Spring is classic Reimu homing shot
Summer is weak spread shot
Autumn is a forward firing shot
Winter is Illusion laser

Spring release eats all of your saved up season but its effect is larger the more you have. it's basically a mini bomb
Summer is a smaller effect but it only eats one charge of season
Autumn surrounds you in the effect and makes you go FAAAAAAAAAST the more season charges you have
Winter leaves it's effect in one spot and powers up your shot for it's duration. more charges means longer lasting

Not him, but the main advantage of summer is that each mini-bomb only costs 1 to use. This is actually really useful because if you think about it most of the time all you need to get out of a bad spot is that little bit of time, so at full power that's like 6 bombs before you run out. I think summer in general is good, not just on Marisa.

>>16983881
Cirno at full power plus full summer power turns stages into a joke. You don't even have to try. It's true that she isn't very good at bosses but enemies die basically as soon as they get onscreen with Cirno. That said, I still prefer the other characters to her, even Reimu, but still.

Does anyone actually expect ZUN to keep score extends in the final version of HSiFS

I think it's unlikely, on Lunatic with the Autumn shot type you can get 20 million score (so 3 extends) on stage one alone by just pressing C and moving around a ton and when you sit on top of a boss with it, you can essentially spam it. It doesn't even void your spell card bonus.

If he doesn't keep score extends, how do you think the life pieces will work in this game? I think it's gonna be tied to how much you clear with season releases, like if you clear a certain amount of bullets a life piece will pop out, and this amount should probably be more than what you could clear with the autumn level 1 release unless you're shotgunning with it probably

16:9 is becoming a standard. 16:10/8:5 is almost dead. Dream on.

Supporting multiple aspect ratios/resolutions is something that usually is present due to an engine supporting it. Supporting multiple resolutions without using a AAA game engine like Unreal or Unity is something hard enough that most people don't bother, so the fact that ZUN supports 3 different ones is pretty amazing. You'll notice there isn't a drop-down for whatever resolution you want in some games, you have 3 to pick from. As someone who has dabbled in game-development, I know this means ZUN custom programmed those resolutions for the game, which is a giant pain in the ass. But I'm appreciative that he did this because this means his games run much more efficiently than if he were to use a AAA game engine.

It's actually more common for doujin games to use 4:3 instead of 16:9, and touhou has always been 16:9, so it's probably never going to happen, especially because, like I said before, ZUN doesn't use a AAA game engine and supporting multiple aspect ratios is even harder than supporting multiple resolutions.

tl;dr Never gonna happen, too hard without using an engine, dream on dork.

The bombs also refund themselves, so at the end of the day you'll probably have significantly more than 6 of them.

Tap stream them slowly. The only one tough one is her very first wave (boss music/conversation hasn't started yet) if you're not on Reimu. For that one, if you are playing Reimu, start halfway up the wall on either side, stream down, towards the other wall, then up the other wall very slowly. At 3+ power you should get her before time runs out. If you aren't playing Reimu, you'll need to misdirect it, which is easier at certain times than others but is hard to explain. When in doubt look up LNNN runs.

Spring briefly clears bullets in an area around you. Radius scales with season level.

Summer is similar to spring, but the area doesn't scale at all - in exchange, it only costs one sub-option, instead of losing all of them. It's good if you're looking for a panic button in a survival run. On the other hand, the options aren't very good.

Fall gives you GOES FAST and clears bullets in a small area that follows you, higher season level increases its duration. Hilariously overpowered on higher difficulties, and the uncontested best pick for scoring.

Winter is similar to fall (small area, long duration), but the area is stationary and it boosts your attack power instead of your speed. Good for dealing damage if you're able to drop it at point-blank. The options deal pretty high damage as well.

Note that while they clear bullets, they don't actually make you invincible - I learned the hard way that you'll still die if you run into an enemy. Also, you can't deathbomb with them.

So what's the power ranking for lunatic?

Fall > summer > winter > spring?

>fall top tier for best release despite mediocre shot
>summer second for multiple releases and okay shot for taking out stage enemies
>winter third for mediocre release and really good shot
>spring last for pretty underwhelming shot and okay release

It's super easy to collect season points on lunatic from all the bullets, primary shot is much more important than secondary, and score gives lives, so that makes the release of a season more important than the shot. The only exception here is the winter shot, which fucking tears up bosses.

Pretty much agree with that for now.

Fall is easily the best on Lunatic. Unless the real game changes things around, no other season can come close in score or general usefulness. Winter might end up being better than Summer in the main game when you get to the later bosses or the extra stage but no way of knowing now. I feel like spring has the potential to get more score than summer or winter by timing a big charge just right in the bosses face but that would be an extremely unsave strategy to pull off, especially multiple times.

It's released around your character and follows your exact position, eating up all the bullets you run into. This allows you to charge right into the most dense packs of bullets and quickly go back out. The release is instantly charged again because of the hundreds of bullets you just absorbed and can be used almost right away again. Eating up bullets with your release not only gives you score but also increases the point item values in general (that number under your power). This way you quickly get even more score.

Meanwhile, all the other releases do not move and have to be placed in just the right spots to eat lots of bullets. Getting into dense areas is super dangerous and going right on to the bullet spawn points is often not possible.

It's impossible to say. Autumn's the odd one out here for having one objectively best match in Aya, as her traits suit the hyper-scoring method that autumn lends itself to.
For example winter give you high-damage, but very low spread options. You can argue that this is best for Marisa because it results in the highest damage output on single-targets, primarily bosses. Or you can argue that it's best for Reimu or Cirno to make up for their low single-target damage, and to supplement their otherwise entirely spread-based shottypes for stage segments. Without winter, both character suffer at quickly killing big fairies.

Doesn't autumn just make you go super fast regardless of character anyway? With base Reimu you might generate even more items in the long run with the homing shot.

I'm a non-scoring, Normal-mode playing casual. I was completely guessing at what the other characters could score.
Point is, Aya's score potential is exponentially higher than anything else the other characters can dream of.

>>16990363
When you use the Release, your speed is increased a lot for its duration, but your character's base movement speed also plays a part. Aya is the fastest, so during Autumn Release she's still the fastest. Another big factor is her bomb, which gives her invincibility frames for the whole duration and can be popped at the side of the screen so that it's not damaging the boss or clearing the bullets in the center, meaning you can freely graze a shitton of stuff while the bomb is going off. The only other character with a similarly functioning bomb is Cirno, but she's the slowest character in the cast so it obviously doesn't work nearly as well.

Summer is strange to me.

I think it's the most economical option release wise in that each release will prevent the player for being hit for a decent amount of time while only consuming one option.

But, the options feel so worthless in boss fights. Like, what's the point of a monkey being conservative about flinging shit? It's shit. There's a lot of it and it's just sitting around. Might as well fling it at someone.

Exponential growth is faster than other kinds of growth, but saying a number is "exponentially" greater than another is nonsensical since the bigger number is also just a multiple of the smaller one.
If Aya had a mechanic unique to her that allowed her to increase the PIV, that would still only make her score growth a higher-order polynomial growth (say ^3) than the other characters' score (also polynomial, say ^2) growth.

That said, yes, "exponential" is inappropriate. Aya's score growth should just be a linear scale of other characters' score growth.

I feel like it would be smarter for me to use Reimu Winter on normal than Aya, since Aya's cheese wheel doesn't have the volume of bullets of Lunatic to feed on, but I've waited so long to play with Aya and I'm not going to pass up this opportunity.

Say for example you want to release every time you gain a bar. Every other type has to give up their shot entirely to do this because even if they stockpile first, they consume it all in their release. Summer can stockpile up to 5 and just release every time they get to 6, getting the same release frequency while maintaining an almost full subshot the entire time.

Basically Fall/Winter/Spring make you choose between release and shot, while Summer lets you have both, which makes it a very good stage sub. You can also spam release against bosses very hard. If not for the forced ~1 second time gap between releases I'm pretty sure you could just straight invincibility some bosses to death.

Still a couple things I'd like some help with

1) What are the differences between the seasons with Reimu? I still haven't quite figured it? What does fall or winter do thats so different and effective?

2) When I release my season, do I move around to absorb the bullets and re-charge? Some bosses seem to have shitty moments for this.

>> No.16991093

>>16991069
>1) What are the differences between the seasons with Reimu? I still haven't quite figured it? What does fall or winter do thats so different and effective?
The seasons determine your sub-options, which each have their own shot (each one mimics one of the playable characters) and their own release. Those two are notable because fall has the best release, and winter has the most damaging option shot.
>2) When I release my season, do I move around to absorb the bullets and re-charge? Some bosses seem to have shitty moments for this.
You want to make sure that the release circle blocks as many bullets as possible. In fall's case, that involves moving around a lot to ram yourself into all the bullets, but the other seasons are more stationary.

https://p.fuwafuwa.moe/smgqup.rpy

Here's what happened the last time I tried release spamming on normal. I think it will go better when I get a better overall grasp of releasing. There's no practice mode available to mess with either.

>>16991069
The seasons affect your options and your release bomb. Winter's laser packs a punch that Reimu can use to supplement her homing shot and the release hurts if you drop it on a boss and bolsters you offensive power too.

Fall's options aren't as strong compared to Winter from what I can tell but the release field follows you and makes you go crazy fast, so you can run amok and collect bullets to charge up another release.

>> No.16991113

So question. When you release, a brief moment afterwards, a small number appears above your character (like "+7350"). What's that?

>> No.16991124

>>16991069
>1
The season choice gives you different shot options. Filling your gauge in the lower-left by collected leaves/petals/snow/etc gives you extra options below your character. Spring is more homing shots, Summer is Cirno's icicle spread, Fall is Aya's forward-barrage, and Winter is Marisa's illusion lasers.
The Release also changes of course. Spring's is a circle around her that gets bigger the more gauge she has filled. Summer is like Spring but only uses 1 level at a time, rather than all of it at once. Of course this means it's only a small circle on your location, and doesn't get any bigger. Autumn fixates the circle on your position, and gives you a movement speed boost. More levels gives a longer duration, same as for the Winter shottype, which boosts your damage if you stay in the circle, which just stays in place.
>2
Only if you're using Autumn. Every bullet that touches the circle created by Releasing is turned into season points which fill your gauge, so using Release at the right time will give you more Release.
