According to Touhou wiki, there's some bio text in Hisoutensoku that indicates Sanae and the Moriya shrine immigrated to Gensokyo a mere "two years ago." Hisoutensoku was released in 2009, meaning Sanae immigrated to Gensokyo around the time of Mountain of Faith, released in 2007.

Yeah, that's about exactly a decade from now. Sanae would be in high school (14-18) when she disappeared, and her graduating class would all now be 24-28 years old.

Pretty good. Text can be elaborated here and there to avoid it seen rushed, as the progression seemed well enought. Maybe a little bit of dialogue as of why the protag make a shrine dedicated to her, and also a more world building to paint the protag desperation and curiosity better. Its a personal nitpick, but maybe lose the curse words and the Occams Razor mention. For a story with a Nip setting maybe its best to lose too many english specialized phrases. a single, mention of Mandela Effect as its grand theme is otherworldly enough.

When I think about it, it actually is a bit of a shame that she's unplayable.
By now she *has* developed a personal shot type of sorts - her homing snakes and exploding frogs. The splash damage effect of the frogs could be easily codified as her unmistakable trademark in future games in particular (in the same vein as, say, Remilia's familiars, Yukari's homing Ran attack or Youmu's charged slashes could), but it seems that ZUN doesn't want any other regulars than Reimu and Marisa.

Of course, a phantasmagoria game would be a great showcase of shot types in personal flavors, as the competition between them would require some creativity beyond the level of your typical power/homing/spread options. But obviously, that's not happening anymore, with ZUN barely managing to churn out a normal game in time every two years.

Sanae's still a regular. She, Sakuya, and Youmu are the more prominent characters who tend to be playable in the bullet hells. Reimu and Marisa being playable is a must, of course, and I'm of the opinion that Sanae shouldn't be in that same boat. As much as I love her, I don't think that would be an ideal decision. Variety is much preferable.

I like how she can be pretty dickish herself (very rarely) and how she's obviously a low-key manipulator to the villagers for their faith (she's obviously very kind regardless, but she has a job to do). Her dynamic with Reimu is also pretty excellent. Their personalities clash well, and yet they still have good relations since they learn a thing or two from each other.

Sanae's role as one of more prominent characters is perfectly fitting for someone like her. Now what would be cool is if she had more chapters centering on her. That's good enough for me.
