You're right in that it was probably the wrong question to ask, however the thought comes from the same place (as in, I'm asking for advice on learning).

I'm fully aware more time != more learning, I was asking as I figured there are plenty of people here with more Japanese experience than me who might be able to say how long it took them. I'm more just trying to gauge the average learning speed so I know what I'm in for. Luckily I do know how I learn best, so I should be fine regardless of how long it ends up taking.

I get where you're coming from though. I'll work on my phrasing.

If you didn't actually mean that, why even use the example of an essay to describe it in the first place? Stop being a dumb prick and recognise that you're just bad.

Mostly visual novels I was really excited to read, like 穢翼のユースティア or ひまわり.
Boku no Hero Academy is a shounen manga so it's definitely not anywhere close to the hard spectrum. You just have to accept that everything is gonna appear hard to you at the beginning. How you get better though is by going through it anyways rather than quitting or looking for something "easier" whenever you encounter the smallest difficulty. The only thing that's important is that your reading material is something that excites you and you enjoy a lot (hence going blindly with the usual boring beginner recommendations is not the best idea). Set yourself a time and read for that time daily. Don't pay attention to how many chapters you read or how slow you are, just read. It gets easier very quickly. I recommend installing the freeware program called ManicTime, it keeps track of any programs in focus so you can see how much you are actually reading versus procrastinating in your browser. This helped me manage time a lot more efficiently.

I did core for about 1000 words then started my mining deck. I didn't practice listening much other than the voices in the VNs. Practicing listening is a lot easier after you learned a good chunk of vocab first so you can actually focus on hearing rather than looking up words every few seconds.

>> No.17230489

1) It subscribes to pedagogy that doesn't work: expose, teach, test. The correct pedagogy is exposure and teaching at will, in whatever proportion the student wants. Nothing else works. Tae Kim at least cuts down on the testing part compared to Genki.
2) People assume it teaches more grammar than it does. It teaches surprisingly little grammar, and with surprisingly inflexible explanations. For example, despite teaching several terms that are only considered grammar features because they control 相, it never once even touches on how flexible the japanese 相 system is.
3) It teaches in a messed up order. Most famously, it teaches polite verbs before basic verbs, but it has many other problems in this category, like teaching ておく but not ていく/てくる, which are more common and harder to figure out with a dictionary. (This is an order thing because ておく is near the end. ていく and てくる are just past the cutoff point.)
4) As a textbook, it necessarily has to design itself in a way that makes it easy to sell to curriculum designer. This is the reason why it has a messed up order, has so many exercises, and cuts off during what is still basic grammar, but it has other negative effects. Like how each chapter is basically a graded reader explanation split up into discrete parts instead of having more lessons and grouping related terms (ので, のに) together.

>Looking back いつもかがやいてた
>笑顔 I remember 大切な時間
>Wish you (were) here 「今なの」[???]
>From my heart 違うよ I will never let you go

>その瞳がかすかに「嗅げた」
>見えない場所で日々は広がり
>この腕すり抜けていく欠片を
>抱き締めてた

I wasn't arguing for foregoing kana (lol). But the argument for learning them is that they are what is used, so you have to learn them and nothing else. Which is a moot point since the person reading the romaji would be aware that they're reading romaji and thus know to read/speak the letters in a pure vowel system. Of course not everybody who can read latin letters would know to do that, but the alternative would be them just not even being able to read the characters at all if kana were used.
>The "advantage" of representing more than the kana is a disadvantage because those syllables are nonsensical in japanese.
Being able to build more syllables with less characters is a clear advantage I'd say judging from the effort Japanese have to put in just to learn to write their own language.
You can build lots of nonsense words with kana too, so I don't see how this would in any way detract from the usefulness of latin letters.
Again, I'm not arguing for not learning kana, that would be stupid. I just don't like people actually believing that the reason they're used isn't historical, but logical.

Surely all these people would instantly know the native pronunciation if you just wrote ツンデレ or 萌え. The people not pronouncing tsundere correctly are just part of the people not knowing Japanese and thus at least being able to roughly grasp the content of the words they're reading, which is an improvement over not being able to understand anything. People that know how to read the kana and pronounce the kana would obviously be able to pronounce the latin letters correctly too since that's how they learned the kana in the first place.
>>17233730
Are you retarded? I said I'm not arguing for learning romaji instead of kana.
>yes lets waste time
Nuancing your pronunciation of already known characters would obviously be easier than learning completely new ones. Not even you will argue with that, right?

Imagine the Japanese had always used latin characters + kanji. No one in their right mind would say "Hey, let's make completely new characters that represent sounds we can already represent with the current system and replace all the used characters with them!"
This is what I mean. The use of kana is historical not logical. It's an artefact of how the Japanese language came to be, nothing more.

>> No.17233768

>>17233758
Actually, there's a very specific reason the kana developed into a syllabic system instead of an alphabetic one. Japanese has a very low phoneme density. Languages with low phoneme density prefer writing systems that put more phonetic information in each symbol. Alphabets are inappropriate for these languages. They would not use them unless they were adopting an abjad but needed to write their vowels.

>Are you implying that reading english is hard? Because that would be the logical conclusion of your argument.
That has literally nothing at all to do with what I just said. And you'll be happy to know that English is, in fact, affected by this. English uses morphophonemic writing. Not phonetic writing. It does not subscribe to the alphabetic principle. Because doing so would cause it to have text too simple for the information conveyed by each word.

There is only one thing to worry about. Glyph sequence complexity relative to the linguistic information it encodes. If you use a pure phonetic alphabet with a language that has low phoneme density like Japanese, you are making unnecessarily complicated written words. If you use a pure phonetic alphabet with a language that has high phoneme density like English, you are making unreasonably simple and easy-to-confuse written words.

And Japanese phonotactics are perfectly suited for a syllabary. Even if everybody in Japan was completely fluent in using the Latin alphabet for their own language, a syllabary would still be better because the information contained in each character in a text is more balanced that way and the writing system does not

Alphabetic dominance over all languages is a eurocentrism. And you don't know even the basics of the theoretical or practical knowledge that there is to know about what you're trying to talk about, you are a dilettante. You have no argument. Tae Kim is recommended because it's the best common guide if you're teaching yourself, despite its problems. College textbooks are generally bad for teaching yourself. I spent ten minutes trying to translate this sentence but gave up. I just want to know if the general meaning of the sentence is talking about how the girl's joining of the club ended up winning over the people who were trying not to care about it, and because of that she was able to manipulate everyone. The context is that they are talking about how their club or whatever took a hit after a single girl joined (since there weren't any girls beforehand).

Let me just start by telling you how grateful I am for the guide and the moemanga page. The CoR is a treasure trove. The guide is a good mix of both inspiring and sobering. So I'm just being honest when I say that there is something about your thread that just screams "we're the plebbit of 4chan! Come on in and we'll spoonfeed you and make you feel warm and fuzzy!" This is bad news for you because you're going to get kicked off of here. You will. And it's bullshit because most of you aren't the problem. You weren't the problem when you got kicked off of /a/ either. Yet you aren't powerless either. 4chan isn't big on babysitting threads. Which is a good thing and we should thank our goddamn lucky stars for that. However, it means in your situation you need to fully utilize 4chan's methods for self-moderation. Ignore posts that bother you. Report attempts at trolling. When people ask ANYTHING covered by the OP (which would include anything in the guide that it links to) politely tell them to fuck off and once someone has, just fucking ignore them. It's actually really simple. Ignore some posts, report others. Everyone slips up and asks a question covered by OP when they're just coming around to a thread. However, the newfag gives himself away as a fucking malignant tumor when he doesn't take the hint and instead bumps the thread again because he couldn't get an answer. People talking about duolingo? It's not funny to make fun of then anymore. Ignore them. Like their resolve to learn a foreign language, their resolve to pester djt will wane.

hi, small question about Genki I.

i've now noticed there's a "grammar and conversation section", and "the reading and writing section". should i do all the "grammar and conversation section" before the other section. like i'm working through a normal textbook? or skip back and forth like: do lesson 1 grammar, and then lesson 1 writing, the go back and do lesson 2 grammar...? there's 12 of each.

the first section was fun btw. rewarding to start learning japanese after memorizing the kana.

I don't think recording myself is a good idea since it would just reinforce my pronunciation (especially of words I'm reading and have never heard spoken), forvo exists but it's really kinda variable on quality. That said, I think it's a good idea to include listening practice in your daily studies. I always listen to something while preparing food and doing chores. At first it was the JPod101 lessons from the CoR and now it's ripped audio from anime and drama CDs.

Alternatively you could possibly make cards with audio phrases using Subs2SRS if that's really what you want.

Let's look at the example of 出る and 出す
出す, the transitive form: to take out.
Someone does the action of taking out to some object.
出る, the intransitive form: to come out, to leave.
The object experiences the action of leaving/coming out; there is no outside force acting on that to cause that action. It just happens.

Okay, thank you. I think I understand. What you're saying is:

出す - transitive
アノンを図書館から出す。
Take Anon out of the library.
出る - intransitive
アノンは図書館を出る。
Anon leaves the library.
(lit. Anon is taken out of the library.)

In the second sentence, Anon is in fact the object to which the action of no longer being in the library happens.

In that case I'm not much closer to understanding why 出る should be intransitive.

>アノンは図書館を出る。

Is it that the library is the object which is experiencing the leaving? While Anon is the one leaving the library, he is not a direct acting agent who is doing the action of leaving TO the library. The library's experiencing of the leaving of Anon was not done to it by anyone or anything. It just arises naturally once Anon is no longer in the building.

やれやれ。。。

Transitive verbs allow DOs.

Intransitives do not allow DOs excepting location nouns receiving an intransitive motion verb, which is actually a distinct usage of the を particle separate from its role as the direct object marker.

How does that sound

>> No.17240499

>>17240479
That's the right idea.

There are indeed transitive verbs that require DOs. For example, all lexical causatives (like 乗せる) imply a direct object by default. Most transitive verbs from transitive pairs where the transitive verb ends in す are lexical causatives.

How this stuff works (which is called valency) can't really be simplified into categories. That's why we gave up at the simplest possible distinction, which is whether it's possible to use a normal direct object.

I'm lucky enough that my teacher actually just expands her lessons and includes Kanji and non-standard exercises. It's an A1.1 course that would take ~ half a year to introduce all Kana.

"You cannot learn Japanese if you cannot read/write all Kana and those Kanji." Bless her for that.

I was sceptical as to join a college course, but the oral exercises and corrections from an actual native are really valuable.

This being said, it doesn't replace doing shit in your free time if you really want to "learn" the language. Which of course, we will never do.

I go through 3 pages of the KKLC a day, adding the didactic words to a mining deck and following a pre-made deck for the kanji themselves. I try to get through a chapter or more of Tae Kim in whatever time is left per day, summarizing the main points in a note-book and referencing the DOBJG if necessary. If I'm nearing the end of the week and I've been slacking on my grammar I suspend operations on the KKLC for as long as it takes me to make it to at least 10 chapters completed that week in total. Once I'm done with Tae Kim I plan to move on to Visualizing Japanese Grammar while simultaneously struggling through some kind of compelling content.

I first started by doing Core/TK and no kanji study but I found myself with a disappointing retention rate (~80%) and the constant frustration of mixing up similar-looking kanji. Now that I'm using the KKLC, the retention rate on my mining deck is 95% on a good day, 90% on a bad day, with the majority of failed cards being for a missed reading rather than meaning. Using myself as an anecdote I would therefore recommend the KKLC to other young anons despite contentious opinions on kanji study.

I'm not learning them separately and am learning them with vocabulary, but when I look at a word like 武装, the characters seem so similar to other characters like 我 or whatever that it takes me way too long to get my brain to process it.

It's especially bad for those characters where it feels like they're just a bunch of lines jumbled together with no unique shape. Kanji like 滝 or 純 are pretty easy because the shapes are kind of unique (at least to me).

Here's a basic example. 食 by itself, means something akin to food or your diet. 食べる is the same kanji with okurigana attached, which both change the pronunciation, and the meaning, which is now "to eat". 食事 is a jukugo, a combination of 2 different kanji, in this case 食, which you already know, and 事, meaning thing. When combined, they also mean something different, in this example "meal".

But it's not always as smooth as this, there are lots of kanji that may seem incomprehensible. The biggest thing to remember early on is that while the component parts of a kanji can sometimes hint at their meaning or pronunciation, they'll often appear to be complete gibberish and meaningless.

>>17242414
Most people finish kana in a couple of days. Some do it in an afternoon, some take a week, but they're used so frequently that you don't really need to have a rock solid grasp on them, you'll see them every day for the rest of your life. Thank you so much anon, the kanji thing is really difficult, but I think I'm getting a better grasp on it, the one question I have to ask though is this.

So each Kanji is just a word that's made up of hiragana right? That's all it is right? For some reason I think that Kanji is just a representation of sounds put together to form a word, is that the case?

Not quite, because the pronunciation changes based on where the kanji is, what precedes and follows it. So 食 could be read しょく on its own or next to 事 (しょくじ), and た when next to べる, or べった, or any verb conjugation. Hell, you can even read it as く in 食う, which is a more brusque way of saying "to eat".

Ultimately, a kanji is ever changing, but as long as you keep the nebulous meaning in mind of some fat kid stuffing his face, you'll be fine even if you don't know the reading.

Context is the main characters not completely understanding what they're doing in the grand scheme of things and exactly who they're working for and an outsider character is giving them advice.

Is there a way to hide the English translation of the example sentences on Anki behind a toggle button or something? They're getting a bit distracting.

Just listen a lot along with your usual studies and you'll get there eventually.

Don't get caught up in some particular word or sentence and just move on, the more exposure the better.

If you use subs use Japanese ones and toggle them when you absolutely need them. Don't rely on them too much.
Personally I'd advice against using them, you have reading and anki to cover that only focus on training your ears.

If you like anime or dorama, go ahead and watch a lot of raws. Before you know it you'll want to ditch subs entirely.

There's also hiragana only texts where it checks if you know the correct kanji for a word.

The thing is you only have about 10 seconds per question.

I've been watching shit in English with subs my entire life, Japan is the worst country for TV just because of how utterly impossible it is to find subs for anything.

I don't understand why anyone would watch a show without subs. Doesn't it drive you nuts when you miss a sentence because of dogshit sound mixing, or someone stumbling over their lines?

Going through taekim's thing.
Kind of confused about wa/ga.
If ga is used for properties, and wa for changing topics, wouldn't it make more sense for ga to be more common.
Ie, doing "Inu ga ogenki desu ka?" instead of "Inu wa ogenki desu ka?", since health is technically a property of the dog?

Yes, なり is sometimes written 也, and it is an old copular auxiliary like だ, である, です. It derives from にあり and has a ラ変 conjugation with an alternate 連用形like:
>なら
>なり/に
>なり
>なる
>なれ
>なれ
So the negative would be ならず, past-tense would be なりき/なりけり, etc.
Modern だ conjugates like this:
>だろ
>で/に/だっ
>だ
>な
>なら
>n/a
The だろ, で, だ and だっ conjugations all derive from である, but the に, な, and なら conjugations come from なり. The な is shortened from なる in the same way that the modern past tense た is shortened from たる, and the reason the modern 仮定形 is なら instead of なれ is because the modern 仮定形+ば pattern used to be represented by 未然形+ば, with the 已然形+ば pattern (as in なれば) meaning "because it is" instead of "if it is" (this also happens with たら, the 仮定形 of past-tense た).
There also used to be another copula たり that came from とあり and is still sometimes seen in words like 堂々たる.
