Most firearms that end in Gensokyo are probably old enough that they would be sufficient to bayonet or club a youkai to death with, but the problem is that the part that hits the youkai needs to have some sort of spiritual connection, so fresh bullets won't do more than sting them. You need old-ass bullets, maybe from WWII or WWI which was what forced the border to really close up in the first place.

Pretty sure weapons of 1890's or any gun of the first and second world war can kill a Youkai. I highly doubt any gun before those dates can kill a Youkai. Maimed or Injure perhaps but not kill.

My reading of the fanon was that you need to inflict "spiritual damage" on a yokai to hurt one, and in the context of shinto the attacks need to be part of established religious rituals. Hence why Reimu's danmaku are just lots and lots of talismans.

I suppose you could rig up a gun to fire spiritual danmaku, like Marisa's mini-hakkero. But why go through the trouble to fit a firearm with another weapon when you can just fire the hakkero without any additional hardware?

Because old guns already have a strong history from the conflicts they've been through and are already verging on the point of becoming tsukumogami: if a highschool student is capable of converting a dinky plastic box into a something that kind of hurts youkai, than a weapon which signified their decline during the turn into the 20th century would hold even stronger feelings.

That, and they tend to come with bayonets, so even if the danmaku fired from them isn't sufficient to banish a youkai directly, the physical metal of the weapon will, much like a family sword. In fact, a rifle passed from generation to generation would probably have similar qualities, though obviously the older a gun gets past the late 19th century the more primitive and less useful for danmaku it is: a tanegashima from the 16th century would be more powerful than an M1 Garand of WWII vintage, but it might suffer from a slow rate of fire and other limitations inherent to the model, forcing one to ask: do you want a weapon with lots of raw spiritual power imbued in it from age and history, or a younger but more modern device that is easier to use?

Too bad Reisen is stuck using that silly looking toy, as she'd be a great way to explain the nuances between firearms and their relation to Gensokyo. Those that aren't old enough to damage youkai can be incorperated into danmaku with tracers in order to enhance the enviornment, though I suppose it would still be dangeorus for human and fairy onlookers making it required to ban anyway.

Yuyuko isn't a youkai, and Yukari has some kind of red tape that keeps her from simply gapping armies into the void which is why she needed to band the youkai together to invade the moon and lost against Watatsuki. Utusho is stupid enough that Cirno managed to beat her in SoKU, so I have no doubts any half-competent fighter pilot would shoot her down after the first couple cities because she would totally let that happen. This is Flandre's job!

And why doesn't Flandre just destroy the belief limitation so youkai don't rely on it to exist? It's stated she can break concepts and ideas, and it would be a worthy endeavor over sitting in a basement all day.
