especially when it's pretty common for a translation to be kept out of the hands of a team who was already paid for it, and they should have expected nothing less after tossing it to KeroQ, who had no infrastructure to publish it in the West, and, as some of the team admittedly said, would likely not be able to do anything about a Western publication for years.

The markup compared to the bundle is significant, but that is in large part because the bundle was exceptionally cheap. Not that the regular mark up of $10 for the game and $10 for the porn is a great deal either for KaraKara or Nekopara, but it is much closer than the $1 for the game and $10 for the patch for people who went with the bundle. Thankfully, the trend seems to be moving towards free patches with the revelation that Steam is fine if you discuss a free patch, they have a bigger problem with a advertising a separate storefront than link to an R18 patch.

Anyone who needs the translation can only detect certain types of bad translation.

If the story makes no fucking sense, they'll catch on.
If the English is crap, they'll catch on.
If the subtle nuances and important subtext didn't survive translation, they'll never notice.

That's a legitimate way of translating poetry. It's common with longer poems, e.g. Beowulf, Homer. Often if you attempt to translate a poem into another language as poetry, it will entail taking various liberties with the text in order to fit the poetic form. But if you just translate it as prose you can concentrate on retaining the original meaning. There's no ideal when translating poetry, really, as something is going to be lost whatever you do.

With EGS titles that have at least 100 votes and an 86 or higher median, 28 of those 35 titles are either fan translated, officially translated, or licensed. Granted a couple of those translations are quite lacking (particularly ChuSinGura 46+1 and Phantom of Inferno). That list on the other hand appears to be a view of the top ten titles that were untranslated at the time that person created the list. Though it is quite close to the EGS list, as the only difference between the 7 titles remaining on that list and the 7 titles with an EGS median above an 85 would be to swap out Asairo for Baldr Force.

Most VNs wouldn't be found obscene, because for something to be obscene it needs to lack "serious literary, artistic, political, or scientific value." It would be hard to argue that most visual novels lack literary (and probably artistic) value, especially a title such as Subahibi. Frontwing's concern instead would be a local prosecutor causing issues because of what their own state laws consider patently offensive, even if such a work would likely be found non-obscene and thus protected in court against such local laws by the first amendment for its literary value.

Nevertheless, it would be much easier to bring an initial case on a title that has content that clearly violates the local law like the dog scene, even if it would be protected from such a state law thanks to its literary value. At the very least though, either Frontwing or whomever they are working with to distribute the title decided that it was worth removing the scene. >Never meant to have a sequel

A majority of games and anime are made like that. They always end on a certain note but leave the door open for a future sequel if the studio wants them to make another or if they decide to ever go back to it in the future. That is usually common practice in Japanese writing. Which not many here or anywhere else seem to know about and its extremely clever.

Phoenix Wright had an issue with this because the creator wanted the series to be a trilogy but no more than that. But as soon as Capcom kept asking for more games he had to think of a new way to introduce other characters and try to keep it something Phoenix Wright fans would like.

The problem is though Phoenix Wright's future games are nowhere as good as their first 3 because that was not his intention Vs Kadoka who just says "we will leave it as the final part to it but we will leave the door open in case we are asked to do another game" .

With the Subahibi release, I'm quite interested in what sort of in-game notice Steam allows Frontwing to get away with. Even with titles that have a free patch that gets advertised in things like the forums and reviews, you are still going to have a sizable percentage of people whom never will know that there is a patch. But if this Subahibi style of release is acceptable, and they are allowed to mention the patch in game, then suddenly a fair number of titles become much more Steam viable (and even a title like KoiKuma on Steam no longer seems quite as crazy).

Honestly, I'm glad MG picked him up. He's fairly new to the translation scene, but he's one of few who actually put in some effort into nukige translation. I just hope all the H-scene translations don't break him - I know it's chased off many a nukige translator.

The Phantom Trigger Volume 3 IGG project ended up with just over $50k from 753 backers. While the dollar amounts between this and the $183k Kickstarter aren't directly comparable because of the large difference between campaigns, the Volume 3 IGG project was down 950 backers from the 1703 that the Phantom Trigger 1+2 Kickstarter project got. It's possible since it seems to have been consistently getting 1k without the sale. Getting 5k during the sale and 1k before Otakon is... feasible.

Mangagamer's AX this year was better than last year, unless you were a fujo or really wanted /d/ material (Maggot Baits). Suki Suki was interesting because of how the CEO asked for advice from twitter though, and I'm sure there is a respectable number of Circus fans who wanted Dal Segno.

Damekoi and Evenicle are really hyped, there's Marriage Magical Lunatics for the moefags, and their first inhouse VN seems like it has some potential at least. Space-Live is a catastrophe, but I won't hold it against MG since it wasn't a secret project.

Otakon last year was really good for MG between Rance, Sono Hana, Sona-Nyl, and grabbing a game from a company that worked with Sekai. I doubt this year's Otakon can beat that. A Rance entry is a bit of a long shot because Evenicle was announced, and a Liarsoft game (or at least an artsy one) is really unlikely because Sona-nyl hasn't been worked on yet. Other than a possible Sono Hana game and Supipara, the other announcements are likely to be fujoshit since there was none for AX.

>> No.17292625

Corona Blossom would have been put into production around the same time, and that did have porn trying to follow in Nekopara's footsteps very closely. Obviously having Phantom Trigger being released in parts as opposed to a single title was designed to appeal to the Steam market, but Frontwing seems intended on making it a full blown multimedia franchise from the start and didn't want a porn release to get in the way (or at least the Frontwing president commented that being R18 would limit how it could be promoted because of the inherent restrictions on porn and that it would make an anime series "much more likely" in his interview when the Kickstarter went up.)

In that regards, it may also be why they opted not to have nipples in the Steam release despite being fine with including them in the Corona Blossom Steam version, as while Steam might not have an issue with them it would require a second censored version of the title if they say, decide to do a Japanese combined Vita release in time for the anime.

Makes sense that for now they just focus on the basics and when they build a fanbase go for the lewd. The good news is though I do think they will go back to 18+ sometime in the future. But I am hoping they can find another franchise to do it with besides just Grisaia.
