I feel pretty comfortable at 15K. Not fluent, but for a game like Subahibi I get maybe 5 new words per 1K lines. You could guess or skip those without missing much if you wanted (although looking them up is no problem). The number of cards in your deck is also not a great indicator of its value. I'm generous with adding cards, but I do make the bare minimum effort to not add totally obvious shit. There's one anon here with 3500 kanji spread over 6000 cards, and on the other hand I've seen someone who claimed to have 20K cards while knowing only 2.7K kanji.

>> No.17019657

Unless you are doing double sided cards you are merely training recognition (i.e. passive vocabulary). A native speaker's passive vocabulary ranges from 25k-50k depending on factors like their education and social circle. Now mining that many cards can be a bit troublesome, in the latter stages of language learning words should be learnt more passively. Mined words therefore seems to be a bad indicator of how good you are or how well you will read.

Is there any anki core2k like deck that doesn't (or rarely) us any kanji, but rather hiragana and katakana?
Basically I want to learn vocabulary separately from kanji, as I think that my pace will be much faster that way.
Also listening comprehension is more important than reading for me.

>> No.17019931

>>17019914
Bad idea no matter what your goal is. You can theoretically simply restructure the existing core decks as they have the Kana information in there but it's simply inadvisable. If you really want to to learn Kanji, do that, but also learn the vocabulary with the Kanji. That way your studies overlap. Trying to categorize and isolate language learning sections only harms you.

>> No.17019966

How can it harm me if it is the way japanese people learn?
First the words are learned and then the kanji.
I think it will hamper me if I fixate too much on the necessity of reading kanji, as I can learn vocabulary much faster than kanji.
Kanji study is something I will do separately, but at a lower pace.
As for the deck, maybe I will write a script which automates the process.

Especially since listening comprehension and speaking is high priority for me, as I will spend a lot of time in Japan soon.
Knowing a lot of kanji is not really necessary for day to day life in japan, understanding others, knowing how to form sentences and speak is.

Truth is, english teaching is more like a step in order to give yourself more chances of attaining residency in Japan. Most companies like JET will probably just use you and then throw you away in order to welcome more hungry foreigners. And when you do get thrown away, or just get tired of the same teaching agenda, you'll have nowhere to go. Teaching english doesn't give you any valuable work experience. Well, you'll definitely have a confident grip on the grammar when you first start out, with problems only arising when you get to very late intermediate things. For now I recommend learning kanji through words instead of individually, it's less efficient than doing them individually but it will get you more vocab and kanji faster. Remember to write them down and do lots of recall practice, this is VERY important.

Otherwise I'd recommend starting with Minna no Nihongo or Genki right away, unless there's something keeping you from dedicating 2-3 hours a day on studying that stuff.

This is kind of depressing to read. I've only been studying for 4 months and I can draw 850 Kanji from memory, know a bit over a thousand words and understand most basic grammar. I've spent a lot of that time studying though and in all likelihood my free time will be reduced to a fraction of what it is now in the near future. I hoped I could get all the 常用漢字 out of the way, like you so I can intensively focus on vocabulary and reading. Right now I learn to draw 8-20 Kanji a day (depending on how busy I am) and yes, my goal is to write so it's not a waste of time. My biggest fear is really to build up such a huge Anki load that I will not be able to do it in my reduced freetime (or it being the only thing I can do). It seems to me that unless you have a huge amount of free time, it really is impossible to learn Japanese.

>> No.17032725

Basically kanji aren't japanese. They're *just* a writing system. Learning kanji only removes one layer of alienness from japanese, it doesn't make it so you understand most of the words in what you read, neither by meaning nor pronunciation. Words are productive: you can learn words and you will intuitively understand what they mean when put together most of the time, except for in idioms etc. Kanji are not productive: knowing all the kanji does not make you intuitively understand what they mean or how they're pronounced when put together.

I really don't like textbooks. I've started reading some basic things and it's going alright. I spent only a fraction of my time learning Kanji, otherwise I could probably learn to write 50 or so a day. Maybe I should even do that just to get them out of the way sooner. Yet I also think it's important to pace myself and to let old Kanji sink in as I don't have immediate vocabulary for all Kanji I learn (following KKLC but learning Kanji faster than words).

>>17032680
Which method is that? Learning to write Kanji? What is it ineffective for exactly?

>>17032685
Are you quoting me? I don't remember having said that. Anyway, KKLC covers 2300 Kanji and that'll be the majority of them. I'm learning to write all of those and the others I'll just remember by recognition.

>>17032705
Are you the poster I replied to? I'm doing quite a lot besides learning to draw Kanji y'know. I have revamped my learning method a couple weeks ago and now I'm learning 20-40 new words a day, acquiring new grammar every day and squeezing in what time is left to enjoy Japanese material. Basically my progress has been stunning (especially the last month after my revamp), but as I am reviewing everything I do in Anki (vocabulary, grammar, producing Kanji), I am left with the fear that it might end up too much when I'll start my occupation.

>>17032725
I see, so despite me having said that I do a lot more than learning to write Kanji, you automatically assume I do nothing but learn Kanji and therefore have no understanding of Japanese. I mean that has to be some sort of autism, no?
