As a forward I'm pretty bad at this review business.
Just finished the Leyline trilogy, that was a really enjoyable ride.
It was never boring, every episode was genuinely either amusing or interesting. Felt quite well paced, even in the less important episodes i thoroughly enjoyed the antics.
As for the characters, with a couple of exceptions (I'm looking at you late additions) I was really taken with them all. Nice to see more than one male support character. Overall I think Lui was probably my favorite.
Story wise I saw pretty much all the twists coming, a couple did catch me by surprise but they were mostly things I'd seen before.
I really have very little to criticize about this trilogy, I would have appreciated a little more fleshing out on the sub heroine routes I suppose. I think they were all two hours at a stretch.
Honestly I'm really looking forward to whatever Unison Shift does in the future, I had good fun with Flyable Heart too.

Finished Tsukikage no Simulacre. Quite a bit weaker then I hoped it would be.

It mostly suffers from having a story that's why too short for its length which results into a lot of repetition in small doses all the time. Especially because there are a lot of branches, as enforced as they may be.

I'm not too happy how character are handled either. A lot of them have little to nothing to do with the plot. The first "path" you take after the free version is focused on a girl who literally doesn't matter for anything and might as well not even exist. The romance is generally not existing either and completely built on "she liked him before the game started already" and "shit's hitting the fan, so let's roll with this". There's little to no "fun times" with the characters, so a character completely irrelevant for the plot in the end sticks out pretty badly. And most characters end up like that, even if they have something to do with the plot, they are just "on the way".
The game is structured really weirdly in that regard. Kinda funny how it feels both padded with way too much repeating things here and there, and yet rushed at the same time as a lot of potential in regards to the relationships between characters and their importance gets wasted.

I still think that at its core is a nice story, although part of the final climax was a bit silly and forced, but it wasn't pretty long and ultimately didn't matter much. That said, the way it was presented was.. suboptimal. Music was nice, could've used a bit more art at a few key-points though. Weird how at first it seemed to try and avoid bloody scenes but later on showed some.. probably because the first weren't young girls........... oh man. Pic related. A bit nsfw obviously.

I mean I'm straight so maybe I shouldn't care, but something about game after game after game being chock-full of nothing but girls beside the protag gets almost bland after awhile. For an idol to continue her career, if she isn't a virgin she must pretend to be, and if she has a boyfriend she must pretend not to. It's also well understood that some companies will pressure idols into sex with promises of career advancement.
This has the effect of making any discussion about an idol's purity hazy at best, and we all know how big of an issue purity is for otaku. Most idol VNs contain non-virgin heroines, NTR, corruption, or some combination of the three. Niche stuff.
There's also a lot less crossover than you might think between idol-stalking otaku and otaku who chainsmoke VNs, as both are very time consuming as well as being highly expensive if you do them legally. And that's in addition to the 2D/3D split.
If you're desperate for one, you might try that yuri nukige Watashi dake no Idol. It only has light NTR in it. (The idol NTRs you from your girlfriend.)

>> No.16966148

>>16966037

To add to this: Idol stuff usually focuses on the girls and their relationships with each other, rather than some dude. It's kind of the same reason why the typical "magic girl" genre is pretty much not existing in VN, aside of the different 18+ take with tentacles and mind-break and whatnot. Idol stuff is very similar.

Eroge require an important penis of sorts that needs to get worshiped to an extend. I've seen a few examples where the penis was a little less important and a given route of a girl was less about her wanting the penis, but rather about maybe a friend, her future or something else. It's usually not too popular. The protagonist, often really little more than a wall to bounce back dialogue with an attached penis, has to be very important. It.. hinders stuff.

Well, this however is all just a generic view on things: Eroge don't actually absolutely require any of this, and can still be pretty popular. It's just risky and needs the writers to actually leave the holy book of 50 eroge tropes behind they base all their works on. You can find a few works including magical girls or idols here and there. With little exception though, they completely fail to produce what that'd normally mean, as they just make a normal eroge with those "types" without ever entering the respective genres.

Honestly, I'd pass on dudes if given the choice. Anything a male best friend can do a tomboy lesbian best friend can do better. If a VN isn't trying to have a real plot, only maintaining the shell of one as a framing device for cute girls and romance, then why have a recurring character who's completely the opposite of what your audience wants? It's like putting a rascist chinese charicature in your generic romance movie. Nobody you could reasonably expect to be in your audience wants to see that.
I don't have anything against dudes. I watch reverse harem anime, I read shoujo manga, I even read otome VNs. (Normally because the lead girl looks cute, but yeah.) I have no problem with men in VNs with actual plots, or in comedy VNs, or in anything at besides vanilla nukige and moege. I'm just tired of starting up a moege, reading it for an hour, and not seeing a heroine.
Men can be fine as long as they're kept out of the way, popping up only when needed and given as few art assets as possible. The way they are normally used in moege is anything but that. They swagger around, taking up screenspace and crying about how the protagonist gets laid more than them. Why should a story about how great love is have a major character love has abandoned? It's a thematic own goal. The only thing possibly worse than that is when a heroine falls in love with them, which does happen and is as cucky and disgusting as you'd expect.
The only good thing about male characters in moege is that they make the rare reverse trap heroine possible, and they are lovely.

>> No.16966299

>>16966253
>If a VN isn't trying to have a real plot,
It's not about plot, it's about friendships.
Moege are half romance games, half comedy games about friends. In pure romance games like Hoshi Ori, yes a friend isn't needed, no characters really are needed except the protag and the heroine. But in moege male friends are invaluable for enhancing the comedy and friendship aspects of the game - and most moege aren't just "framing for cute girls and romance", most are seishun simulators with a good amount of comedy and SOL beyond romance and cuteness.

I agree with >>16966299 in that a big benefit of a stronger male cast is better comedy and group dynamics. It really improves the whole slice of life aspect of the game. If it's basically a dating-sim sort of deal then yeah, not needed.
In almost every instance I've seen it attempted, a decent male cast has been a plus to the game.

>> No.16966494

Price has nothing to do with its issues. Like I said, it feels both padded and rushed at the same time. They could've reduced the content by a third and the game would've been overall better.. or actually make a worthwhile conclusion giving answers to the little mysteries built and use all the characters in a climax. But as it was, the first two heroine "routes" ended up being utterly useless and irrelevant, and they don't really work as normal standalone routes either.

It's a messy work. That sums it up. And to me it leaves a rather bitter aftertaste, as it could've been a lot more. Everything was assembled. And you'd think the author would realize something is wrong when he writes the ending/epilogue where all characters get to comment one final time, and one heroine has never even appeared in this "true route" before and is like "hey, you are back in this town? Awesome!".

Kaziklu Bey was great, obviously I knew it wouldn't be as good as the main Dies Irae but they made a pretty solid attempt. Really follows the structure of serious, powerful introduction -> fun SoL -> occasional fights mixed in -> epic long final climax -> moving epilogue.

If I had to raise a complaint it's that I didn't really like Rui that much, he wasn't particularly fun or interesting, but the other characters more than made up for that. Of course Beatrice overshadowed everyone else a bit by being so perfect in every possible way, but Claudia was a great heroine too, shame we'll probably never see her again.

In other words, this was never written as just a free game and then extended. Just reading the free part is bringing you to the opening movie of the paid version for a reason. Most moege are <1mb for one play-through. You can pretty much try anything there. Try to avoid ones with enforced route-order or true-routes. That's kinda borderline leaving the moege genre already, as they obviously try to tell SOME kind of main-story so the approach of just reading one route isn't working too well there.

For the whole game to be around that length you can check out mid-price games, for example anything by alcot honeycomb. Keep in mind they don't only do moege, though it's a mid-price label.

>> No.16968165

>>16968123

Aokana has a long common route as far as I know, Daitoshokan is actually not long for one playthrough. But it has a lot of "parts", so the whole game is a little on the longer side. (a good 2 mb)

As far as brands go.. I don't think there's much else, aside of Campus doing their (usually) single heroine moege. Though several of them still take place in the same setting.. I think.
Similarly there's short stuff like Sailove (2 pretty short routes), and feng's recent "seiiki" series though that's also again one protag and the same setting.

That said, you could also try old games. Eroge became on average longer. Taking a look at egs and playtimes helps as well. Unless it's a super low rated game in the first place so people don't read everything, <15h average games should be what you want. Only really helps for double-checking once you have a title you are interested in though. Oh and.. the x cation games are a good idea as well if you don't mind a very "one heroine" focused work and some dating sim elements. (less in newer ones?) I only ever tried one of those (purely x cation and the route I read was between 500 and 600kb as far as I remember, and I'd assume that's roughly normal for that series.)

Completely done with Noraneko now. The other 3 routes after Patricia's were pretty much like expected. It doesn't really make much sense for any of them to happen, as all of them rewrite Patricia too much, and it just feels weird for the main-heroine to just randomly shift at the branching point. The common route feels mostly like it's part of Patricia's route.

That said, one of the big strengths of the game is the group-dynamic, and I've yet to see an eroge that gets the whole "group of friends" things better than this one. Admittedly, different groups of friends are different and that's also where taste comes into play. But this bunch felt like pretty "real" to me. A whole bunch of random talking, messing with each other but still being visibly close, getting exciting about random people doing random things in the school and laughing at it and so on. A lot of this is carried by Nobuchina, but she still needs the rest of the cast to work well obviously. And you get more of this if you read the other routes.

Aside of this it was interesting to see "not route" Patricia one more time to see that her character does indeed get weaker in her route, but not by a whole lot. Apart of that I ended up liking Kuroki way more than I thought (outside of romance stuff), and Asuhara quite a bit less than I thought.
The was also some story stuff, but I skipped almost all of it. What little I saw looked mostly pretty painful to be honest. The author is at his best when he does the "semi serious, semi fun" stuff that dominated Patricia's route. Although her route had some weird dips here and there as well towards the end.

All in all I had a lot of fun with this. For the sequel I just hope there's generally more of this group. And I expect great things for Nobuchina's route. She pretty much represents the cat thoughts and the hero story, so with both of that could be already done a lot. Then again, a half serious, half fun story about her family could be also fun. After-stories and the other stuff doesn't really interest me. I just hope the new characters aren't just killing the group or something.

Okay, so we're talking about a book that eschews a plot in favor of focusing solely on the theme of youth, and romance is included as a element of that theme. I can understand that. You can have romance in a book without it being a romance novel. Frankly, I'd never considered that perspective until now.
But you've got to understand where I'm coming from too. I don't care about youth as a theme. It just doesn't mean much to me. How am I, a person who only wants to read romance VNs, supposed to avoid the seishun ones?
I've never seen a male character on the cover of a visual novel who wasn't the protagonist. I've never heard of a VN that advertised on the box that you will spend solid hours of reading it without anything romantic happening. I can skip plot VNs by reading the synopsis, and do, but the synopsis of a romance novel and a seishun novel are the same.
If this type of story was avoidable I'd avoid it. The only way I've found that works is never reading VNs rated anything under R-18. It helps but I still end up with way too many romance-lacking VNs. I tried reading only vanilla nukige for a while but it turns out that I need at least one date per H-scene. So I just have to drop VNs super aggressively, like five a day. It's frustrating. If anyone has any ideas I'd love to hear them.

>>16966450
In a comedy VN, I whole hog agree. Sausage the place up.
But group dynamics? The dynamics are between the protagonist and the heroines, everything else is parsley. If you need a genki character for group dynamics add a genki heroine. Having a penis only matters to group dynamics if the penis is going in something. Saying most VNs should have a male character for group dynamics is like saying most VNs should have a futa character for group dynamics.

Yeah no see I violently disagree with this about as hard as it is possible to disagree with something.

There are group dynamics that you just cannot have with female characters. Since these are VNs and most likely romance or moege ones, the minute you introduce a character with a vagina the expectation is we're going to at least see that vagina if not get to get up in there. Even if she's a minor character with no route she'll either have an unrequited crush on the only penis in a 30km radius (the MC) or else gush effusively about how yasashii he is or whatever.

That crosses out about half the possible dynamics you can have with a person. You can't ask someone for advice about the inevitable relationship drama issues if their judgement is flawed by virtue of wishing they were riding your baloney pony instead. You can't hang out and just shoot the shit with someone if you know they have just as much an ulterior motive as you. It turns every single interaction in the game into a romantic one, and christ it's not like there's a shortage of those, especially common route bullshit where you need to survive a fucking onslaught of thirsty bitches in order to make it to the one girl you're actually aiming for.

See you might have a point that I'd happily acknowledge, if it weren't for the fact most vns are positively drowning in romance interactions. It is not a rarity, it's fucking ubiquitous. Exhausting, even. Common routes in particular I find are the worst for this since they feel the need to give all 3-6 girls at least a half dozen scenes each that are basically interviews for the job position of "MC's penis wrangler" before you finally get to tell the ones you're not interested in to take a cold shower and a hike. Give us a break. Give us someone the MC can talk to or consult about all this sudden attention to his genital area, who isn't themselves competing for it.

tl;dr boy-girl group dynamics absolutely cannot be imitated by just adding more girls, adding girls you can't fuck isn't fair for a moege, and there are much-needed roles to play that girls can't fill.

This is patently untrue. As a random counterexample see the side girls in Fureraba, there's no romance between them and MC there at all, they add a lot to the group dynamic and the depth of the school setting and dialogue, and it works great.

Alright but if there's no romance between them at all, why not make them a male character? As long as they're cute and female, someone reading it is going to want some HCGs, route or no route, flirting or no flirting. And it does vary by novel, right now I'm reading Istoria and there's about a dozen characters, all female except for the one very clearly demarcated *big bad eveil guy*, and almost every single one of the other female characters has expressed some sort of
interest in the MC.

And yeah, I really do not remember either of them.

For reference of something where a mixed guy/girl group dynamic works really well, koiiro soramoyou is great in that respect. The common route is long as hell and I don't even mind because there are plenty of non-romantic interactions.

But (and I know it's not fair tacking this on to the end of this post because now you have to either respond or lose face) I'm not trying to convert or convince you, you've got your own opinion and I've got mine and honestly, neither of us are really going to influence the VN scene, let alone each other's mind. >why not make them a male character?

>> No.16974197

>>16974126
>Anything a male best friend can do a tomboy lesbian best friend can do better
Why? How? You say this like it's a fact of nature but I don't follow. Is it because she has tits and is nice to look at? Then in that case, like I said, a good chunk of the audience is going to want to fuck her, lesbian or no lesbian.

Why do you assume the audience wants nothing to do with dudes? I know they're not vns, but look at the Persona games, widely recognized as high school simulators. Yeah people will fight to the death over best waifus, but people also really liked the male characters, Junpei, Akihiko, Yosuke, Kenji, (haven't played 5 so I'll leave it there). They offer relationship dynamics that are not available to the girl characters. If we're talking escapism, you get the respect of your friends as well as getting the girl of your dreams. How is this bad or the opposite of what the audience wants?

>The way they are normally used in moege is anything but that. They swagger around, taking up screenspace and crying about how the protagonist gets laid more than them
I honestly have no idea what eroge you're playing because it can't be the same as the ones I am. Yeah you'll have the typical Sunohara bitch boy whining about how the protagonist has a dozen girls in his harem and he has none, but he's *right*. From an objective perspective, it's fucking ridiculous. He has every right to make that complaint. And as for "swaggering around," the only times I've read something where a bro character swaggers around it's because he's an idiot who doesn't realize how unwanted he is, and it's played for comedy.

>Why should a story about how great love is have a major character love has abandoned?
Then give them their own girl! If you're alright with female characters that don't crush on the MC, let them crush on this guy! If they're not a heroine, then what's the problem? Then you get to have some nice scenes where the two of you can help each other out with relationship problems. Like dokodonuts, which had a really good bro character with his own established girlfriend, and it added a lot of really nice moments where you get to sit and talk about what it's like being in love.

No they aren't. Read Chrono Clock. If you really honestly want to read a book about a side character being in a relationship, Chrono Clock is the most extreme example I've ever had the misfortune of running into.
I will never understand why you would want that, though. I mean, I thought I was most open-minded nutcase here for my willingness to reluctantly accept a heroine not being a virgin, but you guys blow me way out of the water. You are not only willing to accept, but actually want a girl in a VN who does not have a route with you but ends up fucking some other guy. You are against the idea of having a female character in a VN that doesn't have a route UNLESS some other dude fucks her. I'm sorry, I just don't get it.
Since you asked, I will try to explain: when you read a moege, you self-insert as the main character, right? You fall in love with the female characters, right? Some have routes, some don't. In both cases, you imagine yourself as their boyfriend. With the ones that have routes, you have CGs and text to help you, with the other girls you just have your imagination. At no point in this equation do the girls have any penis besides yours go inside them, because that is the opposite of you being their boyfriend. Exceptions exist, like moms, but that is the rule.
I'm glad there are books written for you, I think everyone should have books written for them. You can understand that I'm reasonably upset that I keep running into them.

No. If that would actually happen, nobody would read more than one route. After all if you actually seriously care about a girl, why would you ever do another route then?

I don't think this dev should attempt mystery. The first question and it already fucked up its logic. Hey the door was locked, so the maid of the one with the master key couldn't possibly have entered that room. Especially not to put a letter there written by her master who, again, has a master key. Why would she possibly be able to enter that room?!? The only way would've been by picking the lock, or entering by window, right?

I mean.. that's pretty sad. Especially because the author didn't even forget about this, he just considered it "not possible" for shallow reasons like "privacy" and whatnot, which makes about 0 sense in this situation. (It makes sense with normal everyday stuff, but not when the maid would get tasked to deliver a letter)

Ah well, Lump of Sugar. Not like I expected much.

Just wanted to add to the conversation, with what somebody said earlier, persona does the guy relationships amazingly. To a point where I care for some of the guy's routes more than some of the girls as they're that well written or deal with more serious or more interesting issues.
Guy characters can be amazing.and well done rather than some comic relief character who is purposely written poorly to make the reader feel better about themselves, however that requires good writing and I don't think many writers can write interesting male supporting characters. Not to mention that many otaku just buy eroge for a short romance that lead to sex with a open ending.
I personally get more out of longer romances and prefer it that way sex doesn't bother me as much. However for eroge it's different.
I feel that we see eroge as porn as they give us sex scenes and with that we come under the impression that every girl must have a moment with the mc or have sex scene.
Like picture if you watched a porno and there were two hot girls and only one them got naked and fucked while the other didn't do anything.
You'd be kinda upset even if they advertised it as that one girl getting fucked and you watched it for that, you'd still feel kinda unfulfilled.
You'd want more than they advertised.
Same with eroge I want all the girls to be romanced even if they aren't romance-able, the fact a girl has a sprite makes me want to see her interacted sexually, romantically or in some way with the MC.
I guess its kinda like I view it as a medium that panders to my needs for romance/sex rather than see it as a writer's vision.
However that said the writer's vision is heavily influence by the company which in turn is influenced by the consumer's desire to fuck girls with underdeveloped short romance plots.
Eroge with unromancable girls are fine but when come into it I normally expect pandering to the upmost extreme, unless it has a decent story/writting it's a let down honestly.

tldr; Guy characters can be amazing if well written but that requires good writers or an interesting story.
I personally feel like a porno should have every women on camera having sex rather than having some that are not having sex. Eroge is pretty much seen as porn in a sense that we play them to romance and to fuck the girls.
Good writing is an exception but otherwise I want all girls romance-able.

Taking things too much for granted is killing enjoyment of what's offered. Overexposure.

What makes a heroine special if every female is fuckable anyway? If you want that, you should be going for nukige. But outside of nukige there SHOULD be different values as well.
Fact however is, that eroge trend heavily towards acting as if they are nukige, no matter what. It's not just more ero. 月影のシミュラクル has pretty much 2 filler heroines. They are there to offer more naked boobs, while having literally no other importance. Is that how it really should be? That game isn't even a moege, nor does it have much romance.

In eroge the ero became way too important I feel. Everything else is secondary. People who don't think ero is the most important thing about all eroge really get the short stick for a while now.

Sometimes the shooting game is fun and I'll enjoy that and maybe might even just play for the game itself and not the prize, however what's the point if it's not fun and I played a shit game all for a prize I can't win.

I understand what you a playing for: To get into the girls' pants. But you seem to forget that there's more to enjoy about girls. It doesn't need to end with something lewd. Not even in a moege.

If you want to understand this view, watch some anime again. One of the many cute girls doing cute things shows. No, don't go to sadpanda. Just watch these shows. Until you understand.

I can understand where you are coming from. It's essentially the fault of VNs themselves because they make people think like that with the current trend. If you don't look critically at them, and just play a good amount without for example balancing this with other games, anime or whatever, you can get into that mindset. You aren't the only one there either. Sometimes when you look at EGS and whatnot, the first importance is to "conquer" girls. It's not about the girls, their story or anything, it's about "conquering" them. A messy situation, especially as conquering them isn't even remotely hard anymore.

It's weird especially because now we have the whole conquering thing without any of the effort. At least with dating sims there was some sort of progress, or journey to be had. But with a lot of modern games focused on "romance" the girls are heads-over-heels with the MC from the beginning, even the supposedly cold ones. You get all the rewards without any of the work, which describes the average young person's mindset today. It's kind of why I can't get into a lot of those "romance" games, a lot of the girls seem like they would spread their legs for anyone. They don't really bond or connect with MC. It's just boring and completely sterile of any meaningful or entertaining interactions, aside from the sex (which even that is debatable at times).

> It really makes you feel the thrill of actually going after girls

That wouldn't be too necessary, if there'd be more girls without routes. It the same thing really. Anything that's not a given becomes more special.
Thus the idea of higher difficulties in games.
Thus shipping of characters in ongoing series.
Thus the whole waifu wars if it's one of those series.
Thus rooting for your favorite characters in dire situations.

Without any trouble, it can quickly become stale and flat. And when it comes to heroines in VNs, that "trouble" is not being able to get into the pants of any girl you want. That in itself makes it more special if you actually can do so with all girls you care about. This is why VN devs got the great idea to just make it possibly to get into all pants, as such their game will stand out more easily. Unfortunately if everyone does that, it becomes the standard, which is where we are pretty much at this point, killing the advantage that once gave. By the way, the average heroine became easier to "conquer" for the similar reasons. So, what now?

Okay, after reading all the male character discussions at earlier posts, give me 1 VN as the most exemplar example where male support character given the treatment that you want or close to it, without any heavy drama or Nakige-grade plot twist bullshit, because often times I only find male support characters on those kind of VN.

I actually have that in my hard disk during my hoarding days, but I relent installing it when I find out after reading somewhere that instead of fulfilling my expectation of MC and the main heroine having time of their life together along with the lovey-dovey stuff inbetween, I have to endure 3 routes of relationship drama between the MC and the main heroine and they not getting together in the end until the unlockable true route.
You recommending it gives me another reason to try it, and I would after I finish my current VN, but tell me this: Are the relationship drama in those routes before the true route really that painful to read? Just preparing myself mentally before reading through it.

I.. wouldn't use that word. I mean, I have never met a person who told me he traveled several times back in time to get with the girl he likes.

It's just a (melo)drama-thick VN. You like that or don't. Personally I think these stories work better if you see something crashing and burning once, and then recovering past that, rather than having different routes of crashing and then a "successful" route enforced last. It's just cheap if you ask me. You don't have to bother thinking about how to fix things.

Of course I've not read it, so I might be wrong, but that's what I feel when I hear "multiple failure routes and then one successful route with one heroine only".

One thing I don't like is when VNs too frequently switch perspectives from the MC to show things from other characters' point of view. It's a fine narrative technique in other mediums but VNs are meant to be self-inserted and experienced from the point of view of the protagonist, it ruins immersion when you do this so often. I remember getting annoyed at Senmomo for this too.

I don't like pointing to a single example like this cause you know, it just takes a single disagreement for the point to be weakened infinitely.
That said, Shuuji from Akeiro hits close to the ideal for me. He really makes the game straight-up better for me by adding a lot of humor the dialogue a girl likely wouldn't have, as well as been a nice bro. Pretty much the only problem with him is that they make him very cowardly as an excuse to get him away from the main plot (which involves ghosts n stuff). In other words, from a comedy/SOL standpoint I remember him as a very solid and valuable male character, but from a plot standpoint he could use a lot of work.

I prefer not having knowledge the protagonist doesn't, dramatic irony doesn't lend itself well to vns since you have some control over the plot but not enough in the right places, so knowing he's about to do the dumb thing or that heroine C is about to sacrifice herself to do the dumb thing, it doesn't make me feel tension or apprehension or whatever the desired feeling is, just an inescapable sense of 'oh christ you idiots' like watching a bad horror movie where they keep saying "let's split up to cover more ground!".

I was searching around for a VN and I found this collection of 5200 Japanese books as .txt files. It addition to a metric shit ton of light novels, regular fiction, and hilariously poorly translated works of the western canon it also has transcripts of a few popular VNs, like Cross Channel, Tsuyokiss, F/SN and Higurashi . Perfect for getting that VN fix on the go. Unless the person looking over your shoulder can also read Japanese, no one will be able to tell what you're reading. It even has three novels by ZUN!

So, I read Hatsukoi * Syndrome (main-part) this afternoon-ish. It was pretty alright, but nothing else.

The idea here is that the first love failed and something else starts, with random magic crap added so you have at least some kind of bullshit drama at random points.
Unfortunately the first love obviously didn't fail because the relationship didn't work out, or because the girl in question didn't like the protagonist or anything interesting, so in the end that point ended up moot and you get yourself a kinetic novel about a love-triangle where the less interesting girl wins. Of course.

The engine is also pretty meh. No way to skip effects with a click, no way for forced ctrl skip and the initial setting were pretty ass as well. (i.e. sound balance)
There's still the after-story I haven't read, but I'd assume that's mostly ero. Then again, for the supposedly 4 scenes you probably don't need all those 15 CG + 3 SD CG, and some variations of older ones are also missing, so I guess I'll still check it out later.

I mean for the most part it was solid if chunni as fuck (but who am I kidding, that's what I came for), I just could not get attached to most of the main characters except coolguy Reiji and Momiji. Protagonist #2 and his girl were forgettable and unfun, and I wasn't a fan of Sakura and by god that end reveal about her did absolutely nothing to improve it.

I'm torn, since the rerelease bonus scenario Momiji route was kind of not great, a silly Heaven's Feel knockoff complete with possessed Saber, but I so badly wanted more Momiji in my life that I liked it better than the original ending, which had a really awful penultimate bit with that blue haired slutty ex of Reiji's and some really, really dumb plot reveals.

But at least the final fight was everything I hoped for.

I'm sad that you always have girls beating up MC and calling him a masochist and stuff, but there are no actual femdom routes, like the MC and heroine having an actual BDSM relationship. I'd really take that over girls who are just abusive bitches like in Ikikoi.

Hard femdom are in isolated girls, for a reason. I actually read some Ikikoi and tried one femdom VN at some point, and it's.. heavy. I like my "strong" girls and I suppose light femdom, but I'm out when all I hear is "buta" and the ero includes hot wax and butt penetration.. of the dude. (Sole exception is pic related, but that was more of a "you fucked up son" scene where the girl showed the protagonist what happens if he's too much of a sissy I guess, it wasn't supposed to be arousing.. I think.)

So yeah, I think it's fine that more "normal" VNs keep the femdom on a bit more generally acceptable level. This screen in the previous post is btw. just a joke. Like most of these lines tend to be actually. That girl is a pretty average moe-blob without much special characteristics.

I'm not really so much for the "buta" thing or wax thing. More like just wanting to please the girl and make her happy and slowly the heroine realizes the MC's nature and introduces him to more harsh forms of play. Not just the girl treating the MC like garbage, or using it as punishment. You know, it should be like an actual relationship but with femdom.

Eroge always has a tendency to do these sorts of things without much subtlety though, I mean just look at most "choukyou" games just have the girls break from the beginning. If they can't even get those right I can't imagine them to get femdom right. I will just keep dreaming.

>>16983047

Think about it this way: a guy who is pretty much looks like a female would be pretty much an easy target, correct? To me, being taller and much stronger than the girl, but choosing to submit anyway is more exciting. Also it's easier for me to self-insert into standard MC ikemen or manly masculine dude than some shota or trap. Cross-dressing could still be part of the equation, but it'd be even more humiliating that way.

>>16983206
Wanting to serve a cute pure 2D girl and show her your devotion sure is beta as fuck. Being able to submit and show her your vulnerable sides as well as loving each other completely and entirely is definitely beta as fuck. Having to maintain the facade of being the alpha male in a relationship and lying to each other constantly is truly the apex of a relationship. Let's be real here. Most eroge MCs are what you call "beta" as fuck, no real drive to do anything, they just have the girls push them around in every aspect except sex. It counts more how you act outside of the bedroom than inside I believe.

Serious VN tends to have treat male support character better even when they brushed off when the main plot starts, which is why I asked for examples in VN without heavy drama or plot twist, to show which moege that you feel 'done it right' to the main support character despite, well, being moege that currently only focus on the heroines and less about friends, or at least VN that has moege feel without heavy plots that discard the moege status from the VN itself, or twists that brings the VN to Nakige territory instead.

Like the guy at the start of the thread said, Leyline series has a good cadre of likeable male support characters. The new Utawarerumono games also have tons of SoL bro-up scenes with the protagonist and other males partying and getting wasted together. Both do have drama, but not to the point that the male characters exist solely for it.

If looking for completely moege, Girls Be Ambitious!'s saving grace was the protagonist's group of friends. There's one tomboy childhood friend girl and a total of four males when including the protagonist, and their treatment was definitely leaning more on "dependable bros" rather than "stupid retard butt monkeys of every joke" that heroine focused eroge usually have, and they stay relevant throughout the game.

C;C has awful pacing. Unless you enjoyed having to skip through the game to read those 4 bad heroine routes in-between the common route and true route. And even in the main story there were plenty of overly drawn out and boring sequences, usually when they're trying to instill a sense of horror by making everything slow-paced and over-described.

>> No.16984965

>>16984925
>>16984849
Well here is proof no matter how good your pacing is people will always disagree. Really pacing just means "number of parts I liked" and people like different things.

>> No.16985021

>>16984965
At the point where you have 5? different writers working on a game the pacing is probably gonna be a bit awkward no matter what.

>> No.16985121

>>16985021
Not necessarily. In fact, multiple writers can make the pacing better even, by consulting each other and whatnot. In some companies the writers sit in the same room, talk to each other constantly etc. whereas in others they write their parts in isolation. Obviously the latter doesn't produce the most splendid of results but then again a single writer scenario isn't necessarily exempt from pacing issues either. August is pretty good at making the different writers seamless, Chaos;Child (Over Sky) and the Utawarerumonos are good examples as well. Of course there is even more failures of this, but I think it's more a result of incompetent people rather than the concept itself.

It's been on my mind for a while but I don't know what's up with 'some' of you people in this general. That somehow, with the understanding of the Japanese language, you feel that it increases your worth as a human being and also apparently can double as an insult.

It's honestly pretty sad.
I mean your insult is apparently saying somebody speaks English, though you might spice up your insults a bit and tell somebody to fuck of plebbit or /vg/. Still at least that's progress.

I mean really, how the fuck is calling somebody a monolingual an insult?
People on other websites and boards actually have proper insults, like nigger or faggot.
You know, actual insults?
But calling somebody Monolingual?
I mean I know some of you lead a pretty solitary life, but this is downright pathetic.

And since I feel your autism tendencies urge you to do so, feel free to call me an EOP, because apparently simply talking about localisation, or almost anything not in japan means that I was born in an English speaking country and I don't know Japanese, Arabic, Chinese and English because apparently you know so much about me and everybody else, including the fucking language a person uses to understand basic human speech patterns.

Seriously fuck everybody who does this, it adds nothing to the conversation.

The thing is, threads have topics. They are about a certain something. And this one is:

>This thread is for the discussion of untranslated Japanese visual novels.
>What are you playing? What are you looking forward to? What have you finished? You know the drill.

Some people react harshly because of heavy derailment and ultimately arguments and stupidness that gets caused by it. Every week there is a "translation status" thread on /jp/. It's a nice thread to talk about translations, as people there are looking into that thread because of translations. There's also a thread for learning the language on/jp/. If that's what you want or talk about (i.e. "easy" to read VNs) that's where you go.

And still people come here every now and then for reasons nobody really knows. 4chan isn't the nicest place. You may get told off in a not so nice manner. But usually there's a reason for that.

Looking down on people who can't read Japanese was originally Moogy and his clique of elitist friends kinda thing. I'm pretty sure they developed that attitude as a defense mechanism because people generally judge translated VNs unfavorably so it's easy to just say "the translation sucks go learn Japanese or shut up because you're not qualified to judge VNs otherwise". Now he seems to have toned this down because the quality of translations has improved but this kind of attitude seems to have stuck with those learned-Japanese-to-read-eroge Twitter folks who are still young and too excited over the fact they can read Japanese.

Has the quality of translations actually improved? I haven't read anything translated since 2012, I've only re-read a couple of VN's i read translations of previously and I found the quality to be 'not bad' I guess.
As in I really don't think I could've done a better job myself, even now. I've seen translations ridiculed here a fair bit in my time. I feel a little sorry for the translators though, it really doesn't seem like it would be easy to do well in many cases.

That means, you know, 5 out of 6 doesn't mean most people didn't like her, it means they just had other girls as their favourite. In other words, everyone who voted may have thought of Mahiru as #2, just not as #1. Which isn't so bad.

With all the trackers going down left and right I decided to buy a hard drive or two and start hoarding eroge instead of my typical nyaa pump-and-dump method. And what better place to start with the first vndb entry, Minna de Nyan Nyan (https://vndb.org/v1).).

Right off the bat, what a pain. Easy enough to find in English but the Japanese version, no dice. No nyaa torrent (or any torrent that I could find), all A-S links dead, no google results with DDL sites or anything. So using anon's clubbox guide I went on there and downloaded a 60 kb file that appeared to patch the English release with Japanese text (北米版日本語化無修正). But after downloading both the DL edition and CD-ROM edition of the English game I couldn't figure out what to do with the "patch" files given and gave up on that pursuit.

The full game does seem to be on Clubbox (downloading now at 13 KB/s) so at least there is that even though it is quite slow. No idea if it is available on Share/PD/Baidu. It's clear that if I want to accumulate a decent collection I'll probably have to learn how to use all of those and also probably suck it up and buy a copy of stuff here or there.
