The thing that I like about this game is the sort of survivalist feel it has. The items and inn in town are more expensive than they are in other RPGs, and getting back to the last floor of a stratum after using a warp wire can be a hassle, so you have to learn how to use your skills and items efficiently in order to live in the labryinth on your own. It's really cool once you get a your Medic and Troubadour's skills high enough and your party becomes self-sustaining and never has to sleep again.

yeah, its a feeling that many rpgs these days have lost, RPGs are supposed to be about adventuring and taking your own desisions with the cast of characters you WANT, I was much more excited each time I reached a new stratum than most plot twists of jrpgs these days.

I also liked the fact that spending sp on skills was costly since SP recovery items are so expensive, and the fact the Cursecut/TPtransfer combo requires so many points and really hurts your team offensively on like the first 20 floors.

All of the music in EO reminds me of other songs for some reason.

- The town music sounds like a slower version of the chorus to "Nova Era" by Angra.
- The third stratum sounds like a slower version of the chorus to "Court of the Crimson King" by King Crimson.
- and the fourth stratum reminds me of a specific part of "Can-Utility and the Coastliners" by Genesis. A slower one, of course.

Sad that L/R no longer toggled the floor level, and FOEs give no exp.

This pissed me off. Some of my most triumphant moments in EO1 were when I'd go back to FOE's that used to ruin my day and farm them for exp. I was also kind of disappointed that I wasn't getting annihilated by moles on the first floor like I was in EO1. From a design standpoint, it's probably better that the difficulty is more balanced, but getting raped by your first random battle and realizing what you've gotten yourself into is part of what made EO1 such a thrill.

Other than that, though, EO2 definitely took all the short-comings of EO1 and fixed them.

When you retire you're level cap is the level you retired +1, with the max being level 99. You start on level 20 I believe with the stat/skill points bonus being a generic amount based on the level at which you retired, class is irrelevant; in EO1 the stat points were based around the class with which you retired.

I believe there is an additional boost to the stats at certain levels, eg. 80, 90, 99, but I never got to those levels.

Damn, this thread is calling me back to the labyrinth.

EO2 is just sitting there waiting for me. I just need to finally beat the goddamn True Last Boss in EO1 (fuck you binds, fuck you necrosis) and farm a few items to get 100%.

God fucking damn I hope they make a third game. Has there been any word on this? Please say there has been. I know Atlus loves to pull shit out of nowhere, but usually we at least get a heads-up.

I gotta go fucking beat the final boss in the first one, and I have to finish up the second. I guess I may as well finish the first one before moving on. I have to beat the last fucking dragon thing before I fight the guy on floor 30.

There isn't a third game per se, but the character designer is working on another, more traditional RPG for the DS.

That has nothing to do with EO and everything with /v/. You can hear the same about Fallout 3 on a daily basis.

I hope so. It looks like I might have to train a survivalist from scratch to beat it. Welp, I needed to farm some monsters anyway.

I tried the first game, but I was presented with a bunch of menus with absolutely NO indication of what tyhe fuck any of it meant so I said "fuck this" and played something else without actually seeing a dungeon.

Seriously, why the fuck does it expect me to design a party from scratch - I don't even know how many party members I'm supposed to have - without some kind of guide as to what the fuck does what?

You guys played diceless? When I was your age you needed at least three of every kind of dice just to roll up your character, and that includes all the dice with a prime number of sides up to 1583! And we didn't have pencils to write with or paper to write it on, either; you had to keep track of your stats by punching holes in your skin with a thumbtack, and if it ever healed over you went down a level!

Are you talking about 7th Dragon? I was kind of waiting on that, I know he's directing it, but might be something different.

Yeah, it's 7th Dragon. http://dragon.sega.jp/

The way I see it is... if Etrian Odyssey was Niinou's take on Wizardry, then 7th Dragon looks like Niinou's take on Dragon Quest. He talked a lot about Dragon Quest in his director diaries for Etrian Odyssey, so I'm not surprised that he wanted to make a game like that too. Has 7 classes to choose from, and 4 portraits for them. But instead of one dungeon to explore, there's an overworld, multiple towns, and all that jazz.

Music is also by Yuzo Koshiro again, and Rieko Kodama is the producer. It's like all my favorite video game people joined forces. Well, save for a few. ;_; Character Design is by Mota, who I'd never heard of before this, but I like his art so that's cool too.

This trailer shows off all the different class portraits. It's also on the official site but it loads slow as hell there.

And a look at battle scenes. The sprites are adorable.

Also dur, I just realized... did you mean to say character designer? The only game after EOII that Yuji Himukai has worked on is Kumatan, which isn't an RPG at all... but looks neat regardless.

Thanks for encouraging me to get back to it by the presence of this thread. I'm still just in that floor on the 3rd stratum with the leaf things floating on the water that transports you around. Temporarily gave up when coming there, as it was a bitch to map. If anyone remembers it, how did you map it?

Haha, I got annoyed by that place too. The first time I tried to number the lily pads... that was stupid. The second time I just drew out the paths they went on with the pencil tool, like I was drawing walls. That was way easier to do, and I understood it fine when revisiting the place.

Heh, exactly the same thing I tried. Drawing walls sounds like it could work well, though. Thanks.

He also does an official 4koma webcomic for Twin Angel and apparently has another (game?) project he's working on but can't announce details of yet.

While he does quite a bit of touhou fanart, I don't think he's ever released a doujin. Closest to that is being commissioned to draw covers for several IOSYS albums.

But touhou is hardly the only thing he does. He probably talks more about 15-20-year old games than he does about touhou.

That and headphones. He is a music aficionado.
