Non-religious means you believe in a higher entity or metaphysical crap, atheist means you reject it completely.

Also, that graph clearly shows some countries didn't poll for the "non-religious" option.

There's a difference
Athiests believe that the book is closed on the Existence of God, and that the fact (as in, fact, proven, etc.) is that God does not exist, end of story.

Most "Non-religious" (I think the term is Agnostic for most) believe that there is no way to know of God's existence or nonexistence except to die and find out, and that trying to prove or disprove God's existence (or nonexistence) is ultimately futile

phew

Not quite. There are 'strong' atheists and 'weak' atheists, and most atheists identify as 'weak' atheists when surveyed specifically.

'strong' atheism = I KNOW there is no God

'weak' atheism = I have no reason to believe there is a God any more than I have to believe in a Flying Spaghetti Monster, so I withhold my belief pending actual evidence.

No, non-religious means that you don't affiliate yourself with any official religion, ie "not religious". Religion is the organization and practice of a belief, so non-religious doesn't really say too much about particular beliefs.

And atheist means that you reject theism. Metaphisical stuff is irrelevant to the definition.

>theologians
Theologians are, by definition, people who study religions, the great majority (all?) belonging to a religion of their own. Therefore, it's not unreasonable to think that these people aren't fond of people who make a mockery out of their work and life mission, and therefore, they try to discredit them by saying "not believing is the same as believing". They're possibly the most biased authority you could think of in this matter.

Athiest means anyone who put down, "Athiest" in the little survey for religion affiliation, while non-religious means those people, plus anyone who declined to answer.

Also, it's possible to have gods without religion, and it's equally possible to have a religion without any gods. Finally, most forms of Buddhism acknowledge the existence of gods, but state that they're not to be worshipped, because the gods themselves are busy trying to attain enlightenment and aren't really concerned with being worshipped. That's generally considered the "official" take in the scriptures used in the three major branches.
