That spell made me rage. It seems like the most awful violation possible to have one's heart twisted that way by an outside force. It's not even really mind control. It just forbids you from being happy ever again unless you act out the edict of the spell, so that you eventually turn you will to doing so. I'd personally rather die.

It doesn't matter. Gwen's choice was taken from her. She might as well have been shot up with meth before being sold to Oswald.

The idea that we should only marry for some nebulous concept of "love" is a relatively modern one, and the results are pretty fucking mixed. From that perspective, are arranged marriages really that fucking terrible?

She ended up liking him though.

Marrying him for power or convenience would have been her own choice. Even being ordered to by her father and obeying would have been. But the spell commanded her to care for Oswald, and she would have despite all reason, even if he gave her to his troops as a toy. All he would have to say is " you being the sex slave of my troops would make me happy" in her presence, and even if she was instantly whisked away to some sanctuary, as her life progressed, she would feel increasingly empty not being able to give out handjobs to her husband's men. Eventually food would lose it's flavor, and her mind would wander increasingly to fantasies of doing things she still found repugnant just for the reward of seeing Oswald smile, or the chance that it might somehow help him. With the basis on which her mind and will grew into maturity destroyed in favor of the spell's selected stimulus, those parts of her identity would be at odds with her survival instinct, and so would gradually fade out. All this while knowing it was only a spell and remembering how she used to feel about everything in the world apart from Oswald before it was cast. I was horrified to see this happen in the game. I really liked Gwen before the spell, and I agree that Oswald would have been a good catch for her, but she began to die in this way after the spell was cast.

Wasn't the entire damn point that Odin was a selfish bastard?

Odin didn't care about Gwendolyn at all until later in the story when she proved herself to him.

So blame Odin.

Odin wasn't really selfish. He just put his dutys as King over his loved ones. In the end he DIES because he changed his mind. Pretty tragic.
