What about the first three chapters and their atmosphere of mystery, before it gets all chuuni fights? I quite liked it.

>> No.17126475

>D.S. – Dal Segno’s All Ages Steam version will be receiving a free patch to implement adult content!

>We know how important platform choice and version parity are to many of you, so we used our recent in-person meeting with Valve as an opportunity to address those concerns and discuss content restrictions and off-site patching. We’re committed to doing right by our customers while adhering to Valve’s policies, and to that end we managed to reach an understanding with Valve regarding patches.

>Going forward it will be our general policy to provide free content patches for all Steam releases whenever possible where there are content differences between versions. Technical issues or contractual obligations with specific developers may make patching not possible for specific titles, but we will do our utmost to ensure that doesn’t happen. Should patching not be an option for a relevant title, we will inform you before it goes on sale.

>We will be working to update some of our existing Steam titles with content patches in the future; however, as our previous Steam releases were designed as separate versions, it may not be immediately possible for some older releases.

Aroduc has been pretty upset with him and other people in the community for a long time for trying to pressure him into accepting an extremely unfair deal with Sekai Project for Baldr Sky. I don't know the details, but apparently it involved Sekai Project having carte blanche to not pay him if they found any issue with him or his work, and required that he completely quit fan translating and remove everything having to do with it from his site. He tried to revive the Prism Ark project a few months back, but nobody besides him did any work on it. A few weeks ago, he gave them an ultimatum, which came and went. Doddler posted those tools some time after that, but I don't know anything about whether or not they're new or the old versions that don't work.

Nekopara Volume 3 seems to have stabilized at about 65k on Steamspy, though it should have a very long tail with time.

It is much too early to get a good read on how Dies Irae is doing. It has peaked today at 282 concurrent users (it reached an initial peak of around 100 during the Kickstarter exclusive period) so a fair number of people are playing it. But it is too early for Steamspy to be much use and of course Steamspy won't give an indication about how many people actually brought the DLC. That said, regardless of how well it sells in the short term, it may have a considerable boost in the Fall once the anime starts airing.

LoveKami Useless Goddess peaked at 36 concurrent users, compared to 19 for the previous LoveKami spinoff. Although that is probably just an artifact of being a bit more front loaded, as Moenovel has managed to get the original up to 6-7k despite the very slow start. I'd be curious how much of that came from sending out coupons to owners of Konosora

One key thing you are missing is he talked about the pay. And seeing as he had a lot of Baldr Sky already was nearly done and the tools were ready to help port it with no extra cost to Sekai all that needed to be done was pay him. He did not say specifics of how much but he did say it was way below the usual amount for something of the quality and below "the ballpark amount".

Aroduc tried to nogotiate near a good amount and Sekai said it was unreasonable and decided to talk to him in a few months. Really funny how Dovac of all people is a shitty businessman and does not know a good deal when he sees one. The main titles that had a significant delay for the R18 releases have been Grisaia, Muv Luv, and Dies Irae. Grisaia has the two titles running on different engines, while Muv Luv and Dies Irae are using a console port as a base and putting content back together for the PC release. In all those cases there is more technical work than usual going into making an R18 patch (compared to a Steam release made by just cutting Steams from the existing PC version) and the priority went to getting the Steam release out as quickly as possible.

I can sort of see their point though. Like if Steam users don't understand Japanese, why keep voices? If it is only all-ages, why bother re-visiting CG?

Naturally what they did miss was that they had the same customers here as in Japan. I.e. otaku that want porn stories with voices.

He already knows what an acceptable contract and deal looks like working with JAST multiple times. With how shit some of the terms that seem to be floating about (no one knows how true they really are though) and the price he was given that was hinted at on his blog post about it, it isn't such a surprise that even with some revisions to it wasn't going to be up to acceptable standards for him with the attitude Sekai seemed to be taking for it.

Understanding why Aroduc distrusts Sekai Project is easy. They cut him out of the loop on it and stopped communicating with him, on top of all the public failings and broken promises that everyone knows about.

I'm not sure why Sekai Project distrusts him. For publicly complaining about them is my best guess since Dovac's a thin skinned faggot and can't take any criticism.

I'd guess that it was some Dovac Art of the Deal bullshit. Present a terrible offer, so you can look magnanimous by presenting a merely bad one after it, but he underestimated how mad at them Aroduc was, and overshot how shitty he made the offer, just justifying Aroduc's belief that they can't be trusted.

Total destruction of his fan translations seems like it'd be a pretty major sticking point for him as well. I don't understand why that would even be in a contract about a completely unrelated game, except as Dovac swinging his dick around, which is plausible.

I'm not sure about Conjueror and Steiner, but they were only two of the translators on the project, there were, like, 4 others I think. Ludo was criticized for getting basic Japanese wrong 2 years ago, but it's possible he has improved. But I don't really know to what extent Ludo worked on this translation. He gave himself credit for Steins;gate for example, but he only translated the intro/outro iirc. The only other translation I've read from Conjueror was Himawari, and besides that cringeworthy "Onii-chan" scene, I didn't find too many issues with it aside from numerous typos (which I think were patched out). Some weird English, perhaps.

(just an FYI, I'm not a fan of any of these "e-celebs," and I really hate how often they come up in discussion. There's often two extremes presented when it comes to conversations around them; severe-fellating from drones, and incessant hate from people who think they can do no right, likely due to some grudge. I admit, I fall into the latter category when it comes to a few of our fine community members, but I still try to bring them up as little as possible)

Pretty much any visual novel translation has mistakes. I can't really take this Coffeeflux guy seriously when all he does is post one screencap and call it proof of a bad translation. His critiques usually end in, "Oh, well this is an example of bad english," and such, and while that may the case it's kind of stupid to make blanket statements about an entire translation, and to not even offer up an alternative. He pulled this shit with Irru & Trip as well, and while I have no interest in Hatsukoi and such, him pussying out after Irru confronted him over the translation makes me think this guy just doesn't have the stones for criticism, doesn't want to engage in a worthwhile conversation, and only flings shit around in regards to TLs to further his own ego. It's the typical kind of snide, condescending attitude that a lot of these more """elite""" members of the community take towards translations.

By all means, give the translation a good critique; it could allow them to patch out their errors. But the kind of shit coffeeflux does on a regular basis strikes me as criticism without substance.

I guess the new MG policy is getting to them a bit, as Denpa felt the need to put out a post justifying their R18 patch prices https://denpasoft.com/blog-en/how-are-denspasoft-games-priced/ . Granted, I doubt they'll change course anytime soon simply because patches outsell off steam standalones on Denpasoft, they wouldn't want to do anything that would raise Steam prices, and at least at the Kickstarter phase people are willing to pay extra for R18 content.

Hoshimemo just passed $59k with its Kickstarter, so another $16k to go for the fandisc. It has continued to gain on Chrono Clock's pace, now just $1k behind. It will actually pass Chrono Clock tomorrow as Chrono Clock lost one of its $1700 whale tier for a few days this far in. Sekai also announced for Hoshimemo that they'll be doing a standalone box again during the Backerkit for $45, which amusingly means that only half of the $90 physical box tier is actually for the physical box itself and it is instead boosted by charging $45 for a Steam+Denpa Keys + digital soundtrack. They also put up prices for the fandisc, which basically comes down to $15 more for physical or digital during the Backerkit to get the Keys (or $30 for both, since they'll be bumping up the standard $90 physical tier to $120).

The Sekai Humble Bumble has passed 10000 buyers at an average of a bit shy of $10/backer, or they are approaching $100k in revenue (some going to charity). One major effect of this is is the Steamspy estimates of the titles in question will become less relevant. Root Double shows a roughly 5k average on Steamspy looking over its recent performance, and seems like it will more than double by the time the Humble Bumble is done. KaraKara is available the $1 tier in the bundle, and being at roughly a 12k Steamspy estimate it also will clearly more than double its existing install base. Japanese School Life is around 2k on Steamspy, so copies sold through the bundle will make up the overwhelming majority of its sales. A few other titles such as the Michiru spinoffs and Sound of Drop will more than double their sales and WEE 01 and Fault will see a meaningful bump to their sales, though it will be a drop in the bucket for Nekopara.

Lastly, Dies Irae has continued to reach roughly 250 concurrent users a day, so people are clearly still playing it. It is up to 50 reviews as well, which isn't bad for this far along. Though of course, between the Kickstarter and free common route, it is impossible to guess how well it is actually selling DLC on Steam.

Love that blog. The company saying "Fuck you, 18+ players, you aren't our customers" are stating that the price difference is just because they want to attract new non-customers that may in the future start to buy 18+ versions too.

It is amazing how their all-ages only plan somehow still set their pricing based on selling 18+ games. And how is that expected to work when they keep saying Sekai and Denpasoft are unrelated and don't want people to connect all-ages products with the adult products?

You fail again Sekai. Your lies only work with the "I only want all-ages" customers anyway. Everyone else sees through it and know you just want to rip 18+ customers off.

Dovac did consider doubling the price in one of his old twitter rants about how pirated they are. I would imagine the pirate rate of patches is far higher than the sales amount even for something like Nekopara which would be quite uncomfortable numbers for them.

I never thought that the idea of Sekai charging for the 18+ patch was ever unreasonable for many of the same reasons I didn't blame Mangagamer for charging extra for the adult version of the game compared to the Steam version.

That said, their pricing is ridiculous. A $10 patch for a $10 game is absurd whereas Mangagamer only has a $5 gap at most. Even before the H-patch thing, MG opted for no price difference between the steam and MG editions for Myth because the H was too minimal.

I wonder if MG already convinced Moonstone to make the Steam and 18+ versions the same price for the Princess Evangile fan disk so an H-patch would be feasible. I could see complaints if that wasn't the case.

I think Pricing should be relative to the length of the game and to some of the H Scenes. For example if a game is 3 hours long with a few H-Scenes 5$ is not much to ask, but if it's 3 hours and longer and has more H-Scenes 10$ should be worthy to ask for.

The problem is Sekai tries to justify everything based on the quality of the game. Which sure its really good looking but if it does not have anything more content in H-Scenes it should not be much.

Is it bad translation when the writing is the one that's bad to begin with? It's not the fucking translator's fault to fix up a translation where the original writer decided to slap "shikata ga nai" in his fucking story over 20+ times. Maybe, the asshole should expand his vocabulary, after all, he was the one who created the story.

The argument lies on the hinge of the writer and his original writing. Like the guy says in the image: if you had to convey a particular character, but the actual fucking writer himself simply conveys his characters in all the same bad writing way without any prose of personality to them, then it ain't on the hinges of the translator to go around making a character express a cheap ass, unoriginal line in a way the original was not. You could easily say every one of the character's he presented with the alternatives are wrong and rewrites because the writer was a shit writer, and option 1 was simply what he wanted all of those character types to sound like in his literature.

In retrospect it was a poor choice of license with no safe way to handle it, but when they licensed Maitetsu Steam was still strong (it wasn't clear that Steam sales were going to drop off sharply until a few months later), and they were in the middle of the period when they didn't care about R18 releases (which didn't reverse until early Summer). If Lose had approached them at the time with a shiny new VN that could potentially do well on Steam they wouldn't have turned Lose down, even if it wasn't exactly a safe title to release even with no R18 plans.

It is not that easy to tell how Dies Irae has done beyond the Kickstarter simply because there is no method to determine how much DLC it has sold, which is going to be the big question. Additionally unlike most titles it doesn't need a huge launch to be a success with the glorified commercial of an anime in the Fall.

>>17142332
It would be nice if it had achievements, just because it would offer a way to see how many people played through it (offering an indirect way to determine how many people on Steam had passed the end of the free content). Although that highlights one issue with the paid DLC being at the end of a long common route, as frankly, a relatively small percent of players on Steam actually get through longer VNs when a VN manages to draw in a broad crowd based on the achievements of other titles. Clannad has sold somewhere around 42k based on Steamspy, but of those who purchased the game 77% got the achievement for getting through the prologue, while less than 20% got the achievement for getting their first light orb. It only drops from there, with some of the character routes dropping down to just above 10%. Steins;Gate has sold between 25-30k and while 87% of people have got the achievement for starting the game, just shy of 20% got the achievement for 25% of CGs unlocked.

The problem here is that you seem to think each shikata ga nai is the same when really it's just two words that rely on the rest of the sentence/the moment for context. Someone posted a great example a few days ago where apparently the standard japanese translation of "No use crying over spilt milk" uses shikata ga nai in japanese. To be specific, the shikata ga nai part corresponds to the "No use" in english. As you can see, it's context dependent. And when you always translate it as "It can't be helped", you're ignoring the context around it. And further, while it's a good general all-purpose translation for newbies, there are times when it can be janky due to the insertions of "it" as a general way to refer to the context(there is no "it" in shikata ga nai).

Also the parts of the sentence that would characterize a character in english are different in japanese.

We're already above bump limit so...

He's more or less right, even if localizers often do tend to go to far and try to add a "voice" that a character never had for the sake of exaggerating drama or comedy.

The problem with the whole Persona 5 thing is that its issues were issues pretty much every localization of an otaku game had and fans of otaku games were already used to tolerating. That's why most people, including me, treated Persona's issues as a complete non-issue that was exaggerated by people who had a different ideal for translation than for the general otaku game fan. It didn't help that the game media websites like Kotaku who attacked Atlus over the translation also defended Treehouse for their terrible Fates "translation" which often outright refused to translate important details out of laziness or for the sake of memes. Only reason they care about Persona 5 is because edgy hipster gamers like the modern Persona series.

People need to remember that otaku gamers are often the type of people perfectly willing to play and import shit-tier English Asia localization games like Gundam Breaker or Super Robot Wars. Their standard for quality of translation (as far as how it reads in English) is low, and they care more about if obvious bullshit is added to a translation to make it feel fresh and hip than if the English is non-awkward. I personally can unconsciously tune out awkward English if I read silently; not like I'm reading the game out loud as I play.

If anything, Sekai may be a aiming a tad cheaper than MG with full length titles. MG tends to favor $35 (with the two Circus games at $40, which could become the norm if MG factors in the R18 patch into the Steam price of upcoming titles that would otherwise be $35), while Sekai has put the Grisaia sequels and Chrono Clock at $30.

Da Capo III, Gahkthun, and Dal Segno will be the three MG titles priced at $40. Obviously Da Capo III was in part because of how huge it was, though I wonder if Dal Sengo is $40 because of the patch or because Circus wanted it as such.

Aside from those though, MG has put Kindred Spirits, Ozmafia, Cho Dengeki Stryker, Princess Evangile, Tokyo Babel, Pygmalion and Himawari at $35, so that certainly has seemed to be MG's preferred price for a full length voiced title. The only other titles they have above $20 are Umineko and Fata Morgana at $25.

For Sekai there isn't as much to go on simply because they haven't released as many titles. Clannad was $50 and the first Grisaia was $40, Root Double was $35, and Chrono Clock + the Grisaia sequels have been $30. Hoshimemo will probably be $30 for the main game and a bit less for the fandisc judging off the $20 Steam key tier on Kickstarter (same as Chrono Clock). Leyline was $25/title on Kickstarter though that included both the Sekai and Denpa versions, so it will probably be either $30 with paid patch or $35 without.

The effects of the Sekai bundle has started to show up on the Steam data (which is up to 40,000 bundles sold).

KaraKara, both parts of Fault, Ame no Marginal, both parts of Idol Magical Girl Chiru Chiru Michiru, the Narcissu Anthology Project, Sound of Drop, Japanese School Life, WEE 02, and Memory's Dogma all have had their all time concurrent Steam users since the Bundle went Live. Root Double isn't all that far away from breaking its record either, so that may happen shortly.

Steamspy has also caught the initial part of the surge. Most of the titles in the bundle showed a large bump today. For example, here is the 90 day Steamspy chart for Japanese School Life. Obviously the amount of sales on Steam weren't going up and down for the duration, that is just Steamspy's variable estimates for a title without that many sales. However, it is easy enough to see the huge jump on the last day of the period (today) in response to the sudden influx of copies sold in the bundle.

Unfortunately, all of this does mean that the data for these titles won't be as useful going forward.

This translation is really a mess. It's riddled with typos and ESL grammar everywhere, misspelled words like "fourty", they chose to remove senpai yet they leave in words like moe and tsundere, and a large amount of the furigana accompanying German words is completely disregarded so it's just the raw German remaining and you have no idea what it means without google translating it yourself.

Then there's the blatantly wrong lines like pic related, 十二時間 is 12 hours not 20, and if you weren't braindead you'd realize that storywise it's not possible for it to be 10 PM if he slept for 20 hours.

Did they want to meet their deadlines so badly that they rushed it out without having a single quality checker go through it or did they hire ESLs for that too?

Steam will supposedly play test all submitted games to make sure they work and are as advertised. And new developers have to have a coming soon page up for awhile, so that it gives people time to inform Steam of stolen assets, etc.

>100 dollars per game isn't shit.
Greenlight was pay 100 dollars once and submit all the crap you want for free. Greenlight didn't stop bad games from getting on Steam either.

>> No.17146881

>>17146539
The idea behind Greenlight originally was to allow some good titles through that otherwise would be overlooked. It worked fine while controls were in pace and it wasn't token approval. The new system isn't making any such promises, Steam claims they will deal with stolen assets and games that don't function as advertised (or function at all), but by design there is no longer a filter in place to judge the quality of games being released on Steam..

They might announce something before Otakon though. Not sure what else last year sold well enough for that.

Possible. MG doesn't usually do that, but AX is a big expo. Maybe they want to try boosting in convention sales.

Maybe the release date is set after AX to indicate that there won't be an Alicesoft announcement during then though.

>> No.17153377

Nutaku is following in Steam's footsteps and is allowing off site patches to games.

>An announcement we’d like to add, is we’ve had to make several changes to the game due to the rules of our publisher. These are mostly aesthetic changes to some of the character designs. The good news is that we are going to offer a free patch that returns the game to normal available to anyone who bought the game available to anyone at no cost at time of release.

>Please download this patch with the game and revert the game files to get the true experience!

https://www.patreon.com/posts/mutiny-launch-11655273

>It's totally legal in the US, there's nothing even gray about it, but this wasn't so much a choice by Nutaku, but iIt's just the rules of the banks where our publisher is located that they have some guidelines. But at the same time Nutaku is allowing us to share and advertise the content patch, and spread that info on our own.

>So it was a good situation for us as we would not want to have to permanently alter the type of game we pitched.
